Read the book not realizing the film satirizes the book and kept waiting for some kind of punchline. Finished thinking "wait, the author was serious?"

Not exactly. It was supposed to be a cautionary tale, a sort of instruction manual on what to look for.

Fwiw, he likes the movie more.

Who likes the movie more? Robert Heinlein died 9 years before the Starship Troopers movie came out.
