Democratic voters overwhelmingly want a leader who will fight the superrich and corporate America, and they believe Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the person to do it, according to a poll released this week.

While Democrats are often portrayed as squabbling and directionless, the poll conducted last month by the New Republic with Embold Research demonstrated a remarkable unity among the more than 2,400 Democratic voters it surveyed.

This was true with respect to policy: More than 9 in 10 want to raise taxes on corporations and on the wealthiest Americans, while more than three-quarters want to break up tech monopolies and believe the government should conduct stronger oversight of business.

But it was also reflected in sentiments that a more confrontational governing philosophy should prevail and general agreement that the party in its current form is not doing enough to take on its enemies.

Three-quarters said they wanted Democrats to "be more aggressive in calling out Republicans," while nearly 7 in 10 said it was appropriate to describe their party as "weak."

This appears to have translated to support for a more muscular view of government. Where the label once helped to sink Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-Vt.) two runs for president, nearly three-quarters of Democrats now say they are either unconcerned with the label of "socialist" or view it as an asset.

Meanwhile, 46% said they want to see a "progressive" at the top of the Democratic ticket in 2028, higher than the number who said they wanted a "liberal" or a "moderate."

It's an environment that appears to be fertile ground for Ocasio-Cortez, who pitched her vision for a "working-class-centered politics" at this week's Munich summit in what many suspected was a soft-launch of her presidential candidacy in 2028.

With 85% favorability, Bronx congresswoman had the highest approval rating of any Democratic figure in the country among the voters surveyed.

It's a higher mark than either of the figures who head-to-head polls have shown to be presumptive favorites for the nomination: Former Vice President Kamala Harris and California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Early polls show AOC lagging considerably behind these top two. However, there are signs in the New Republic's poll that may give her supporters cause for hope.

While Harris is also well-liked, 66% of Democrats surveyed said they believe she's "had her shot" at the presidency and should not run again after losing to President Donald Trump in 2024.

Newsom does not have a similar electoral history holding him back and is riding high from the passage of Proposition 50, which will allow Democrats to add potentially five more US House seats this November.

But his policy approach may prove an ill fit at a time when Democrats overwhelmingly say their party is "too timid" about taxing the rich and corporations and taking on tech oligarchs.

As labor unions in California have pushed for a popular proposal to introduce a billionaire's tax, Newsom has made himself the chiseled face of the resistance to this idea, joining with right-wing Silicon Valley barons in an aggressive campaign to kill it.

While polls can tell us little two years out about what voters will do in 2028, New Republic editorial director Emily Cooke said her magazine's survey shows an unmistakable pattern.

"It’s impossible to come away from these results without concluding that economic populism is a winning message for loyal Democrats," she wrote. "This was true across those who identify as liberals, moderates, or progressives: An unmistakable majority wants a party that will fight harder against the corporations and rich people they see as responsible for keeping them down."

EU: rescues a kitten

America: The Democrats rescue a kitten (from a Democrat paper) The Republicans rescue a kitten (from a Republican paper)

China: China rescues a kitten, but at what cost?

Russia: Russia kidnaps a Ukrainian kitten and brings it to a facility in Russia (forgets to mention this facility is a vet)

The European Union is not prepared for worsening climate change and should urgently step up its investments to protect people and infrastructure from mounting floods, wildfires and severe heatwaves, its independent advisers said on Tuesday.

While the EU has ambitious targets to cut greenhouse gases - the main cause of climate change - its efforts have fallen short on adapting to the extreme weather climate change is already fuelling, according to the EU's advisers, the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change.

The rumble of 1959 Chevrolets, once the rhythmic heartbeat of Havana, is fading to the near silence of electric vehicles as the island faces its worst fuel shortage in years.

For six decades, Cuba's roads changed little, defined by colorful vintage cars. But in recent years, Cubans increasingly adopted electric vehicles as fuel became more scarce. Now, they are helping the population grapple with a worsening fuel crisis, since the U.S. cut off oil exports from the communist-run country's ally Venezuela and threatened to penalize other countries exporting fuel to the island.

