They have to. Their world view is so fragile that accepting they're wrong about even the smallest thing risks shattering the whole.

So I am someone who used to get defensive when I was wrong about something, until I heard a great trick. Think of being corrected as knowing the truth, then spin it in your head that now that you know the truth you are now right. It's selfish as hell, but it works for me. Less defensiveness, less arguing, better mentality.
