It's truly shocking that Britain is one of the only nations in the West where corporations are allowed to wire money to political parties, even if the shareholders aren't british.

The measure was introduced by French conservative lawmaker Celine Imart, who argued it would prevent confusion with traditional meat products.

Likewise the community has no rules listed, so I'm not sure how I've broken rule 4

Davel is probably going to try to claim me downvoting a post or comment of his that popped up on my feed or something as me breaking the entire instances rule 4 (no spam?) - which is why I need to be banned only from one community I don't engage in.

Lemmy.ml admin Davel has been rage downvoting my posts a lot lately, even going so far as to downvote me telling real legitimate antisemites to 'fuck off'.

Even CowBee had the decency to admit they were in the wrong and change their ragevote to an upvote.

Davel however seems to especially thinskinned even for the typical .ML'er and would rather double down and engage in poorly disguised retaliation bans for criticisms of a political ideology.

This thought terminating behaviour on display by one of the admins of such a reputable and outstanding instance as Lemmy.ml was not at all warranted and I hereby call on the leadership at lemmy.ML to unban me so that I may continue to not post in their community.

New York City Mayoral elect Zohran Mamdani previously called for the boycott of Cornell Tech over its public-private partnership with Technion — Israel Institute of Technology not long after he won a seat in the New York State Assembly in 2020.

“If you were to look at the lens of [the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement] and how it applies here in New York City, you would say that Cornell-Technion is something you would be talking about,” Mamdani reportedly said on the podcast, according the The New York Post.

As Mayor-elect, Mamdani was asked by the Roosevelt Islander at a press conference whether he “currently support[s] a boycott of Cornell Tech [or if] has he ever supported a boycott [of Cornell Tech].” While Mamdani did not explicitly say he would no longer boycott Cornell Tech, he did not think the partnership was out of compliance with international law.

“Wherever the [Eric] Adams administration and previous administrations have taken us out of compliance with international law, we’ll return the city back into that compliance,” Mamdani said. Upon further questioning from the reporter, Mamdani elaborated that he does not “think that [Cornell Tech] applies to what the Adam’s administration’s done,” appearing to say that he does not support a boycott of Cornell Tech

When asked if Cornell has communicated with Mamdani or if they plan to engage with the Mamdani administration, a University spokesperson did not respond to the question. Instead, the spokesperson wrote that “the enormous success of this academic collaboration [between Cornell University and Technion – Israel Institute of Technology] proves that universities can be powerful economic engines as well and preserve New York City’s status as a global technology leader.”

The spokesperson also did not directly respond to questions about whether Cornell Tech is directly involved with the IDF, given its partnership with Technion — Israel Institute of Technology, which is tied to the organization via the Advanced Defense Research Institute and the Center for Security Science & Technology.

“The people of Hong Kong understandably want answers and accountability, so that the hundreds of victims are properly compensated and to avoid such a tragedy occurring again," UN human rights chief Volker Türk said.

The UN rights chief stressed that several provisions and practices under the 2020 National Security Law and the 2024 Safeguarding National Security Ordinance do not comply with international human rights law, particularly the principles of legality, necessity and proportionality governing permissible restrictions on rights.

Solar panels used widely across Ireland, including in large solar farms, at airports, and on government buildings, were sourced from companies linked to forced labour and environmental devastation in the Xinjiang region of China, RTÉ Investigates has found.

Two Chinese solar panel manufacturers, JA Solar and Jinko Solar, were sourcing a raw material called polysilicon – one of the essential ingredients in the manufacture of panels – from Xinjiang, where China has built a regime of forced labour and repression targeting the region's ethnic minorities, particularly Uyghurs, a system some critics, including the US government, describe as a genocide.

In a landmark 2022 report, the United Nations concluded that human rights abuses in [Xinjiang] were widespread and could constitute crimes against humanity.

JA Solar and Jinko Solar panels can be found on sites across Ireland, including at a new solar farm at Shannon Airport, opened by Minister for Climate Energy Darragh O’Brien on 28 November, in Wicklow County Council’s car park, and in Ireland’s largest solar farm developments, including at sites owned by ESB.

The investigation also found that** enormous volumes of coal**, the dirtiest fossil fuel, were being mined and burned in order to process and purify the polysilicon.

This lead to extremely high levels of air pollution in an industrial zone called Zhundong Development Park, one of the most important areas for polysilicon production in China, where polysilicon companies are co-located with vast open-pit coal mines. Three of the world’s top ten polysilicon manufacturers are based in the park.

China's subsidisation of its solar industry has driven down prices and made solar power the most affordable energy source in the world, but critics say this has been done at a human and environmental cost that is too great to ignore.

China's production of panels ... has vastly overshot demand. It produces twice as many as is needed by the global economy, and the environmental cost has primarily been borne by Xinjiang.

"There are crimes against humanity being perpetrated in the Uyghur region, so we don't see this as a trade issue or even a national security issue," said Patricia Carrier, a human rights lawyer with the Coalition to End Forced Labour in the Uyghur Region.

"The Chinese government has purposefully invested heavily in several sectors to ensure that they are concentrated in or reliant on Uyghur forced labour and also very lax environmental standards...so not only is there forced labour being used, but it is also very environmentally damaging."

Industry bodies say that China's dominance comes at the cost of social and human rights, and has "jeopardised" and "undermined" Europe's commitment to a "fair and resilient energy transition."

"The nexus between forced labour and the unsustainably low prices of Chinese-made solar PV modules and inverters poses a serious threat," said the European Solar Manufacturing Council in a letter addressed to the then taoiseach Leo Varadkar and energy minister Eamon Ryan in January 2024.

"Without EU regulations scrutinizing goods throughout the value chain for forced labour, European PV manufacturers, adhering to higher social and environmental standards, are jeopardised."

Though allegations of forced labour and environmental issues in China’s solar industry have been known since at least 2020, Ireland continued to import and deploy panels from JA Solar and Jinko Solar.