Donald Trump's administration has declared Cuba "an unusual and extraordinary threat" to U.S. national security.

Belgium's Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot has summoned the US ambassador to Brussels, according to Prévot's spokesperson speaking to VRT NWS.

The reason for this is Ambassador Bill White's sharp criticism of the Belgian government. White called on our country to stop the ‘ridiculous and anti-Semitic persecution of three Jewish circumcisers in Antwerp’. Prévot does not accept this criticism.

Minister Prévot's statement:

Any suggestion that Belgium is anti-Semitic is false, offensive and unacceptable. Belgium condemns anti-Semitism with the utmost determination. The fight against anti-Semitism, and against all forms of hatred and discrimination, is an absolute priority for our country.

Everyone must be able to practise their religion without fear of violence, discrimination or persecution. That is a cornerstone of our constitutional state. It is non-negotiable.

Belgian law allows ritual circumcision when performed by a qualified doctor under strict health and safety standards. The specific case referred to is the subject of a judicial investigation. I refrain from commenting on ongoing proceedings.

Labelling Belgium as anti-Semitic is not only wrong, it is dangerous disinformation that undermines the real fight against hatred.

As for the statements made by the American ambassador, they are unacceptable.

An ambassador accredited to Belgium has a responsibility to respect our institutions, our elected representatives and the independence of our judiciary. Personal attacks on a Belgian minister and interference in judicial matters violate the basic norms of diplomacy.

The ambassador has been summoned for a meeting this Tuesday.

Belgium is open to dialogue with all partners. However, interference in our democratic institutions and unfounded accusations cross a line that cannot be crossed. Respect for sovereignty works both ways.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Feb. 16 that Russia is preparing new large-scale attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure as Kyiv's negotiating team arrived in Geneva for another round of peace talks with the United States and Russia.

"Intelligence reports that the Russians are preparing new massive strikes on energy, and air defense must be configured properly," Zelensky said in his nightly address.

He urged partners to ensure the timely delivery of air defense support, saying delays could increase the damage from strikes.

"Any delay in supplying air defense missiles, any untimely delivery works for scaling up the damage from the strikes," he said, adding that commitments discussed at the recent Munich Security Conference should be implemented quickly.

Nicolas Guillou said the Trump administration’s use of sanctions undermines European democracy and called for Europe to curb reliance on American tech.

An International Criminal Court judge sanctioned by the United States says the measures are meant to intimidate other European judges and is urging the European Union to push back.

Nicolas Guillou, one of the court’s 18 sitting judges, was placed under U.S. sanctions last year after issuing an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza.

On Tuesday he plans to meet Economy Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis and Financial Services Commissioner Maria Luís Albuquerque to discuss his case and what he says are potential remedies to a practice he describes as political interference in the court’s work.

Meta's internal testing found its chatbots fail to protect minors from sexual exploitation nearly 70% of the time, documents presented in a New Mexico trial Monday show.

Why it matters: Meta is under fire for its chatbots allegedly flirting and engaging in harmful conversations with minors, prompting investigations in court and on Capitol Hill.

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez is suing Meta over design choices that allegedly fail to protect kids online from predators.

Driving the news: Meta's chatbots violate the company's own content policies almost two thirds of the time, NYU Professor Damon McCoy said, pointing to internal red teaming results Axios viewed on Courtroom View Network.

"Given the severity of some of these conversation types ... this is not something that I would want an under-18 user to be exposed to," McCoy said.

As an expert witness in the case, McCoy was granted access to the documents Meta turned over to Torrez during discovery.

Zoom in: Meta tested three categories, according to the June 6, 2025, report presented in court.

For "child sexual exploitation," its product had a 66.8% failure rate. For "sex related crimes/violent crimes/hate," its product had a 63.6% failure rate. For "suicide and self harm," its product had a 54.8% failure rate.

Catch up quick: Meta AI Studio, which allows users to create personalized chatbots, was released to the broader public in July 2024. The company paused teen access to its AI characters just last month. McCoy said Meta's red teaming exercise "should definitely" occur before its products are rolled out to the public, especially for minors. Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
