I've met so many people who hate Meatloaf. I think Bat out of Hell is a top 10 album.

His name was Robert Paulson.

[–] BladeFederation@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't hate it, I just don't get it. Rock boomers always ranked it pretty high. The album art looks like the most killer metal album ever. And then I drop the needle for the first time and it's fuckin' showtunes.

[–] gramie@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

That makes sense, because the music is repurposed from a musical that Meat and Steinman were writing.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The songs are good. The person was a POS that I'm glad is gone. Sadly. So many musicians of that era are maga turds.

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Yeah, but I'm talking about the music. If we only listened to music from good people we wouldn't have much to choose from.

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Following that logic, the Harry Potter universe is perfectly acceptable. Just ignore the raging transphobe that is JK.

[–] renormalizer@feddit.org 2 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I'd argue that the difference is that JK is actively using the money she gets for Harry Potter to influence policy and hurt people. I don't remember Meat Loaf doing that...

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 1 points 21 hours ago

So just a little bit of racism and pedophila support is acceptable, as long as their music is decent? Just don’t go full on TERF?

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Well, for one, she's still alive

[–] datavoid@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Back when I was a wedding DJ, I'd queue up Meatloaf when I had to take a shit

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip -4 points 1 day ago

Makes sense, his songs are pretty long.

Well, I don't know about acclaimed, but he did some acting. I liked him in Black Dog, but I think he wasn't really acting in that one.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think I only really know two Meatloaf songs, and I'm not particularly fond of either of them.

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip -4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Oh, well because you know two songs I guess I'm just wrong.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That was a really strange way to interpret my comment. Sorry for trying to participate in the conversation.

[–] PlasticExistence@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Honestly, what were you thinking?

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Meatloaf was a terrible human being, it's hard to ignore that and like his music. I used to like that album before I knew though.

[–] Denjin@feddit.uk 3 points 2 days ago

I don't think being pro-Trump and then realising he was a sack of shit and then becoming anti-Trump necessarily counts as being a terrible human being.

His only other controversial stuff seems to be being a climate change denier and anti-vaxxer but I put that down to stupidity over any malice on his part.

Plus you can argue that Jim Steinman was a bigger part of Loafs music than Loaf himself.

[–] DrBob@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

What? What did the 'loaf do to anyone?

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip -4 points 2 days ago

The amount of Rock stars that aren't terrible humans probably wouldn't fill two hands.
