"Just remember, what you're seeing and what you're reading is not what's happening." - Donald Trump, 2018

All true! But in the end, they still affect my life, so I do have to care what's said, even if it is a bot or a filthy Russian.

Shit. I was thinking MacOS. Never mind.

Got two vintage bolt-action shotguns. Both suck, but they weren't that great to begin with. Been wanting a lever action! Seems that would be about as fast as a pump? Never touched one. LOL, never seen one IRL.

I didn't say a bolt-action was potentially worse? I did say that a pump is mostly better than a semi. I did say a single-shot is potentially worse than all of the above.

I know that doesn't make sense, very counter intuitive. But I have never, not once, had a single-shot fail unless the load itself failed, and I have some truly shitty single-shots. I should add the caveat that the single-shot needs to eject the spent shell, or you're really going to be slow.

Hard to explain unless one has the experience. With a single-shot you get into a rhythm; aim, fire, break, reload, fire, aim, fire, break, reload, fire. It's easy to spaz out with a semi and loose all your ammo. When your shots are limited, you take the extra split second to aim, make it count.

Or, consider this, if we're talking about mass causalities; what about reloading? There are techniques like "violin reloading", or "combat loading" singles, that go fast, but take serious and continuous practice. If we were both challenged to send 10 shots downrange, on target, bet I could do better with a single shot. First 5? Ya got me, assuming you didn't spaz out and spray lead all around. 10? I never stopped or hesitated, and I had the extra second to consider the situation and aim.

Anyway, if you ever make it to Florida, hunt me down and we'll go to my little camp in the swamp. Have a friendly shoot!

This is lemmy. You have to spell out every detail, in finer detail, or you will be misunderstood.

My take? Harris would have done nothing different in materiel support to Israel. She would have made slight condemning noises, but America would still be shipping money and munitions.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

OP was asking about Israeli support in particular.

Their gun laws are strict, compared to America. But the notion that Europeans and other first-world citizens can't have guns is far from the truth. Hell, some laws are looser. Most (all?) Europeans can buy a suppressor, and I gather those are mandated in some places, or at least you're frowned upon for not having one.

One of my favorite GunTubers was visiting and interviewing in a central European gun shop (forget the country, sorry) and I was like, "Well, shit. They can buy about anything we can buy!"

America doesn't have a gun problem. America has a culture problem. I could tell you a dozen stories of idiot Americans not understanding the laws we already have. Many of those idiots are dead or in prison.

A pump shotgun is far more reliable than a semi-auto. Want to kill a bunch of people? I'd never trust a semi. Bring the pump.

Hell, for that matter I might pick one of my single shots. Takes less practice than a pump, cannot fail to send lead down range. I know that's all counterintuitive. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast, as they say. :)

Isreal's genocide has dramatically changed opinions. I was always for Isreal; we American's love an underdog! Yeah, no longer. Now I say that Israel has forfeited their right to exist.

Now imagine all the people who hate Jews as an extension of Israeli policy. Fuck me, people hated the man who played Joffrey on Game of Thrones and Rose from Star Wars! It's less of a jump for such people to say, Israel evil -> Jews evil.

I'd count laptops along with desktops. There's no meaningful difference for most folks. The desktop is dying hard and fast, has been for a decade.

Dad lived a life of violence when he was young. He advised me to attack the weapon, not the man. This guy focused on the weapon, not beating ass. Good on him.

Feeling it's a dumb question because my brain isn't parsing exactly how this is supposed to work.

Anyone in the UK want to give it a spin?

Not a stupid question, but if I post on c/asklemmy my post disappears.

Turn it on, motor runs for a minute until there's water under pressure. Works fine until I let off the trigger, then the motor won't start again for 3 days. Seriously, tried this a few times, takes 3 days until it will start again. Runs fine until I let off the trigger.

It's like a sensor is saying, "We got water and pressure, cut the motor off." To reset I think I have to take the hose off, not simply turn the water off. And wait 3 days. :(

All the troubleshooting I'm seeing revolves around power issues. Pulled to top off and yes, it's getting voltage all the way to the motor wires. Doesn't matter if I leave it plugged in or not. For sure not a power switch issue, tested with a multimeter.

If it helps, here is the model

EDIT: Found a YouTube short with comments saying replacing or cleaning the tip fixed it? Can't try it tonight as I have to finish cleaning my carpet tomorrow and if it cuts off again it'll be Tuesday until I can try again.

Why not us-east-2 if you need east coast? Even so, I'm almost as far as I can be (in America) from us-west-1 and us-west-2. The difference in speed is barely perceptible when running services out west. In fact, I think my Lightsail PiHole is out there.

As I said, I'm not aware of any historical issues at the other DCs. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Most posts to those 3 comms fail, but sometimes that's lemmy errors. Anyway.

Rough Rider .22 revolver. Shells on the right are spent, left are unfired. Cylinder won't rotate after the 3rd shot because the shells deform and poke up. Hell is that? It's like they fire, bounce back and crumple, which doesn't seem physically possible.

Sure seems like that's happening when shooting it. Tested 5 cylinders, .22 and .22WMR, all the same results. Scarily, I can feel some back blast from the more powerful .22WMR, which again shouldn't be possible.

Took it apart for some deep cleaning the other night, didn't see anything weird, put it back together. Still fails. And this is the 3rd such gun I've owned, not my first rodeo.

Thought everyone understood that wild animals can be dangerous, but mostly hide or run away.

