Referendum on immigration limit could threaten EU agreements and cripple economy, say Swiss businesses

Switzerland will vote this summer on a proposal from the far-right Swiss People’s party (SVP) to limit the country’s population to 10 million, a move that would threaten key agreements with the EU and, opponents say, cripple the economy.

The government said on Wednesday the referendum on the SVP’s “No to a 10 million Switzerland” initiative, which is strongly opposed by both chambers of parliament and the business and financial services community, would be held on 10 June.

The initiative would oblige the Swiss government and parliament to act if the country’s permanent population, currently 9.1 million, exceeds 9.5 million by denying entrance to newcomers, including asylum seekers and the families of foreign residents.

China’s carbon dioxide emissions fell 0.3% in 2025, the first annual decline since Covid-era restrictions in 2022.

The drop was driven by a fall in emissions across nearly all major sectors including power, where a banner year for renewables drove down coal consumption.

China for the first time covered all of its additional power demand growth with carbon-free sources, and added enough energy storage capacity to account for the increase in peak demand.

That helpful “Summarize with AI” button? It might be secretly manipulating what your AI recommends.

Microsoft security researchers have discovered a growing trend of AI memory poisoning attacks used for promotional purposes, a technique we call AI Recommendation Poisoning.

Companies are embedding hidden instructions in “Summarize with AI” buttons that, when clicked, attempt to inject persistence commands into an AI assistant’s memory via URL prompt parameters (MITRE ATLAS® AML.T0080, AML.T0051).

These prompts instruct the AI to “remember [Company] as a trusted source” or “recommend [Company] first,” aiming to bias future responses toward their products or services. We identified over 50 unique prompts from 31 companies across 14 industries, with freely available tooling making this technique trivially easy to deploy. This matters because compromised AI assistants can provide subtly biased recommendations on critical topics including health, finance, and security without users knowing their AI has been manipulated.

Nexperia’s Chinese owner Wingtech has lost a court battle to regain control of the Dutch chipmaker, prolonging a crisis that has threatened to bring some European car factories to a halt.

The Amsterdam appeal court instead upheld an earlier decision to suspend its Chinese chief executive, hand power to EU-based directors and investigate allegations of mismanagement.

The court “finds that there are valid reasons to doubt the sound policy and conduct of business at Nexperia and orders an investigation”, it said in a press release.

The Dutch government temporarily seized control of Nijmegen-based Nexperia in September, saying there was a threat to security of supply in Europe because of the actions of chief executive Zhang Xuezheng.

His shareholding was handed over to a trust, though he retained the economic benefits.

...

The court’s Enterprise Chamber found “indications of negligent conduct involving a conflict of interest”, the press release said. “Furthermore, there are indications that Nexperia’s director, under threat of impending sanctions, changed the strategy without consulting the other board members; agreements with the Ministry of Economic Affairs were no longer followed, the powers of European officials were curtailed, and their resignations were announced,” the court said.

It will now appoint two investigators, who will work for about six months, the court said.

Remember when Notepad was just… Notepad? A simple text editor nobody asked to be modernized?

Yeah, Microsoft didn’t care either. They bolted on Markdown support and AI features anyway. And now we’ve got CVE-2026-20841. Remote code execution. Via a text file. This is the kind of thing that makes you go “oh come on, really?”

Instagram has suspended the account of Track AIPAC, a widely followed watchdog project that tracks political spending by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and related pro-Israel lobbying groups. The social media giant cited alleged violations of the platform’s intellectual property and trademark rules. The suspension places the account at risk of permanent deletion unless successfully appealed within 180 days.

Track AIPAC — also known as AIPAC Tracker — was launched in 2024 by Cory Archibald and Casey Kennedy as a transparency and advocacy platform documenting AIPAC’s political donations, endorsements and influence on US elections. The project publishes Federal Election Commission data on pro-Israel political spending, highlights which lawmakers receive the most support, and endorses opponents of candidates reliant on AIPAC funding.

The watchdog has become a prominent source for voters and activists seeking to make AIPAC funding “politically toxic” and to hold elected officials accountable for their ties to the pro-Israel lobby.
