Video of the sailboat and interview with Neoline CEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUdaBnJ58jI

Informative comment by /u/thatjoachim:

Especially in France, the industry is very innovative. Here are some of the wind-powered cargo ship companies:

  • Néoline (based in Nantes), one ship (which we see on the video), more are yet to come

  • Vela (based in Bayonne), 5 ships are expected to be launched between 2026 and 2028

  • TOWT (based in Le Havre), 2 ships since 2024, 6 more are being built

  • Windcoop (based in Marseille), expected launch of their first ship in 2027

  • Grain de Sail (based in Saint-Malo), 3 ships, their chocolate is delicious

some other names, though I don’t know as much about >them: Hisseo, Fairtransport, Bourlingue et Pacotille, Heol Sailing

If you want to see their respective sizes, here’s a diagram showing the ships side by side with a famous sail ship (the Bélem) and the famous cargo that blocked the Suez Canal, the Evergiven

Some more info about wind powered and wind assisted cargo ships around the globe:

In fact in Paris I can buy coffee that is specifically transported by wind power: https://www.fcco.fr/

Appeals Raise Funds for Emergency Medical Aid to Cuba in Aftermath of Hurricane Melissa

November 1, 2025

The representative of Poland, speaking on behalf of Czechia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, as well as his own government, told the assembly the group would abstain, citing Cuba’s alleged support of “Russia in its war of aggression against Ukraine.” He echoed one of Washington’s charges, accusing Havana of “turning a blind eye on the active participation of its nationals in an illegal war of aggression… we refer specifically to the large number of Cuban nationals who are participating in ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine just across our borders.”

On October 11, Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MinRex) had issued a statement rejecting these very allegations as “slanderous.” It pointed out that since these accusations were first made in 2023 no evidence or substantiation has been offered.

The former Duke of York is in line to receive a large one-off payment and an annual stipend designed to prevent him overspending in his new life as a commoner, the Guardian understands.

One option for a relocation settlement, as the king strives for a “once and for all” solution to the problem of Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, includes an initial six-figure sum to cover his move from Royal Lodge in Windsor to private accommodation in Sandringham, Norfolk.

This would be followed by an annuity, paid from Charles’s private funds, and thought to be several times Mountbatten Windsor’s £20k-a-year navy pension, sources close to the matter said. Talks on the relocation package are believed to be ongoing.

I'm currently using NPM and upgrading to a new VPS for my business. I have a public website and am going to host a few more for friends, plus a few other services. Everything is on docker for ease. I use Cloudflare for DNS so would prefer using a DNS challenge. I will change this at some point but not yet ready to!

Should I:

  1. stick with Nginx Proxy Manager which I know well (is it really that insecure or outdated?)
  2. switch to NPM Plus (assuming this is the easiest)
  3. switch to Caddy (seems to be there most recommended but will be a learning curve for me)
  4. Try out Nginx (seems like a massive learning curve so I'm very reluctant)

Hey friends. I finally fired nextcloud - and so should you.

edit: wow. reddit banned me for posting a link to my (completely unmonitezed, unproductized) blog in multiple r/selfhosted threads. I bet it's related to this lemmy link

The Israeli military's top lawyer has resigned after saying that she was responsible for the leaking of a video that purportedly shows soldiers sexually abusing a Palestinian detainee last year.

Maj Gen Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, the military advocate general, had been on leave since a criminal investigation was launched by police earlier this week into how the surveillance video at the Sde Teiman detention facility was leaked.

"I approved the release of material to the media in an attempt to counter false propaganda against the army's law enforcement authorities," she said. That is a reference to efforts by some right-wing political figures in Israel to claim that the video and reports of abuse of detainees were fabricated.

Italian envoy says Lai has been in prison since 2020 for ‘peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression’

[...]

Lai, the 77-year-old founder of the now-shuttered newspaper Apple Daily, is awaiting a verdict on charges of sedition and collusion with foreign powers under Hong Kong’s draconian national security law.

The ailing pro-democracy activist has pleaded not guilty, but faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.

[...]

Italy’s special envoy for religious freedom, Davide Dionisi, said the foreign ministry "will play its part" in calling for Lai’s release after meeting the media mogul’s son this week.

“It is necessary to work, also in international forums, using the tools of politics and diplomacy, to put an end to Jimmy Lai's suffering," Mr Dionisi said. "He has been in prison since December 2020 for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression," he added.

Mr Dionisi's statement comes just days after US president Donald Trump said he would raise Lai's case during his meeting with Chinese president Xi Jinping in South Korea on Thursday. It was immediately unclear whether Mr Trump raised the issue with his Chinese counterpart.

