Exclusive: ‘Deep-rooted injustices’ affect billions of people due to location of wells, pipelines and other infrastructure

A quarter of the world’s population lives within three miles (5km) of operational fossil fuel projects, potentially threatening the health of more than 2 billion people as well as critical ecosystems, according to first-of-its-kind research.

A damning new report by Amnesty International, shared exclusively with the Guardian, found that more than 18,300 oil, gas and coal sites are currently distributed across 170 countries worldwide, occupying a vast area of the Earth’s surface.

Proximity to drilling wells, processing plants, pipelines and other fossil fuel facilities elevates the risk of cancer, respiratory conditions, heart disease, premature birth and death, as well as posing grave threats to water supplies and air quality, and degrades land.

Zohran Mamdani says he’s keeping New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. It is his first major concession not just to the political establishment but more significantly to the national security system.

This week, I credited Mamdani with having run a campaign that literally met voters where they were at — in bodegas, subway stations and busy sidewalks, where he asked ordinary people to share their concerns. It was a rare moment where people rather than the politician were the main character. His decision to keep Tisch, however, is a whiplash-inducing swing back to the usual protagonists of American life.

The Harvard-educated Tisch, 44, is daughter of billionaire James Tisch, the Chairman of the Board of Loews Corporation. (Members of the Tisch family contributed over $1.2 million to the Cuomo-aligned Super PAC Fix the City.) Though she’s only been Police Commissioner for a year, Tisch has taken national security doctrine to heart.

At a press briefing last month, Tisch called a proposed $80 million federal cut to the NYPD’s counterterrorism budget a “betrayal” and demanded that the matter be placed above politics.

“Counterterrorism funding cannot be a political issue,” Tisch said. “If these cuts go through as planned, it will represent a devastating blow to our counter-terrorism and intelligence programs in New York City.”

Wilson primarily campaigned on expanding workers’ rights, addressing the homelessness crisis in Seattle, and creating more affordable housing through social housing, rent control, and using public land for affordable development.

Meanwhile, Kshama Sawant is running for congress in Washington’s 9th Congressional district (central/south Seattle and its southeast suburbs).

Hello guys,

We're somewhat struggling with moving traditional file shares to SharePoint Online. Unanimously people recommend moving to multiple sites vs a single one because the ease of management. While I do not doubt that I simply cannot see the logic. The only real limitation I can think of is the amount of items per site where moving to multiple sites would make a difference.

What is easier about managing permissions on for example 5 folders in the root of a single site vs managing the permissions on 5 separate sites?

What I do know is that it is way easier to have my user go to a single site to find their stuff vs 5 different sites (and their corresponding URL's) or am I missing something here?

The press release from Nextcloud:

European software company Nextcloud presents its investment program „Sovereignty 2030“ to make the high-performance, sovereign open-source platform more widely available for organizations. The European company plans to invest more than 250 million Euros in digital sovereignty until 2030. The digital collaboration platform provider will invest in research and development, product innovations and partner enablement, public education and community projects to drive digital sovereignty in Europe.

„Europe can’t wait. As political decision making takes time, it is the local private sector that has to push our economic independence in a bottom-up approach. This is why we decided to take the lead. While infrastructure is important, we believe that the investment in brain power, people and education will be the decisive factor when it comes to sovereignty and digital independence,“ said Frank Karlitschek, CEO and founder, Nextcloud.

The investment program „Sovereignty 2030“ comprises the following focus areas:

People and brain power: Over the next five years, Nextcloud aims to expand its global workforce 7-fold to expand its product and set a new standard in collaboration technology. The firm will introduce key security and compliance innovations, invest in further AI research programs, expand scalability and performance of the product as well as developing new features that will further improve the productivity of teams collaborating in digital workplace environments.

Sovereign ecosystem: Nextcloud seeks to expand its global partner ecosystem and strengthen existing partnerships in order to create an industry-wide movement that allows individuals, private companies, and the public sector an easy setup and effortless, secure access to sovereign IT solutions. In October, Nextcloud already announced to be a founding member of the EuroStack Foundation with the goal to move from talking about digital sovereignty to taking action.

Educate and inform: Nextcloud will further expand its collaboration with partners and civil society organizations to educate and inform the public about privacy, security and digital sovereignty. Moreover, it will augment its leading role in the open source community, advocating and educating about the benefits of transparency, open standards and open code.

Empower the community: Nextcloud aims to grow and support the wider open source community, providing resources from coaching, training, and documentation to travel support, bringing together contributors from around the world to create and innovate on concepts of digital sovereignty, decentralization, and federation.

With Nextcloud, users can edit and share documents, chat and hold video conferences, and manage emails, contacts and calendars via easy web and mobile apps. Thousands of government agencies, companies, universities, research institutions and schools across Europe and beyond use Nextcloud, adding to the millions of individual users globally.

„Since the beginning of the year, interest in Nextcloud has tripled. Potential customers are also stating very clearly that they see dependency on big tech as a risk,“ said Frank Karlitschek. „We demonstrate that sovereign alternatives to big tech are not only possible, but already available.“

Founded in 2016, the open source company has developed its software from an enterprise file sync and share solution to a comprehensive collaboration platform, including chat, videoconferencing, office, groupware (mail, calendar, contacts), process automation engine and an AI Assistant. The open-source software has a modular design and can be extended with hundreds of apps. Nextcloud software runs on premises in a private cloud or with a trusted provider.

„We have constantly expanded our team and increased our spending in research and development to tens of millions per year,” said Frank Karlitschek.

Nextcloud aims to achieve this growth without venture capital or other external funding. Historically the company has grown its bookings 50-70% percent year over year. The company is profitable and headquartered in Germany.

Hi /c/selfhosted,

just a quick update regarding PdfDing as this was one of the most requested features. I am pleased to announce that PdfDing now has support for adding signatures to PDFs. The signatures are stored on the server, so they can be accessed from any device. Fun fact: As some of you know PdfDing is receiving a grant from the NGI Zero Commons Fund. By chance the signature on the grant memorandum was the first real signature with PdfDing.

In addition to this, PdfDing now has a dedicated website and documentation. As a non frontend dev I still feel like I have no idea what I am doing with regards to the frontend, so it's a mind boggling that I have now created a web app and a website that I find aesthetically pleasing. Obviously, it has been a big help to take inspiration from the design of many other great self-hosted apps.

PdfDing is selfhosted PDF manager, viewer and editor offering a seamless user experience on multiple devices. It's designed be to be minimal, fast, and easy to set up using Docker. You can find the repository here. As always stars on github are very welcome.

The United Kingdom is no longer sharing intelligence with the US about suspected drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean because it does not want to be complicit in US military strikes and believes the attacks are illegal, sources familiar with the matter told CNN.

The UK’s decision marks a significant break from its closest ally and intelligence sharing partner and underscores the growing skepticism over the legality of the US military’s campaign around Latin America.

For years, the UK, which controls a number of territories in the Caribbean where it bases intelligence assets, has helped the US locate vessels suspected of carrying drugs so that the US Coast Guard could interdict them, the sources said. That meant the ships would be stopped, boarded, its crew detained, and drugs seized.
