We need journalism.

Journalism requires enormous resources. It's hard to do it on your own. You need a newsroom. Not all for-profit newspapers are bad. Even the corporate-owned Financial Times publishes good journalism:

https://www.ft.com/content/8c6041ff-a223-43e9-9e45-53c3f7cf47f7

But the issue with for-profit news organizations is corporate influence. Look at Rupert Murdoch. He translates his influence into personal power. The Prime Ministers of Australia publically said they are afraid of him.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-02-19/former-pm-kevin-rudd-says-he-was-fearful-of-murdoch-media/13173242

https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/utterly-unaccountable-turnbull-labels-news-corp-the-most-powerful-political-actor-in-australia-20210412-p57idq.html

We need more non-profit quality journalism.

For-profit media can be bought. You don't want Billionaire thugs owning the media. That's what happening in many countries. Look at India. Billionaire Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani are purchasing newspaper and removing good journalism critical of Narendra Modi.

Look at Hungary.

Hell, just look at what happened in Israel. Even if you hate Israel, you should pay attention to Israeli politics. People often forget how Benjamin Netanyahu became the longest serving leader in Israeli history.

It was because of billionaires helping him.

Israel has much stricter laws on individuals donating to political campaigns, so Sheldon Adelson got around that in 2007 by founding a free, giveaway newspaper in Israel — Israel Hayom — whose sole purpose is to back Netanyahu, attack his enemies in politics and the media, and enforce a far-right political agenda to prevent any Israeli territorial compromise on the West Bank

Graphically attractive, Israel Hayom is now the biggest-circulation daily in Israel. Precisely because it is free, it is putting a heavy strain on competitors, like Yediot and Haaretz, which both charge and are not pro-Netanyahu.

Adelson then bought the most important newspaper of the religious-nationalist right in Israel, Makor Rishon, long considered the main backer of Netanyahu’s biggest right-wing rival

Last November at a conference of the Israel American Council, a lobbying group Adelson has funded, he joked in a public discussion with a wealthy Israeli: “Why don’t you and I go after The New York Times?”

Told it was family owned, Adelson quipped, “There is only one way to fight it: money.”

We need media that can't be sold. And we need many of them. And we need them to be well-funded.

You don't want to donate money to 1 guy alone on Substack. Perhaps he is well-meaning. But ideally, you want a newsroom. An actual organization with a track record of doing powerful work.

So here is a list of non-profit news organizations.

Please support them. Even $1 a month is great. Complaining about corporate power on Lemmy is easy but it doesn't achieve much.

Thank you

What a mess of a time we live in when a state police department and national broadcaster act with such impunity.

The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) has urged major European insurers and security technology providers to reevaluate their reliance on Hikvision and Dahua products, citing growing evidence of human rights violations, cybersecurity risks, and their use in conflict zones, according to a WUC announcement.

"This is a call for responsible risk management," said WUC President Turghunjan Alawudun. "Protecting clients' data, reputations, and safety begins with acknowledging the risks embedded in the technologies you rely on. The situation demands internal audits and a careful re-evaluation of future partnerships. Our message is simple: if you doubt a technology's security, don't install it," the release quoted him as saying.

In September 2025, the WUC, along with Don't Fund Russian Army (DFRA) and Bourdon & Associes, filed a criminal complaint in France against Huawei, Hikvision, and Dahua. The complaint presents substantial evidence that technologies provided by these firms have been used to enable large-scale ethnic surveillance of Uyghurs -- actions internationally recognised as crimes against humanity and genocide.

...

The WUC has written to leading European firms, urging them to conduct internal audits, review partnerships with high-risk manufacturers, and consider the phased discontinuation of Hikvision and Dahua products, according to the release.

Recipients include major insurance providers Allianz and Munich Re in Germany; VidaCaixa, Mapfre, Mutua Madrilena, and Grupo Catalana Occidente (GCO) in Spain; and AXA, Credit Agricole Assurances, CNP Assurances, and Covea in France.

The letter also reached leading video-surveillance integrators and installers, including Securitas Deutschland (Securitas Holding GmbH), KOTTER, and Securiton Deutschland (Securiton GmbH) in Germany; Securitas Seguridad Espana, Prosegur Seguridad, Securitas Direct by Verisure, Grupo Control Seguridad, Segurma, and Vaelsys in Spain; and Goron S.A.S., Videoconsult, Ubitech Business, OPTI SÉCURITÉ, Nexecur, and IMA Protect in France, as highlighted in the WUC release.