I’m screwing around with a locally running LLM, and it recommended me a Microsoft Excel for Linux program, so I thought I’d look around (I’m bored).

I knew Reddit has its own crap AI now, but there are now also links to it within posts/comments. Was this known already?

Hello Self Hosters! I am new-ish... got Jellyfin working great with tailscale remote access! I love it! I keep getting deeper into this stuff and geeking out... really excited to add my next service: Self-Hosted Nextcloud.

Would someone kindly walk me through setting up reverse proxy to my stuff with Caddy? I really just want HTTPS support, as my media files are one thing, but hosting all my personal info/docs on NextCloud is quite another thing to potentially expose....I want to make sure I harden properly, and HTTPS is clearly a part of that, even if I'm running a tailscale VPN. I have done my best following the docs/tutorial so far, but I've hit the wall with this "start" page.... Here's what I've got:

  • pointed my domain "A" DNS to my website as a sub-domain... so my address in caddyfile is "sub.mydomain.com"
  • I've installed caddy directly on my unbuntu server, but I admin my Jellyfin (and eventually Nextcloud) with Docker via CasaOS interface... is this a problem? Do I need to run Caddy in docker too?
  • I've followed the instructions on this start page and I still only get the startpage at "sub.mydomain.com"
  • my tailnet server IP address is what I'm using for the reverse proxy... that's correct, yes?
  • So many things/guides just say "reverse-proxy --to ..." but when I do that, I get an error saying port 80 is 'already in use' I have combed my configs & devices on my router...nothing is using port 80 that I can see. Ports 80 and 443 ARE forwarded/open, before you ask! -My next big step in this journey is piHole, so if this will interfere/interact with that in some important way, I appreciate the heads-up mightily!

Thank you in advance, I appreciate it!

EDIT! - CasaOS uses 80 as default gateway, turns out! So, switched that... now Caddy is starting properly... STILL can't get the 'welcome' page to go away.... still a problem with my caddyfile I suppose.

Overall Summary

The speaker, Nick, delivers a monologue critiquing US foreign policy and its allies, framing global conflicts as a struggle between a US-led imperialist "axis of evil" and anti-imperialist forces. He argues that the US ruling class uses false pretexts (like human rights) to justify aggression against nations like Venezuela and China, while supporting genuine human rights violators like Israel and Japan. The core theme is that the real motivation is resource control (oil, critical minerals) and global dominance. The latter part of the transcript is an interview with Dr. Jill Stein, focusing on organizing strategies to counter this imperialism, particularly by stopping the genocide in Gaza through labor action and international pressure.

Key Points & Segment Timestamps

Segment 1: Introduction & The Case of Venezuela (0:08 - 2:50)

  • Timestamp: 0:08 - 2:50
  • Key Points:
    • Open Admission of Imperialism: Neoconservatives are openly discussing plans to violate international law to destabilize and destroy Venezuela.
    • Real Motives: The hostility towards Nicolás Maduro is not due to human rights or drug trafficking, but because Venezuela has the world's largest oil reserves and critical minerals, and Maduro refuses to be a US puppet.
    • Hypocrisy of the Ruling Class: The same people supporting Israel's actions and sanctioning the International Criminal Court (ICC) are portraying Maduro as a "uniquely evil tyrant."
    • Public Opposition: The American people oppose war with Venezuela, which is why media like 60 Minutes runs "pro-war propaganda" to manufacture consent.

Segment 2: The Pattern of "Sellout" Leaders & Historical Revisionism (2:53 - 6:57)

  • Timestamp: 2:53 - 6:57
  • Key Points:
    • Critique of US Leadership: The US ruling class, including Trump, Obama, and Biden, are "gangsters" who engage in war crimes and protect pedophiles.
    • Rejection of Non-Violence: The working class is told to be non-violent while the ruling class's "first go-to" for solving problems is violence.
    • The "New Axis of Evil": Israel's actions in Gaza have shown that international law is meaningless, "opening the floodgates" for other nations to commit atrocities with impunity.
    • Imperial Japan's Resurgence:
      • Argues that Imperial Japan was "easily worse than the Nazis" and its crimes have been whitewashed by the West.
      • China bore the brunt of the fight against Japan for a decade before the US joined.
      • The current Japanese ruling party, a "US puppet for 75 years," refuses to apologize for its war crimes, mirroring rhetoric in the US.

