If there's one thing Japan loves, it is economical competition. There are like 40 different ways to pay at a shop, it's absurd.

That Q+ looking one near the bottom left is how Apple Pay came to be in Japan.

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 18 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Wow, all of that and no crypto. That's impressive.

Japan is permanently in the '90s (and I love it).

[–] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 23 points 8 hours ago

I've seen the phrase "Japan has been stuck in the year 2000 since 1980"

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 33 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

That's not absurd, that's awesome

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 4 points 9 hours ago

It can be both!

Is there some science to what facilitates common standards vs. dotzens of islands? Convenience of the user is only one factor (if at all), see printers.

And yet everyone will pay with cash.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 12 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

This used to be the case 15 years ago, but unless you go to some tiny independently owned place, you can usually pay with credit card or suica. If not, then with one of those QR code payment options. I rarely carry cash anymore.

Idk, I wasn't there myself. My friend went there multiple times though (last time before corona) and he said cash was often/usually needed.

I can’t pay with interpretive dance?! I shall not be frequenting this establishment. Good day to you.

[–] SnortsGarlicPowder@lemmy.zip 8 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

There is a DDR cabinet in the arcade that will turn your Dance into Tickets which are accepted.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 6 points 11 hours ago

This is one of the most Japanese things I have ever heard.

Dōmo arigatōgozaimasu

[–] Matriks404@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

That's hardly a bad thing unless you can't use the most common way (e.g. paying by credit/debit card) in shops.

[–] Sat@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 14 hours ago

If only that worked on dlsite

[–] Toes@ani.social 1 points 11 hours ago

With that many options, it's your bad if the card doesn't work. Wow haha

no klarna...... ABSOLUTE W
