The protest on Wednesday night – called by gen Z protesters, transport workers and civil groups – was the latest in a series of demonstrations against corruption and rising crime, which led to the dramatic midnight ouster of former president Dina Boluarte last Thursday.

An estimated 100,000 nurses, teachers and public sector staff walked off the job in New Zealand on Thursday to call on the government to better fund and resource public services, in one of the country’s largest ever strikes.

The so-called “mega strike” brought together workers from multiple sectors, including more than 60,000 school teachers, 40,000 nurses and salaried medical specialists and 15,000 public service staff.

Students at British university campuses in China must swear allegiance to the Chinese Communist Party [CCP], a report has found.

At least 45 universities in the UK have lucrative partnerships with Chinese academic institutions to teach and award British degrees under a scheme called Joint Educational Institutes (JEIs).

The China Strategic Risks Institute (CSRI), a think tank, has analysed policy documents and university publications to reveal “large-scale Chinese Communist Party (CCP) ideological control” over these British overseas outposts.

The findings raise fresh questions on Chinese influence over British universities and the risks this poses to academic freedom, amid a crisis in the UK government over designating Beijing a threat to national security.

Students enrolled at the JEI campuses are, in theory, treated the same as home-taught students and subject to the same UK regulatory obligations.

However, thousands of undergraduates at some of the outposts have been required to take part in state-backed ceremonies, during which they are told to serve the “motherland” by pledging their unwavering support to the CCP.

The report claims these activities form part of “indoctrination campaigns”, which are presented as extracurricular activities.

The Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University, which was founded nearly 20 years ago, convened nearly 1,000 students for a flag-raising ceremony in 2021 to mark the 100th anniversary of the party’s creation.

Details of the event were posted in Mandarin on the institution’s website, with images showing students standing behind uniformed guards as they hoist China’s flag. The university’s president, who is also a party secretary, told students in a speech they must have “strong patriotism” and “love their great motherland” and always “resolutely listen to the party and follow the party”.

In a programme co-organised by the Dundee International Institute of Central South University, hundreds of students took part in a military-style ceremony in 2022 during which they “pledged their allegiance to the party with concrete actions”.

More than 1,000 students, many in soldiers’ uniforms, gathered in a sports arena, using their bodies to form a large CCP hammer and sickle emblem which changed colour.

“Rest assured, the party will make our country strong,” the university’s website said in a press release about the occasion, adding that the entire faculty and students sang the national anthem and saluted.

In 2023, staff and students at Southampton Ocean Engineering Joint Institute, based in Harbin, China, were photographed raising their fists towards the Chinese flag during a trip to a museum in honour of President Xi’s previous visit, according to the report.

At least 12 employees at the Queen Mary school were identified by the CSRI as having jobs related to CCP work, including seven who were said to be responsible for the “ideological education” and “value guidance” of the students.

The two universities are among several in the UK which have reported significant financial income from their campuses in China, with the University of Nottingham generating £9.55 million in 2023 and Queen Mary University of London generating £16.57 million.

The European Union's 19th package of sanctions against Russia will list four companies involved in China's oil industry that circumvent Western restrictions, EU diplomatic sources said on Wednesday.

They said the package lists two independent Chinese oil refineries, a Chinese trading firm and an entity involved in circumvention. The latter is mostly involved in sectors outside oil, they said. The sources declined to provide further details.

The EU has toughened its stance on Beijing as diplomatic efforts have stalled. EU sanctions envoy David O'Sullivan told Reuters earlier this month that China still denies doing anything other than "normal trade" three years into Russia's war in Ukraine. The EU, Ukraine and its allies view China as a central node in Moscow's sanctions circumvention network.

The Chinese listings are not the EU's first but they are the most economically significant. In previous packages, the EU listed Chinese entities involved in drone-making and the flow of dual-use goods to Russia. [Imposing tariffs on Canadian canola is a significant] move by China to leverage us by using economic coercion because there are 40,000 prairie farmers involved in the production of canola seeds. And it’s a $12 billion a year business. And last year, before China imposed these punitive tariffs, we sold over 4 billion to China. So it’s a big, big market. The Chinese did this in retaliation for our imposing 100% tariff on electric vehicles. The reason that we did that was that China heavily subsidizes these things, and so they would devastate our own market if they came into Canada. It’s a superior product, better battery technology, much cheaper. But the other concern which I expressed in Parliament is the potential for espionage by these machines. They’re similar to Huawei Telecoms.

China won’t let the Teslas go anywhere near sensitive sites. I mean, they gather terrific amount of information of where they go and on the people who are driving them. And there’s also like the neptech technology that we decided not to use for scanners in Canadian embassies and consulates around the world, they have software updates which come from the manufacturer. So if there was conflict between Canada and China, it’s possible that, conceivable under current conditions, that China could cripple them. So we’d really have to address those serious issues before it would be a good idea to bring them in

If we do get them to take off the tariffs on the canola, it doesn’t solve the problem, because next time China wants to leverage us to prevent us from, say, expelling agents of espionage or other concerns over Taiwan or the South China Sea or, you know, any number of things that, that we have going on with China, they can simply engage in this economic coercion on something else. They could declare our pulp and paper products are dumped, for example. So when you have a country that doesn’t respect the agreements and, and falsifies some reasons for barring Canadian products from the Chinese market, it’s sort of like whack a mole. You saw one, it’s quite likely that they would use another.

And what they want back [in exchange for reducing tariffs on canola] is what they refer to as some seek common ground while setting aside differences. So they don’t want us to pursue Chinese espionage, you know, the transfer of dual use military technologies to the Chinese state. They definitely don’t want us to enact the Foreign Influence Registry that came into law in Canada in June 2024 with Bill C70.

China I think would like us to be a supplier of raw materials for China. They’d like access to our northern resources Their, you know, their idea of China being a near Arctic state and more and more present in the Northwest Passage, I think is a concern to us overall.

China is an integrated party state, industrial military complex ... it’s all dominated by the Chinese Communist Party, which some people say is like God invisible, but everywhere present. And so, you know, when we look at how China relates with Africa, countries that they’ve been investing in in the Belt and Road and supporting enabling dictators with surveillance technologies and so on, are typically countries that have favorable port facilities that China could use for future blue water, navy and submarines.

Within Canada, you see a similar process of China gradually attempting to achieve a comprehensive influence in our country.

Not just the elections, but, you know, the attempts to subvert policymakers and to have investment in Canada that they can then leverage for their geostrategic purposes. You know, would we continue to deny China access to mining resources in the north if they would respond by punishing us economically? So I think the key here is that we shouldn’t be too dependent on the Chinese export market. So in the case of Canola, clearly we put too many, too much of our Canola into one market. And we should be trying to diversify so that when China engages in arbitrary tariff measures to leverage on other issues, that we can take the hit more readily.

US President Donald Trump is boasting of having brought peace to the Middle East, a claim that is wildly exaggerated. But he has, at least for the moment, brought an end to Israel's genocide in Gaza.

Trump's willingness to use the tools of his office to pressure Israel into accepting his terms for a ceasefire - terms quite favourable to Israel but falling short of the ambitions of its far-right government - reflects poorly on his predecessor, Joe Biden, and his 2024 presidential challenger, Kamala Harris.

It also vindicates the anti-Trump critics within the Democratic Party who implored their leaders to take a forceful stand against Israel's genocide, warning they could lose the election if they refused.

Yknow how much shit we'd get if Mustafa Kemel Ataturk was a communist? How many jokes about Fezes being banned or the current state of turkiye today or the, well, multiple genocides?

But since he was a liberal...well, the rug has some lumps in it, thats all I'll say