Segment 3: Japan's Prime Minister as a US Puppet (6:57 - 17:10)

  • Timestamp: 6:57 - 17:10
  • Key Points:
    • Embarrassing Display: The new Prime Minister, Sane Takichi, is portrayed as a "happy little puppet" of the US, exemplified by a viral video of her jumping for joy at a US military base.
    • Ignoring Domestic Issues: Instead of addressing Japan's suicide crisis, poor work-life balance, and economic anxiety, her focus is on a "hawkish approach to China" and increasing military spending.
    • A Pattern of "Evil" Female Leaders: The speaker argues that female leaders approved by the West (e.g., Ursula von der Leyen, this Japanese PM) are "bloodthirsty tyrants," not figures to be celebrated by feminists.

Segment 4: Taiwan and the "Sellout" Model (17:10 - 23:35)

  • Timestamp: 17:10 - 23:35
  • Key Points:
    • Taiwan is Part of China: The speaker affirms the "One China" policy, calling Taiwan's president a "glorified governor."
    • Adopting the "Israeli Model": Taiwan is criticized for praising Israel and Netanyahu, suggesting it wants to adopt Israel's model of "defense" (which the speaker equates with using starvation as a weapon).
    • The Pattern Repeats: This aligns Taiwan with other "sellout" leaders (in Japan, Venezuela, Brazil) who sell out their people to US imperialism and Zionism.
    • Contrast with Maduro: Nicolás Maduro is praised for standing in solidarity with Palestinian resistance, while US-backed Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado praises Netanyahu.

Segment 5: Interview with Dr. Jill Stein - Organizing and Strategy (23:15 - End)

  • Timestamp: 23:15 - 1:17:23
  • Key Points:
    • We Are Winning Public Opinion: Stein argues that public opinion has turned dramatically against Israel and Zionism since the start of the genocide, and the pro-genocide side is "scared shitless."
    • Reject Powerlessness: The ruling class's main goal is to make people feel powerless and hopeless. She urges people to reject this narrative.
    • The "Uniting for Peace" UN Initiative: This is a primary strategy to bypass the US veto in the Security Council. It would allow the General Assembly (where ~90% of nations support Palestine) to send a protection force at Palestine's request.
    • Action Item: Go to lifelineforpalestine.com to sign petitions and support this initiative.
    • Critique of the "Trump Plan": The so-called peace plan is an "ultimatum for surrender" and an "investment plan" for Trump's family, not a real solution. It has already been violated repeatedly.
    • The Power of Labor:
      • Praises Chris Smalls and the Amazon Labor Union for linking workers' rights with internationalism.
      • Highlights the Italian union U.S.B., which has successfully shut down ports to block weapons to Israel.
      • Five Demands for the AFL-CIO: A petition (bit.ly/DisarmGenocide | [https://secure.everyaction.com/FygyRgBN1EKc_S_Ab1kehg2]) demands that major US labor unions recognize the genocide, condemn the attack on Chris Smalls, and use their power to refuse shipping weapons to Israel.
    • Critique of the Democratic Party & "No Kings" Rally: Stein and the host dismiss figures like AOC and the "No Kings" rally as "Democratic Party astroturf" that silences true anti-imperialist voices and is beholden to Zionist and oligarchic funders.

Emirati influencers and an official Israeli state X account have been targeting the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on social media, while its paramilitary rival, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has massacred hundreds of civilians in Sudan's el-Fasher.

As many came out on social media to criticise the United Arab Emirates (UAE), whose support for the RSF is well-documented, influencers from the UAE have responded by going after the SAF.

Notably, Israeli accounts, including the country’s official Arabic language account, have also joined in. Amjad Taha, an Emirati analyst who often appears on western media, has led the charge to link the SAF to the Muslim Brotherhood and to Hamas in Gaza.

i am not looking to manipulate or convince anybody, just something informative in general, like "this is the bigtech world, this is the open source / selfhosted world." any good knowledge bases, blogs, youtube channels and alike that you would recommend? the less technical, the better. it's not about "how to install this and that" but rather "what do i need this and that for, what are the advantes and what are the downsides". also, are there resources like that in your language (if you or your people are not english native speakers)?

also very interested in anything else you have to share regarding your personal selfhosting experience and how it may or may not affect those around you.

i'll start: in my own experience, there are so many other things going on in people's life, that i understand are far more important than whether their todo list is stored on their own disk or in some other part of the world. especially in the beginning, going open source / selfhosted does often feel like losing comfort, only to be left with more to take care about in return. so getting started as a non-technical person seems incredibly difficult. another thing that comes to mind is, yes i could do the selfhosting for related people and friends, and yes they would trust me with some of their data – but no i don't want that. not because i am not willing to help, but i honestly don't want to have access to their data, it just doesn't feel correct.

thanks for your inputs and have a nice weekend!
