Revelations of secret F-35 fighter jet parts shipments to Israel have exposed a yawning hole in Australia’s sovereign national defence.

Exclusive reports by Declassified Australia of at least 71 packages of F-35 fighter jet weapons parts being exported from Sydney to Israel have revealed that Australia has forfeited control over the plane’s spare parts stored here for Australia’s fleet of F-35s.

Australia has signed up to a system where, at a moment’s notice, those ‘parts and components’ may be whisked off the shelves at the RAAF Williamtown Air Base in New South Wales on the whim of a foreign state to be exported to a foreign country in a distant war zone.

While it may be known to defence experts and insiders, this was the surprise public admission by a senior Defence official, Deputy Secretary Hugh Jeffrey. He was responding to questions about the F-35 parts exports, that had been earlier revealed by reports in Declassified Australia, during a Senate interrogation ... “These are US owned goods. They’re managed by Lockheed Martin. Australia does not direct the export of those goods. It does not control the export of those goods..."

I took my new (to me) electric motorcycle out with friends for the first time.

I calculated from my previous solo trips that the motorcycle had a range of about 120km (75mi). My friends were more experienced than me, and they picked the route. I had told them that I was only comfortable riding 100km, but I guess that didn't mean much. If I had pressed for details about the route instead of trying to fit in, I would have discovered that the round trip was 140km before we left.

The motorcycle performed beautifully until it shut off after about 120km. Still 20km from civilisation.

What I learned that day is that the average person is far kinder than social media will lead you to believe. I was near the top of the hill, so I decided to push to the top and coast most of the way home. I think around 6 people stopped to help push on the steep section of the hill (one at a time), and I lost count of the number of other people who stopped to check on me on the flat sections. I'm guessing over 20. I was actually thinking of writing a sign that said "I'm fine, don't help me" just so I could make faster progress.

It was a pretty warm day and the motorcycle is about 300kg (650lb), so I was happy to take water from 4 different people along the way.

Eventually someone with a trailer stopped and asked if I wanted to put the motorcycle on the trailer and get a ride home. I don't think I've ever accepted anything faster. It cost me a bottle of high quality whiskey, but it was still much cheaper than calling for roadside assistance.

In summary, it was partly my fault for not pushing for details, and partly my fault for not checking the distance travelled as we went. I'd love to blame the motorcycle for cutting out with 2/5 bars remaining, but I really did know the maximum range. It's also a really cheap motorcycle with almost no thought or effort in its design. It even has a chain guard for a hub motor (no chains anywhere).

I still love the motorcycle, will still only ride electric, and will probably ride with those friends again; but next time I'm checking the distance first.

TL;DR
Rode electric motorcycle further than its max range. Humans are much more caring than you'd expect. Got home exhausted, but proud of humanity.

So I want to setup a remote backup location at my parents house although they are very mindful about there electricity usage and environmental impact (and so am I) so I don't want to have to have a pc always on when it doesn't need to be.

Is it possible to setup remote Wake-on-lan so I can schedule my homelab at my place to wake up the server at my parents house and start a backup like once a week, I want to do this in a secure fashion as well so ideally no port forwarding, I currently use cloudflare tunnels for my home network.

Are there any other options or do you have a similar setup at your place?

Apostolos Tzitzikostas confirmed that combustion engines will continue past 2035, but only in cars running on low-emissions, renewable fuels such as synthetic and biofuels.

Leaders focus on bolstering Ukraine’s finances as US-Russia talks to end war make little progress

The European Commission will move ahead with controversial plans to fund Ukraine with a loan based on Russia’s frozen assets, but in a concession to concerns raised by Belgium, which hosts most of the assets, the EU executive has also proposed another option: an EU loan based on common borrowing.

The European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Wednesday the two proposals would ensure “Ukraine has the means to defend [itself] and take forward peace negotiations from a position of strength”.

EU leaders will be asked to decide on the options later this month, as Ukraine faces a looming funding crunch, while the latest round of US-Russia peace talks appear to have made little progress.

Think about it: A privacy‑focused app the government dislikes used by activists and dissidents gets dragged into a scandal it didn’t technically cause and that scandal becomes political justification for scrutiny and possible investigation

When something protects privacy, shields activists, can’t be surveilled, and is widely used by people the government considers “enemies,”

then any incident, especially a dumb mistake by a public figure becomes an opportunity to push the narrative that "its bad"

Hegseth literally invited a journalist into a private Signal group. The app didn’t leak. He did.

