There are admins/mods on the fediverse, even on Lemmy specifically, who do monitor voting actions and may respond with punitive actions such as bans.
See dubvee.org. They are like the ban equivalent of the Mormon church’s genealogy records.
But they don't just auto-ban you for mentioning a Nintendo character
.world wanted to with Luigi. The admins wanted to crack down on it but the users said no.
That's how I got banned. It was either that or I upvoted the wrong post or maybe posted a reply with an "Eat the rich" gif.
I mean if you want to move the goalposts to mean that specifically, then sure, to my knowledge you’d be correct so far. Doesn’t mean the medium is categorically immune from that happening though.
The fediverse is fundamentally more resistant to that type of shit tho, cuz mods and even instance owners can’t piss off too many users without the community migrating elsewhere. The split in the memes community between .ml and .world is a perfect example
