On both Left and Right, many like to take the Whitlam dismissal— as it became known — as a constitutional struggle between an old British-oriented establishment and a new, progressive Australia. But in retrospect, it’s hard to doubt that the 1975 dismissal was in fact a soft coup d’état, heavily influenced by US power and influence.

These various factors — ranging from economic interests to political maneuvering — help explain the strange paradox of countries scrambling to whitewash al-Sharaa and curry favor with a regime that was considered a terrorist entity just months ago. It is a fitting spectacle for the state of global politics in this Trumpian era.

The Tails project has announced the release of Tails 7.2, a new version of the privacy-focused Linux distribution that routes all internet connections through the Tor network.

The update’s highlight is the upgrade to Tor Browser 15.0.1, introducing a trio of interface improvements inherited from Firefox 140. These include vertical tabs, tab groups, and a redesigned address bar with enhanced search.

Hi,
A small chunk of you of you may know me for my app Jotty, however I also published a slightly less popular (entirely open source) app called Cr*nmaster.

repo: https://github.com/fccview/cronmaster

Cr*nmaster (cronmaster) is a pretty powerful tool that allows you to view/create/edit/manage all your host cronjobs comfortable from an intuitive UI, it has features such as pausing jobs, adding comment to them, running them right from the UI, and from the latest update you'll be able to have nicely structured logs for your jobs on top of exit statuses being shown right there and then. You will be able to see if a job failed at a glance and view the logs to see what's going on.

I have also added translations that can be customised locally on your own machine (or you can be an angel and create a pull request with your own language so we can officially support it, together!)

The whole thing is very easy and straightforward to setup both with and without docker, the repository has a lot of guides in the `howto` folder on top of a very verbose readme file.

Here's a few of the key features:

  • View/edit/delete/run your cron jobs from an intuitive UI
  • Log your cronjobs (it uses a proprietary wrapper, you can modify the wrapper as much as you like from the mounted ./data folder).
  • At glance exit statuses for all your jobs
  • System stats to see how healthy your host machine is
  • Ability to create custom scripts (using handy snippets - which you can easily add more of) for your cron jobs straight from the UI, these scripts are stored in your mounted folder and can be easily used when creating a cron job

All this to say that I am extremely excited for everything that's coming with this latest update, you can read about the latest release and all the improvements that came with it here

Let me know your thoughts and if you run in any issues i'm fairly active on github and on my discord server :)

NOTE for docker users:
Due to this needing to be able to read crontabs the docker has to run as root and have read/write access to your cron jobs. There was no way around it, so I suggest you keep this within your home network and not exposed to the web for security reasons.

'Israeli' President Isaac Herzog has received a letter from US President Donald Trump urging him to consider granting a pardon to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Herzog's office confirmed Wednesday.

Trump’s request comes as Netanyahu faces a long-running corruption trial, in which he denies all charges and has pleaded not guilty.

In the letter, Trump wrote, “While I absolutely respect the independence of the Israeli Justice System, and its requirements, I believe that this ‘case’ against Bibi, who has fought alongside me for a long time, including against the very tough adversary of Israel, Iran, is a political, unjustified prosecution.”

Sarah, a 44-year-old single mother in Maryland, was down to the last $20 on her EBT card as of Monday, wondering how she would feed herself and her two preteen boys as the government shutdown dragged on. She’d been out of work since May, after the Trump administration made sweeping cuts to federal contracts and eliminated her job in public health.

She had been rationing her Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits for over a month, unsure of when, if ever, the deposit would hit her account again. “It’s been awful,” said Sarah, who asked to be identified by her first name only because she fears speaking out could hurt her job search. But the Maryland mom said she was willing to sacrifice if it meant millions of Americans could afford their health insurance.

“The pitch they made, it made sense,” Sarah told The Intercept. “Everyone knew it was going to be painful, but it was important … and they just wasted it all.”

The Intercept spoke with four SNAP recipients who said they’re furious that Democrats squandered the sacrifice they made for the last month to ensure access to health care for millions of Americans — just as voters rewarded the party for finally fighting back against Republicans with major electoral victories last week.

“We sacrificed and we would continue to sacrifice because we understood what the stakes were. People’s health care was at stake,” said Delight Worthyn, 67, a SNAP recipient with lupus living in New Haven, Connecticut. “And that they would cave for nothing after we have all gone through this. … I only feel betrayed.”