Only laid eyes on a panther once. It had checked me out ahead of time, utterly ignored me. Only seen one gator that wasn't hauling ass away from my canoe or kayak. Saw a mama black bear with tiny babies galumphing along behind as she ran off. Went back the next day, couldn't see her, but I heard the warning! Water moccasins hiss and pitch a fit, run away. You'd have to be deaf and step on one. (I've come close!)

Then you got people like my wife. She went to meet me at the trail entrance the other night, saw a small animal cross the path, got spooked and ran back to her car. Daughter and I saw a roll of teenage armadillos, up close! My wife asked if they would attack us.

Wife's friend came over from England. She was choking down panic and the sun set on our camp in the swamp. I assured her that speaking in a normal tone of voice would scare anything away. Never been in wild woods and never at night!

I've had people online act like I'm an idiot for getting into the uncivilized places I often go. Many people here in NW Florida won't go on the water unless it's a large body and in a large boat. They think I'm going to get attacked in my kayak.

So, what's your perception of the animals where you live? Do you think the people in your area feel the same?

I feel like I'm missing something obvious.

I suspect I caught a ban and this caused the glitch? When I make an edit and hit save, the post blinks and goes back to the original. If I click save on a post, there's a hesitation, then nothing.

This happened before, then went away and now it's back. It is 100% my account because a new account works fine and this account fails in the same manner in both Firefox and Edge.

Anyone?

May not sound like a dumb question, but this isn't my first rodeo, but it's the first time I've lost.

In my 20s, myself, gf and bf moved into a house crawling with roaches. She and I spent the first night smashing as fast as we could go. The wall behind the fridge was "black" with roach shit. Easy money. We cleaned like hell and laid boric acid powder everywhere. A new generation of tiny ones came along, died quickly, that was that.

Had roaches in this house for years now. I've tried the above trick, no love. Got some poison a friend recommended, works OK, but they'll be back. Had an exterminator in. He gave me some great tricks and his treatment worked great, but I can't afford $40 a month until this is finally resolved.

And the kitchen isn't filthy! My wife cleans and wipes it down every day. Not a deep clean of course, but again, it's not filthy. There are a few around my desk because I often eat here, I get that bit.

They seem to be in the appliances and wall sockets. Pulled a smart socket today, filthy with roach shit, front and back. They're coming out of the walls! I could probably figure a trick to bag and nuke the appliances, but the walls?!

HUGE bonus would be some advice on trapping them to feed our chameleon! When my wife sees one she'll trap it in a little tupperware container and toss them in the lion's den. I've tried some methods I found online, not a single catch. Which is embarrassing because I'm pretty handy, understand basic biology, should be a no-brainer.

If I don't figure this soon, I'm importing some Huntsmen spiders from you Aussie cunts. No wonder my wife thinks lizards are good luck in the house. (Philippines, Florida, same difference.)

MODS: WE ALREADY GOT MEDICAL HELP. The doctor knew we were husband and wife and neither she nor her nurse were worried. In fact, the nurse told my wife she would be fine. I'd just like opinions and experiences and I will treat them as such.

I'll start by saying the doctor took us separately, so I didn't know she was positive until we left and there are no humans in the waiting room. We were too shocked to go back for instructions.

Lungs been locked up for 2-weeks. I can breathe fine, but I can tell I'm fucked because the lightest activity sends my heart hammering. My usual fix (generic Advil Cold & Sinus) was working fine, until it didn't.

This is a thing when I'm not constantly exercising, exercising a lot. Been sitting on my ass for some time. This is because I have "emphysema light" due to smoking, quit 15-years back, too late.

Went to the new urgent care place with our shiny new Obamacare cards. Holy shit! I don't think we pay anything but a $12 copay! She got COVID and cough suppressant pills, I got doxycycline.

I know the doxycycline will work, I'll feel great 24-hours from now. But COVID scared the shit out of me. I know it's not the OG strain, I know the newer versions aren't so bad, but with my lungs? Terrified I'll be on a vent if this gets me.

Obviously we've been in close contact since she caught it and went infectious. Stuck in the car for 2-hours, sleeping together, all that. Betting she got it at work Thursday or Friday when she works in the office, also the only time she's around people. Fuck call centers.

AGAIN, I'm not soliciting advice as looking for opinions and experiences. With such close contact, seems weird she got it and I didn't. Anyone else?

For the record, we're the same age and both got the first 3 shots, but that's it.

Even the earliest spell checkers were better! I write a lot on here to keep my sanity and several times a day I'm sure my spelling is correct but it gets flagged. About 6 of 7 times, I was right to begin with. Sigh. "Add to Dictionary"

Hadn't been on Firefox for well over a decade and the Chrome engine turning to crap brought me home. Is there something I should add to fix this? Chrome was nearly flawless, as is every word processor out there. Just can't get my head around how awful Firefox is at spell check, feel I must must be doing something wrong.

Have a couple of small, shallow ponds at my camp in the boonies. Two dried up the last two years, killing off most of the dragonfly population. (Takes 'em two years underwater to mature.) We no longer have Combat Air Patrol, fine at our house though. So bad out there that bug spray doesn't work even if you bathe in it. Never had issues before. Because I had dragonflies. I'm sure the 10" of snow, in Florida upset things just a tad. Fucking global warming.

Anyway, searched a bit and everyone wants to sell me a bug zapper. A) I don't have power unless I run a genny. B) Those things are indiscriminate and we humans have nuked the insect population as is.

There has to be some way to attract them into a trap. I know they target mammalian CO2 exhalations, and to a lesser extent, warmth. Seems like there should be an easy way to suck the mindless beasts into a black hole. ?