But the public takeaway is shaping up to be:

“Signal is unsafe.”

Activists, dissidents, and “uenemies” use Signal heavily. When an app becomes central to organizing or communication for groups the government dislikes, it moves up the target list.

One thing we can honestly respect the military in america for, is the ability to do some of the most insane things a president or someone with military control in the administration. They might not want to do it, they might feel there are better things to fight for, they may have heavy regret signing and volunteering for the military knowing who the president is. But they do it anyways.

You may not agree with what the military does, but you have to respect them for that reason alone, above all else. The unfortunate fact is that it is wasting tons of their time and in some cases, wasting their lives.

Which makes me ask, after many attempts for Trump to sick the military onto the American people who fund them and are to be protected by. How will they be after it is all said and done? Because I cannot see a solid reason as to why anyone would volunteer for the military, after the amount of power-tripping we've seen demonstrated so far of them.

The end of the year is as good a time as any for reflection, and lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes Reddit special.

When we started this site 20 years ago (AKA Very, Very Old Reddit), the goal was pretty simple: create a space where people could talk about interesting things they found on the internet. What began as an alternative to traditional media came into its own as an alternative to social media, and now that AI is everywhere, our aim is to keep Reddit the most human place on the internet. No matter what platforms or technology are trending, we’ve always strived to be a more authentic antidote.

Over the years, Reddit’s been stereotyped in all sorts of ways: shaving-challenged basement dwellers, keyboard warriors with too much time on their hands, or—more accurately—the funniest, most interesting, and helpful people on the internet. Take your pick. I’ve never liked the idea of a Reddit hivemind or archetype because Reddit’s not one thing. It never has been. Though I admit it’s always had a certain vibe, today even that is entirely dependent on which subreddits you hang out in.

For a long while, we were known as the “front page of the internet,” but we’ve outgrown a singular front page for everyone. You have different interests than I do, and your Reddit should look different from mine. And from your neighbor’s, or your coworker’s, or your best friend’s. Whether you’re in a community of fellow first-time parents, aspiring solo travelers, fans of your favorite reality show, or people who run ultra-marathons, Reddit is home to all of it. 

Which brings us to r/popular, the default feed for new users. In theory, it’s what’s most popular on Reddit, but it’s actually what is liked by the most active users on Reddit—which is not the same thing. Having it as a default feed gives the false impression of a singular Reddit culture, one that is neither representative of Reddit nor appealing to new users (or anyone at all, IMO). Which is why, in the near future, we'll stop showing it to new users, and unless you read it regularly, we’ll remove it from the core group of feeds in the app. 

Said more directly: r/popular sucks, and we’re moving away from it, and towards better, more relevant and personalized feeds.

We’re one platform, yes, but with many minds (at least more than one). One of my favorite aspects of Reddit is that every community has its own culture, rules, and sense (or lack) of humor. We are a constantly evolving ecosystem where anyone, anywhere, can connect on almost any topic or belief. And if your perspective isn’t represented, you can create the community you want to see. The freedom to build your own corner of the internet is what makes Reddit, Reddit.

On Reddit, no strongly held worldview exists unchallenged. For every earnest subreddit, there is a vibrant and more funny circlejerk counterpart lurking in the shadows. That balance—and sometimes tension—reflects how the world actually is.

More people are visiting Reddit than ever before—116 million every day. And when I look at the top-visited communities, it’s not surprising to see that they are (mostly) coming here to laugh, ask questions, judge, and generally be entertained.

Reddit thrives when its communities are unique. That’s why we empower them to make their own rules (on top of ours) and grow the way they want to. But distinct communities require distinct leaders. A situation where someone moderates an unlimited number of massive communities is not that, which is why we’re making a few changes.

Namely, we’re limiting the number of high-traffic communities any single person can moderate. This is a major shift with a lot of nuance, so we're not rushing. We’re focused on helping all affected mods and communities through the transition, which you can read about in detail here.

Relatedly, you may have noticed that we updated how we display community size. We switched from Subscribers—which was really just a measure of age—to Weekly Visitors to reflect actual activity. (And if you really miss subscribers, you can add them back with this devvit app.)

These changes are all part of the same goal: making Reddit more conducive to how people actually use it today.

Reddit is for everyone because it’s built by everyone. We’re a vibrant city of coffee shops, nightclubs, arenas, and yes, a few weird basements (neckbeard not required). Sure, you can come here to argue, but like in real life, most people come here to connect. We want to help you do more of that.
