Farmers are holding The Netherlands hostage. They emit too much nitrogen fucking up nature and slowing down houses being build, among other things like messing with our water supplies and poisoning their surroundings.
It has been going on for years and everytime the government plans to do things, they block highways or cities or threaten and intimidate people. Meanwhile most of the livestock they have gets sold to foreign lands for meat and in total it is not even 1% of the total Dutch export. Basically nothing, while costing this country a lot.
Cops don't do anything because the farmers mainly drive their big tractors and for some reason cops are rendered useless then. The farmers dump asbestos on highways or destroy houses or whatever they feel like doing.
Today they are protesting by blocking a highway and already two people died by crashing into them.
They also started wearing a Star of David because they feel like the jews during ww2
That's just fucked. Aren't farmers, like, millionaires these days? I assume it's not the immigrant worker being paid minimum wage in those tractors blocking roads
Most of the owners of farms, so the farmers and their families, are millionaires on paper at least by virtue of owning large plots of lands and lots of assets. They also get subsidized by the state. For decades. And for decades it has been known that nitrogen will be a problem down the road. Now here we are, down the road, and nothing has been done and now after decades of sucking on the welfare udder these land owners are rioting because something HAS to be done now.
The people doing the land work, mostly seasonal migrant workers, are absolutely not millionaires. Though these people also mostly work on fruit and veggie farms which are not the main problem. The biggest polluters are meat and dairy farms.
I live next to a former dairy farm, still growing crops however - and most farmers in Central Europe are definitely “middle class” although the concept of the “comfortable” farmer family is not that rare. They are cultural distinct from “normal” more higher earning folks though.
Kulaks, first as tragedy then as farce (and also still as tragedy).
Say, where can i get relatively good news sources from? I also live in the netherlands, but don't know much of the happenings here.
Mainstream news probably NOS as it is the state news. Regional state news like Omroep Brabant covers provincial news. I'd say for mainstream news they are the most trustworthy at least.
For more investigative or left wing news I'd say stuff like De Marker, Groene Amsterdammer, Left Laser, Linksinhetnieuws (instagram), MiGreat (insta), Follow The Money.
I just came back from living abroad for years so I also have to look for more news sources.
Hell yeah, thank you!
Do they put up yellow crosses in their fields as well?
