One day Trump will be gone, but the millions of fascists he empowered will still be spreading their poison, committing acts of terrorism, and doing everything in their power to destroy secular democracy and equality wherever they can.

This is a cancer we will need to eliminate using only methods our current constitution doesn't allow. America needs a world class denazification. These monsters need to feel existential dread for ever externalizing their fascism, as a matter of law. Peace, prosperity and a civil society simply cannot exist with these people in it and free.

I wholeheartedly agree, but I don’t think this country is capable. You call out anyone for their hateful thetoric and you are accused of being the one who is out of line. Americans are so unbelievably afraid of any confrontation or pushback that we will defend the evil asshole’s right to be an evil asshole, but never their target.

We had our chance in the 1930s and 40s. We failed back then. And with things even more stacked now there's no chance. I'd like to be surprised. But everyone is still sleepwalking to be sure.

I may be misremembering, but wasn't the general American population around the 1940s in favor of Nazism, until Pearl Harbor at least?

Much of Europe was actually, antisemitism has always been strong across western European countries like France, Spain, and (at the time it was still considered one) the UK. And appeasement was an appealing option that most countries were in support of right up until the moment that the Nazis were in their borders blowing things up. The idea that the Allies had always opposed Nazi Germany - and especially that they did so for moral and ethical reasons - is one of the biggest white washing propaganda programs in modern history.

America holds the special distinction of being the only country besides Germany to hold a Nazi convention, though, and we did almost join the war on their side a couple of times while we were also funneling money and arms to various other nations in Europe.

A decent portion of it yes. Several ships of Jewish refugees turned away. There was even a plot to install their own authoritarian furer by deposing FDR. Unfortunately a lot of the details were lost to history due to FDR's wheeling and dealing. Blackmailing the guilty parties in Congress to pass the new deal. But look up the business plot. The lot of them should have been publicly hung.

There was almost a full on racist coup led by the owners of JP Morgan, DuPont and others.

we are watching thr pardox of in tolerance writ large, if you tolerate intolerance... you get the US.

And Germany. And many other countries. The right is winning everywhere. The reality is people are upset and they think rightwing politics will solve it cause it gives them someone to blame.

[–] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is correct.

The fact of the matter is capitalism has failed as was inevitable. Its now been proven that capitalism, even with socialist elements mixed in, simply does not work. Some of the best countries in the world, such as Sweden, now experience the rise of the far right.

The only solution is to abandon capitalism entirely.

Sexism and racism are the actual problem, it's the manufactured fear reaction to non-white, non-male ascendancy in politics now that people of color and women ARE becoming economically and politically successful. Most of the liberal democracies in the west were okay with immigration and equality UNTIL those who benefitted from reachng for it started to threaten the idea of the ruling white male paradigm.

Thing is the fear reaction always rises up, becomes malignant to the right and implodes it. Seen this one play out countless times in ways large and small for well over 5 decades.

I've been saying this for at least 2 years now, I've gotten banned and barred from many social gatherings because of it. It was still worth it. It's clear what we must do.

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

That is going to have to be doubly true for all the collaborators in the Democratic party who got us here or the problem will never be truly solved

Are you a murderer?

If so, good news! Sort of.

I mean basically this, entirely unironically.

We couldn't unracist the South.

So, we just have a happy little national divorce, and petition to join Canada, and then also the EU.

Or, form Super-Cascadia, New New England, and The Peoples Republic of Midwestistan.

Texas can annex Oklahoma, everything touching Utah becomes ~~Greater Mormozonia~~ Deseret and the rest can be the Confederacy 2.0.

(Sorry non included red mountain west / central states, you're destined to be failed states due to climate change and depopulation, so you don't get a name... ok, fine: Unorganized Territories)

Then the Chinese do a CIA and send tons of QBZ 192s and such to the 100% guaranteed resistance movements that'll spring up in Jesusland, and maybe if we're lucky, by 2150, we'll have a saying that goes something like "America, once divided must unite; America, once united, must separate."

[–] hoppeduponcoffee@lemmy.zip 2 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

We can unracist the south, we just have to stop being nice and tolerant. It requires hunting down hate groups, silencing hate speech and destroying cultural iconography that supports hate. Like making it a minor crime to fly a confederate flag or organize a hate group.

This is what the reconstruction was supposed to accomplish, but it failed.

The paradox of tolerance - you must not tolerate the intolerant to preserve tolerance.

[–] compostgoblin@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If you’re gonna do all that, Blue North may as well just annex Alaska for the sake of contiguity.
