Abrego Garcia’s mistaken deportation to his home country of El Salvador earlier this year has helped galvanize opposition to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. His attorneys claim the administration is now manipulating the immigration system in order to punish him for successfully challenging that deportation.

A motion from the government filed in U.S. District Court in Maryland late on Friday says officials have received assurances from Liberia that Abrego Garcia would not face persecution or torture there. Further, it says an immigration officer heard Abrego Garcia’s claims that he feared deportation to the West African nation, but ruled against him.

His attorneys argue in a separate Friday filing that Abrego Garcia has already designated Costa Rica as a country where he is willing to be deported. They claim the government now must send him there. The fact that officials continue to pursue deportation to other countries is evidence that the process is retaliatory and violates due process protections, they argue.

A recently opened 758-metre-long bridge in China's southwestern Sichuan province collapsed on Tuesday, with no casualties reported.

The Hongqi bridge, located on a national highway linking the country's heartland with Tibet, had only been completed earlier this year.

Safety concerns prompted the closure, as conditions on the mountainside worsened significantly by Tuesday afternoon.

Ghislaine Maxwell, the co-conspirator of the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, is in the process of seeking a commutation of her 20-year prison sentence from President Donald Trump, a whistleblower has told House Democrats.

According to the whistleblower, whose identity the committee has not revealed, Maxwell has received what was described as “concierge-style” treatment at the minimum security prison camp that she was transferred to, including customized meals, permission to go to the exercise area after hours, and time to play with a puppy that was being trained by an inmate to become a service dog, among other things.

The whistleblower also claimed that a top official at the prison camp complained he is “sick of having to be Maxwell’s bitch.”

Testimonies documented by PCHR’s lawyers and field researchers contain harrowing testimonies relating to cases of rape perpetrated by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) against Palestinian civilians, including women, who were arrested from different areas across the Gaza Strip over the past two years.

Among these cases is N.A., a 42-year-old Palestinian woman and mother who was arrested while passing through an Israeli checkpoint set up in northern Gaza in November 2024.

“At dawn I heard the soldiers shouting, saying that morning prayers were forbidden, and I think it was the fourth day after my arrest from Gaza. The soldiers moved me to a place I didn’t know because my eyes were blindfolded, and they ordered me to take off my clothes. I did so. They put me on a metal table, pressed my chest and head against it, cuffed my hands to the end of the bed, and pulled my legs apart forcefully. I felt a penis penetrating my anus and a man raping me. I started screaming, and they beat me on my back and head while I was blindfolded. I felt the man who was raping me ejaculate inside my anus. I kept screaming and being beaten, and I could hear a camera—so I believe they were filming me. The rape lasted about 10 minutes. After that, they left me for an hour in the same position, with my hands cuffed to the bed with metal handcuffs, my face on the bed, my feet on the floor, and I was completely naked.

Again, after an hour, I was raped fully in the same position, with penetration into my vagina, and I was beaten while I screamed. There were several soldiers; I heard them laughing and the camera clicking as it took pictures. This rape was very quick and there was no ejaculation. During the rape they beat me with their hands on my head and back.

Gate of Ivrel, by CJ Cherryh, is a fantastic blend of science fiction and fantasy. Great characters, a fun world, and just so well written. I loved this book, one of my favorites of the year for sure.
