Europeans should be self aware enough to recognize that the most devastating criticism of Trump are direct comparisons to historic European tyrants. And forget about Hitler or Mussolini. Donald Trump at his worst can't even measure up to Leopold II.
That is an insane argument. You are saying anybody whose country went through a genocidal dictator can't criticize Trump because he's not as bad yet? WTF?
Never mind that in those examples that they gave, none of them were elected like Trump was:
Hitler lost the election for president; but was later appointed as chancellor by the guy that won after political pressure;
Mussolini was appointed by the king after threats of paramilitary force;
Leopold II was a hereditary monarch

The problem with that argument, especially on Lemmy, is that... Well actually basically none of us voted for him, thus we didn't elect him, he was just elected by the other people
I would give them a pass to shit on the people here who loudly and proudly scream that they did not vote at all. Depending on the communities that you focus on, you may get the impression that every Amercan on lemmy did not vote, and just want to piss and cry that they did not get the candidate (or communist revolution) that they preferred. Am American and voted for Kamala, not because I actively wanted her, but because you have to be pretty far gone to not be able to see she would have been better on EVERY front, INCULDING PALESTINE!

Idk if we can call first past the post, winner take all, electoral college, elections as comparable to most European elections. If anything, the US president is lawfully closer to a king than many modern democracies.
As a Brit I fucking hate the royal family and their soft power and their wealth, but I'd argue that Trump has more of both and is heading for more than a royal has had in a Western country in living memory.

My preferred comparison is to Napoleon III. It's not a perfect match, but provides a lot of comparisons: the attack on freedoms, the incompetent political appointees, the unwise foreign wars, the puffed-up overconfidence and the sheer mediocrity...