Microsoft has launched a new rewards program offering Chrome users "real cash value" points to switch to Edge browser[^1]. When users search for "Chrome" on Bing, they receive a prompt offering 1,300 Microsoft Rewards points that can be exchanged for gift cards, including on Amazon[^1].

The Browser Choice Alliance, representing Chrome, Opera and Vivaldi, criticizes this as Microsoft's latest tactic to manipulate browser choice, following earlier practices like "forced resets, misleading prompts, and hidden settings"[^1].

The market context shows why Microsoft is pursuing this strategy - Edge holds less than 9% market share compared to Chrome's 78%[^1]. The rewards program appears targeted specifically at Chrome users, with Windows Latest noting "we're not seeing ads for other browsers, such as Opera, Firefox or Brave"[^1].

I've been unable to access the PlayStore all day. It tells me I'm not signed in even though my profile picture is visible in the top right corner. When I tap "Try again" nothing happens.

When I tap on my profile picture and then select "Google Account" it tells me I'm not connected to the internet (see screenshot). But I am, using my browser for example works just fine.

The only other app I've noticed having problems is Weather, which is unable to refresh and also tells me there's no internet connection.

Any idea what's going on here?

A disturbing email released as part of the House Oversight Committee’s 20,000-page document dump on Wednesday revealed a chummy relationship between Jeffrey Epstein and Tom Barrack, a private equity investor who currently serves as the U.S. ambassador to Turkey.

Republicans on the House committee made the Epstein-related files public after Democrats on the committee released a handful of damning emails between the late sex offender and journalist Michael Wolff earlier in the day.

In the emails, Epstein asserts that President Donald Trump not only knew about the parade of young and underage girls he sexually exploited but had once spent “hours” with one of them.

In March 2016, Epstein emailed Barrack: “send photos of you and child. — make me smile.”

However, not all of the charts seem to be getting updated.

I’m running my own harbor registry for maintaining my own images for www.keyboardvagabond.com and I was working on finishing up this longhorn excessive api call issue when I saw that harbor stopped working.

Essentially, the gist is that they moved certain image references to the bitnamilegacy repository instead of bitnami, but the harbor helm chart didn’t get the updates, so the images failed to pull because they “disappeared” and updating the the latest helm version didn’t solve it.

Essentially, for now what I had to do was go to the default values modal and search for “repository” and make sure that I had an entry under earch part for image.repository where the value was bitnamilegacy/.

This took me a while to figure out and I hope this helps someone!

I finally got some online storage to backup my home server to, and I can finally sleep easy when my house inevitably goes up in flames. My initial push has been with rclone using the sync command. I plan on running a daily or weekly push.

I've gone with Hetzner and they have a variety of options on how to connect to their storage box as they call it. They have an option for automatic snapshotting of, as I understand it, the entire storage box that you can then recreate.

So my thoughts are around rclones sync and copy commands, and the storage snapshots.
Copy) If I use copy, it won't clear up deleted files automatically that I actually want gone.
Sync) With sync I'm worried that say a drive failed (my set up is a bit wonky currently until I can build a proper RAID), it will do a sync, see an entire directory is gone, and go ahead and delete it.
Snapshots) Here I'm worried that any new data that's been added in-between the snap shot and a server failure would be lost. And I don't you can retrieve partial data from a snapshot.

What I have in mind is to use rclone's copy command, but then somehow have a retention period on files that no longer exist on my server. So a deleted file might exist in my storage bucket for a month before being removed from there as well.

How do you guys manage this? Are there any ready made solutions, or do I need to whip up a script that goes through and looks at the last modified dates and removes the old ones?

Moar adventures in #selfhosting for #keyboardvagabond! I think that I finally got the longhorn too-many-s3-calls networking issue resolved https://blog.keyboardvagabond.com/michael-dileos-software-and-tech-blog/longhorns-backup-cost-savings-or-not-getting-surprise-bills

I also found that the #bitnami #helmchart for #harborRegistry didn't get updated with the latest migration they did, so I had to find out that they moved their repositories to bitnamilegacy and update my helm chart. That took a while to figure out why the image pulls failed!
