So I get that the GOP has to remove these "illegal immigrants." But it looks like they're just putting them on airplanes? Are there like Uhaul trucks for all their stuff following them? Does their family members keep it? What if they don't have any family?

I know when we were rounding up the Japaneses that a bunch of non Japanese folks stepped in to take their stuff.

Like okay I'm not supposed to live here but I still own this house and car. Plus my I just paid the Netflix subscription. Maybe I have a family I like so I have some photos of them that aren't on my phone because I've lived here for a long time before all the pictures went on the phones some are even polaroids. Do you get to bring your ATM card? What if they charge really high international fees?

Beer is more than just a drink, it can bring people together, claims Dolf van den Brink, CEO of Heineken. Speaking to the Financial Times, he said that in an era where isolation and mental health challenges are the new normal, beer’s qualities as a “social lubricant” could be a key part of discussions about alcohol.

Heineken boss on ‘social role’ of beer

On Thursday, the Dutch brewing giant announced a five-year plan aimed at boosting beer sales. Like many alcohol producers, the company has struggled with weaker consumer demand in recent years. Shares have dropped by a fifth compared to their 2023 peak. “In this time of loneliness and a mental health epidemic, beer’s role in bringing people together is important to make part of the public debate,” van den Brink told FT a day after.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) beer and other alcoholic beverages are not considered safe for health. In a 2023 statement, the WHO claimed that even small or “moderate” amounts of alcohol can be harmful. Alcohol is classified as a “carcinogen,” meaning it can cause cancer, and no safe limit exists.

At a time when health authorities around the world are warning about alcohol risks, Heineken claims that moderate drinking also has a social purpose. According to Brink, the relationship between alcohol and health is complex and deserves a balanced conversation. “We do believe that it’s not always reported in a balanced way,” he said, adding, “because the relationship between alcohol and health is complex.”

The company’s CEO gave historical examples of people drinking beer together in Mesopotamia and Egypt, showing that beer has long been a part of social life. “Beer is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, consumer goods category,” he said. Heineken now also offers non-alcoholic beers, giving people a way to enjoy social moments without consuming alcohol. Keeping urban loneliness in mind, especially in crowded cities, the company has launched “Rooftop Revival,” events that turn unused rooftops into lively social spaces. “There is a legitimate debate in society now about the effect of moderate consumption of alcohol, including beer, on health. And again, we believe that needs to be a balanced and nuanced discussion,” he told FT.

What the WHO says about beer and alcohol

According to the World Heath Organisation, risks associated with alcohol include: Certain types of cancer (such as breast, liver, and colon cancer), Heart disease and stroke, Liver cirrhosis, Mental health disorders, etc.

“Alcohol is a toxic, psychoactive, and dependence-producing substance and has been classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer decades ago, this is the highest risk group, which also includes asbestos, radiation and tobacco,” WHO said in a statement.

China’s multi-year property crisis is set to drag on in 2026 and further weigh on banks’ asset quality, even after the government stepped up its stimulus push to boost demand, according to Fitch Ratings.

The country’s new home sales by area may decline 15 to 20 per cent from their current level before the sector stabilises, Lulu Shi, a director at Fitch, said at a briefing in Shanghai on Wednesday (Oct 29). Transactions by value may drop another 7 to 10 per cent next year, she added.

“China’s trickling stimulus measures did not pull the residential sector from a further slowdown,” Shi said. “A meaningful property recovery will only come after the job market stabilises and household income rebounds, which would require a basket of policies and a long period of time.”

The dim outlook for the domestic home market also means banks’ bad debt in the property segment will likely remain “elevated” next year, Vivian Xue, director for financial institutions at Fitch, said at the same briefing. That, coupled with households’ weakened ability to repay mortgages and other personal loans, means that banks’ asset quality could deteriorate next year, she added.

Fixed income-specialist Pimco has identified new risks to China’s growth strategy.

In response to China’s aggressive price discounting, many Emerging Markets economies have erected higher tariff and trade barriers on Chinese goods imports, it writes in a report.

Europe has initiated investigations into Chinese product dumping and may increase the use of quotas. The U.S. has raised tariffs on all trading partners, but especially on Chinese goods, which has limited the ability of Chinese producers to access the U.S. market at lower tariff rates through “connector” countries for final stages of production. Although markets have shown signs of optimism for U.S.–China trade negotiations ahead of the countries’ presidents meeting this week, the relationship between these two major economies will likely remain volatile.

Looking ahead, inventories can’t keep piling up forever if China wants to counter deflationary trends and maintain a stable economy. China’s policymakers have recently emphasized an “anti-involution” campaign: a nuanced approach to counter the intense competition that shrunk profit margins and to emphasize higher-quality growth and greater profitability, with a goal of reducing deflationary pressures.

However, unless Chinese policymakers are willing to more forcefully stimulate domestic demand, or tolerate slower production growth, Chinese products would need to continue to be exported at further price discounts to clear the inventory levels, Pimco says.
