What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is a selfhosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. Voting is used to bring the most interesting items to the top.

Think of it as an opensource alternative to reddit!

  • We introduce a new measure of AI displacement risk, observed exposure, that combines theoretical LLM capability and real-world usage data, weighting automated (rather than augmentative) and work-related uses more heavily
  • AI is far from reaching its theoretical capability: actual coverage remains a fraction of what's feasible
  • Occupations with higher observed exposure are projected by the BLS to grow less through 2034
  • Workers in the most exposed professions are more likely to be older, female, more educated, and higher-paid
  • We find no systematic increase in unemployment for highly exposed workers since late 2022, though we find suggestive evidence that hiring of younger workers has slowed in exposed occupations

  • Stanford researchers launched an open-source platform for collecting screenome data to study health behaviors.
  • The system simplifies data collection for researchers without technical expertise, removing previous barriers to screenome research.
  • By addressing privacy concerns with strict protocols, the initiative seeks to make meaningful interventions possible, paving the way for personalized health insights.

The key, he argued, would be reducing the number of missiles fired in each attack. “If #Iran keeps the volume of each barrage below 50 missiles, it can prolong this war for weeks,” said Mahmoudian, an expert on Iran’s #military and regional policy.

“Iran has no problem with the number of missiles and possesses a significant stock of projectiles, especially now that the battlefield has expanded across the #MiddleEast and it can rely on a large part of its arsenal, including short-range missiles.”

However, scaling down attacks would also reduce their impact, he noted.

YA THINK?

“Corporate bullshit is a specific style of communication that uses confusing, abstract buzzwords in a functionally misleading way,” said Littrell, a postdoctoral researcher in the College of Arts and Sciences. “Unlike technical jargon, which can sometimes make office communication a little easier, corporate bullshit confuses rather than clarifies. It may sound impressive, but it is semantically empty.”

Elon Musk’s xAI has lost its bid for a preliminary injunction that would have temporarily blocked California from enforcing a law that requires AI firms to publicly share information about their training data.

xAI had tried to argue that California’s Assembly Bill 2013 (AB 2013) forced AI firms to disclose carefully guarded trade secrets.

The law requires AI developers whose models are accessible in the state to clearly explain which dataset sources were used to train models, when the data was collected, if the collection is ongoing, and whether the datasets include any data protected by copyrights, trademarks, or patents. Disclosures would also clarify whether companies licensed or purchased training data and whether the training data included any personal information. It would also help consumers assess how much synthetic data was used to train the model, which could serve as a measure of quality.

Netbird is king. (lemmy.fedioasis.cc)

Figured I'd give Netbird a go, glad I did because I can self host extremely easily by using the new services feature.

You specify a subdomain, point to a peer, specify a protocol and port, and you are good. NetBird fetches you the certificate and your site goes live fast.

I can use my Immich with my mobile data now.

Edit: Note that I choose to self host NetBird, and haven't really used the service they provide all that much.

Argentina recorded the world’s second-worst industrial decline from 2023 to 2025, said a consulting firm that analyzed data from the United Nations.

In the last two years, Argentina’s manufacturing sector fell by 7.9%, surpassed only by Hungary, which fell by 8.2%, said the consultancy Audemus, founded by former Minister of Productive Development Matías Kulfas.

Audeumus analyzed data from 56 out of the 81 countries surveyed by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.

On Tuesday March 3, approximately 100 students at San Diego State University demonstrated to express their opposition to the criminal war against Iran launched over the weekend by the United States and Israel in violation of international law.

The demonstration drew participation from students in the vicinity, several student organizations, and interest from dozens of students who could be seen standing at the windows of buildings near where speeches were taking place. Protesters rallied and then marched across campus. Students wore keffiyehs, carried Palestinian flags and handmade anti-war signs reading “I am not dying for the Epstein class,” “No war on Iran” and “End American Imperialism.”

The Trump regime has launched this war amid overwhelming popular opposition. Its outbreak is imparting renewed urgency to the reemergence of the student movement that began in 2023 against the genocide in Gaza and to the development of a mass anti-war movement rooted in the working class.

The country is waiting to see if the government seizes on this moment to disarm the Iranian-backed armed group and how the militants will respond.

For much of the past year, Lebanon’s government has walked a tightrope in its dealings with the Iranian-backed armed group Hezbollah as it has moved to disarm the militants and curb their influence in Lebanese politics.

Now, as Lebanon faces a rapidly escalating conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, the country is waiting to see if the government seizes on this moment to take decisive action against Hezbollah — and how the group will respond.

. . .

“This is the tipping point,” said Sami Nader, the director of the Institute of Political Science at Saint Joseph University of Beirut. “Either we have the dark scenario where the army clashes with Hezbollah and there is civil strife, or Hezbollah abides by the government decision and they disarm.”

What makes this Not The Onion to me is how normalized this story is. How did things get to this point? Would she be happy with a job that only had a 2.5 hour commute each way!? Maybe, and that is what makes it existentially funny to me.

For example, an increase in the commuting time for the average respondent by only 15 min would have to be compensated by a net wage increase of almost 12%.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0927537124001271

The analysis relies on data from the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. By determining the average time people spend commuting in metro areas and the average hourly wage in those areas, the analysis calculates the dollar value of a worker's commuting time over a year.
