Pro-Trump owner shocked as grocery store that thrived for 43 years goes bankrupt under his tariffs and policies Wong, who supported Trump in the last election, said he was swayed by campaign promises to reduce grocery costs. But now, as his business struggles to stay afloat, he admits the reality looks very different. Grocery inflation is at a two-year high, and prices continue to climb with no end in sight.

Wong told NPR that virtually all of his products have increased in price since early this year. For instance, a box of mabo tofu sauce — a popular Sichuan dish — has gone from $2.75 last year to $3.95 at the beginning of this year. “We just had this shipment come in yesterday — it’s $5. We cannot catch up. Every shipment coming in, we have to put a new price on it,” Wong said.

It's starting to reach the point where I don't really find this funny anymore and I just find it sad. Kinda like when you see an older person get scammed out of thousands of dollars by one of those IRS or tech support scams. Fear makes people do stupid things. I get it, this is what they voted for. And yes, a lot of MAGA are legitimately Nazis and deserve all the hate they get and more. But some of these people just got scammed plain and simple. When I see someone get scammed out of their life savings I don't just laugh at them and say "I told you not to fall for those IRS scams. Jesus Christ you are so fucking dumb." No, I get pissed at the scammer that took advantage of them. Fuck all those people that are actual Nazis, though.

The fact that we see so many people having regret is a good thing. I'd rather have people that realized they fucked up then people that are doubling down and defending everything Trump is doing.

I get why you don't find it funny, with how dramatic things quickly got since the start of this second term shitshow, I never felt like laughing once. But I don't feel any amount of sadness or compassion for these morons. You make a comparison with people getting scammed out of their life savings but it's not the same thing at all.

First it doesn't just affect them, people in the entire world get to suffer for their selfish stupid decision: Canadians and Greenlanders get to be threatened with annexation, fishermen off the Venezuelan coast get to be double tap murdered by drones, Ukrainians get to live under the constant threat of withdrawal of support from the US unless they sell their country for parts, us Europeans get to be spat on by a so-called "ally", Palestinian get to contend with an even more unhinged USA support of Israel and so on and so forth with the global economy, the environment, global disease prevention...So fuck them, the suffering they get is only a fraction of the suffering they unleashed in their country and the rest of the world.

And second, unlike an actual scam they didn't get confused within a few minutes time span without time to properly think. They had AT LEAST MONTHS, to think about this and research information for themselves, and when they didn't do it, other people TRIED DESPERATELY to warn them and they didn't listen, because in the end they were convinced to be smarter and didn't want to look for answers or listen to the pleas of others.

I remember a segment on national TV of my country where right before the election two women, one Democrat, one Trump voter were being interviewed. At the end they were asked what they would do if Trump won, and the Democrat woman, with some amount of anguish, said she would have to fight against feelings of despair because the consequences would be catastrophic. And the Trump voter with her fucking clipboard and condescending tone said that as a business owner she would go to work no matter what be an adult and not be "hysterical" and that voting for Trump was the rational thing to do for the economy and she hoped other people got to understand that as well instead of being "emotional". I don't really give a fuck to what happened to that woman or her business, but her and tens of millions like her forced all of us to live in a world made by their selfish stupidity and I say they don't deserve any forgiveness for that.

Wasn't there a report about people looking up what tariffs even are only after the US election? Like, you'd consider looking up things the cheeto man is talking about before casting the vote, but I guess some people need to feel like they are winning, before reality smacks them down hard.

Also all the people who suffered and died without USAID

The fact that we see so many people having regret is a good thing. I'd rather have people that realized they fucked up then people that are doubling down and defending everything Trump is doing.

And that’s why it’s not funny, but the suffering has to continue. The person in this article and many who support Trump will not see reality for what it is until it hits home and affects them dramatically.

It sucks, but there’s a lack of empathy in this cohort that means they’ll never understand the consequences of what they’ve done unless they’re directly impacted by it, and only for a prolonged enough duration for it to sink in and become a long term pattern instead of a “one-off” experience.