A recent trio of articles in Time Magazine has led to backlash in Taiwan, particularly seeing as the three articles frame current Taiwanese president Lai Ching-te as being dangerously pro-independence. The three articles are by thinktank analyst Lyle Goldstein, retired People’s Liberation Army senior colonel Zhou Bo, and Time editor Charlie Campbell.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it never occurred to Time that a Taiwanese voice should be included in a discussion about Taiwan’s future, instead confining discussion solely to Westerners and Chinese nationals. This backlash against Taiwan proves ironic–the DPP has long been lambasted by foreign correspondents based in Taiwan for privileging Time Magazine above any other publication when it came to features, interviews, or profiles of heads of state. It is probable that the articles were released ahead of an upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in which the two will discuss Taiwan, in an attempt to influence Trump’s decision-making.

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) has found that France is responsible for grave and systematic violations of the rights of unaccompanied migrant children, stating that many are being left homeless, deprived of basic care, and living in conditions that the Committee described as “degrading” and “contrary to human dignity”.

The Committee concluded that France has breached its obligations under the Convention on the Rights of the Child by violating a wide range of children’s rights. These include the best interests of the child, the rights to health care and education, as well as the prohibition of detention for migration-related reasons and inhuman or degrading treatment, among others.

Germany, like other European governments, has generally considered such returns as voluntary gestures of goodwill, and “interstate (political) affairs,” rather than part of a duty to repair historic and ongoing colonial harm affecting communities.

18 WEAPONS OUT actions in a week of continent wide antimilitarist shenanigans. From Elbit to Marand to Saab to Boeing we used dragons, frogs and furries to harass the war profiteers .

We tried new tactics and forged new bonds. The Rebel Choir was born. Bombs 4 Billionaires popped out of a bottle of Bollinger. Tree Frogs Against Genocide gave Leonardo the shittiest day ever. We picketed and blocked and occupied and rallied for

Homes Not Guns Food Not Bombs. Planets Not Profits.

Gratitude to all the creative minds and hot bodies that got in the way of the war machine during Weapons OUT!

Hey all. Unemployed and looking for something fun/interesting to work on lol

I use gadgetbridge to connect to a smart ring to track some basic health data, and while having everything on the phone is OK, I much prefer doing/viewing things from my PC. I thought maybe having some kind of self hosted dashboard/site displaying data gathered by gadgetbridge could be cool, but what do you guys think? Anything more interesting that could be done with the database that it can export on a schedule? I've also considered having gadgetbridge as one of several sources, but I'm not sure how many other privacy conscious options are out there.

I'm thinking of just leaving the transferring of the database to other programs, would that be acceptable? I already have gadgetbridge export every 2hrs and use syncthing to get it onto the NAS.

Would appreciate any thoughts, or if you think it's unnecessary even.

Result falls short of giving Milei a congressional majority but surprises many analysts after series of scandals

The party of Argentina’s far-right president, Javier Milei, has won Sunday’s midterm elections after a campaign in which Donald Trump announced a $40bn bailout for the country and made continued aid conditional on the victory of his Argentinian counterpart.

With more than 95% of ballots counted, La Libertad Avanza secured 40.84% of the nationwide vote, in an election widely seen as a de facto referendum on the self-styled anarcho-capitalist’s nearly two years in power. The Peronist opposition, Fuerza Patria, secured 31.67%.

While the result falls short of giving Milei a congressional majority – which remains with the Peronists – it has surprised Argentinian analysts, given the recent blows to the libertarian’s popularity from corruption allegations involving his sister to the current economic crisis.

British journalist Sami Hamdi was reportedly detained on Sunday morning by federal immigration authorities at San Francisco international airport, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair) says that action is apparent retaliation for the Muslim political commentator’s criticism of Israel while touring the US.

A statement from Cair said it was “a blatant affront to free speech” to detain Hamdi for criticizing Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza while he engaged on a speaking tour in the US. A Trump administration official added in a separate statement that Hamdi is facing deportation.

The Quebec government says it will ban religious symbols in the province's daycare centres.

Secularism Minister Jean-François Roberge says there is a "broad consensus" that Quebecers want secularism to be strengthened.

The announcement follows a recommendation made this summer by a committee tasked with advising the province on how to enhance secularism. The committee had called for the ban to be extended to daycares.

Quebec has already banned public sector workers in positions of authority, such as teachers and judges, from wearing religious symbols on the job.
