MODERATORS
I was a mod for a number of large communities. I contributed thoughtful (and sometimes not so thoughtful) content on a regular basis. When the API debacle happens I and quite a number of long time (15+ years) reddit users quit and haven't returned. I nuked my account then deleted it. Haven't been back since and don't miss it.
I think the results of many long term intelligent content generators leaving at once are pretty self evident.
Reddit got progressively dumber over time, but the drop off that happened in 2023 was just massive. The reposts now come with actual reposted top comments, the fucking bots are locked and loaded and the admins love it or are in on it.
I go back every now and then to see the small subs I used to use. They're all ghost towns with one or two people where there used to be fifty. There were people saying the wrong things in one with no automod killing their bad comment.
Now all the big subs are run by corporate or tame mods.
Reddit became a relied on as a source for information because of the massive amounts of free expertise offered by a small group of experts. The majority of the experts left due to the shenanigans.
On lemmy, it was slow at first. However a small core of experts hung around and started building with the group that was already here. Slowly it started generating a real information hub.
The app builders also took some time to get the new apps fully functional and polished. For example today, Connect is superior in many regards to RiF. It definitely did not start out that way.
