Iran executed at least 1,639 people last year, the highest number recorded there since 1989, two non-governmental organisations say.

The total represents an increase of 68% compared to 2024, when 975 executions were recorded, according to a report by Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) and Paris-based Together Against the Death Penalty (EPCM).

Most of those hanged were convicted of drug-related offences or murder, they say. But at least 57 were convicted of security-related charges, including two protesters.

The NGOs warn that Iranian authorities could use executions even more extensively this year in the wake of January's protests and the war against the US and Israel.

My hope is for Iran to return to a time before the US got involved with it at all. Pictures from the 60s show an incredible country and people, but over time, Western manipulation drove them back to religious suppression and anger at the world.

Sadly, I think it was the time where France and UK used the shah as a puppet. Not the US but not really better though (the shas was not an angel either) if I remember a video of the youtube channel Histoire crêpues (french decolonial media)

Yeah. I believe it was under the sha. Which was problematic in its own right. Even if it was more identifiable to the west. No returning to X nostalgic time. Just moving ahead, abolishing those that would oppress. Empowering individuals to govern themselves.