If you want to help, donate to your local food bank. Nobody can save these people from themselves, but you can at least ensure that they don’t starve long enough to maybe turn things around.

Yes, they got scammed, but I did my best to warn those around me, and they laughed and ridiculed me, calling me a "libtard" and "cucked". Now, I have to suffer along with these morons while American democracy circles the drain. ALL OF THIS WAS COMPLETELY FORESEEABLE AND ACTUALLY FORESEEN BY ANYONE WITH HALF A BRAIN. Does it suck for them and is sad? Sure, 100%, but they've made it suck for me and millions of others. What of the families torn apart by ICE thugs? Are they lamenting that? No, because they only give a shit about themselves and how they inadvertently hurt themselves when they thought that Trump was only going to "hurt the right people", meaning the people they hate. Accordingly, IMHO, a bit of schadenfreude is a normal reaction for everyone who easily saw all this coming.

They even had a playbook of alllll the horrible things they were going to do

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 18 points 6 days ago

And to this I'd say: they've undoubtedly been bombarded with thousands of truths about trump for a decade. They disregarded every fucking one of those truths. I have no sympathy whatsoever for people who rejected truth and never did 15 seconds of googling to learn more. These are deeply, pathologically hateful and uncurious people. I would know because I have a bunch of them in my family.

My own parents, who like to say I'm smart, have never once given a flying fuck when I tried to tell them the truth about trump. They actively don't want to know. I cannot forgive people for not caring what's true. They all knew there were consequences for people, themselves included, if they were wrong. THEY DID NOT CARE.

[–] gustofwind@lemmy.world 17 points 6 days ago (1 children)

lol the vast majority of those who regret voting for Trump will still vote Republican in every election until they die

Stop mistaking for incompetence what is so clearly malice

[–] crozilla@lemmy.world 12 points 6 days ago

Yep. They will never vote for baby-killing Demoncrats. They will always vote for the party of Goodness! The party mentioned by name in the bible, the party endorsed by white Jesus. The party of Capitalism, the way God intended. Sigh.

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 5 days ago

I think the biggest difference here is that the people who "got scammed" didn't just made a choice for themselves, they also made a choice for others.

Morally somebody who got conned out of their own life savings is one thing, somebody who got lots of people (including themselves) conned out of their life savings (and in some cases, their actual lives) is something very different.

As I see it, it boils down to people going with "I feel like", "Random post on the Internet told me" or equivalent non-info to chose the person to be in charge of running a whole damn country for the next 4 years.

Absolutely, if you're choosing something for yourself alone, go crazy, do stupid shit, whatever.

However if you're also choosing for others, if you can't make an informed choice, at least make no choice at all.

Donny 2 Inches already had a looong track record and a previous fail presidency, when Mr Wong decided that "THIS time it will be different..!". I think it's probably ok to mock this particular one, because it doesn't appear that he's capable of learning.

You might be on the wrong sub in that case lol...

[–] Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 6 days ago

They weren't scammed.

Stop giving deplorable people the benefit of the doubt.

You are the one being scammed by the feigned confusion.

100%

These people were lied to on tariffs, the economy, and affordability. They were more willing to believe those lies because they've seen their cost of living skyrocket for the last four years under Biden's presidency.

It is sad. Also sad to watch people who consider themselves conscientious people cheerlead for fascism now that they think it's targeting the right people, and ignoring that they're getting targeted too.

The fact that we see so many people having regret is a good thing. I’d rather have people that realized they fucked up then people that are doubling down and defending everything Trump is doing.

Again, correct. We'll see if the candidates coming up for 2026 realize how badly they need these disaffected Republicans' votes.

Personally I find it weird we pretend it's even remotely acceptable or fun at any point.

Yeah yeah leopards eating faces is a good source of schadenfreude, but I don't think anyone actually found it humourous and entertaining when these were announced.

It's just the coping mechanism we use over things we don't have control of.

But at least in the countries claiming to be democratic, we really do have an option, it just requires a lot of cooperation. And since we're just doomscrolling I don't think anyone will ever get there.

It's like we're scared of being mocked if we treat anything that's going on in the world as a serious and urgent problem.
