is the car even illegally parked? no painted curb or signs in sight, and the car doesn't seem to be overlapping with the hydrant at all.

Anything within 15ft is illegally parked

That'll depend on where you live. Without painted curbs I'd rely on the physical indicators. In this case the bollards in front of it. Car is outside the shown limits so I'm guessing this is legally parked and they just wanted a video.

Absolutely 100% not legally parked. Whether curbs are marked or not, you can't park that close to a hydrant. 15ft is usually the standard minimum across the US.

usually

Well there's your problem, your country doesn't standardise shit well enough.

And there should still be indicators even if the rule is 15 feet. Someone from another state or country might not know, but a yellow line is a very clear indication.

I only said usually because I don't live everywhere. Every state/major city I looked up mentioned 15ft. Also, how about just not being an ass and don't park ANYWHERE near a hydrant, law or not.

[–] shweddy@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

The bollards aren't marking anything theyre protecting the hydrant from cars

Seems like painting the curb would be an obvious move from a city planning perspective.

Painted curbs don’t last where it snows. Plows fuck em right up, so why waste the money.

They just get repainted after a few years. No biggie.

Anything within a certain distance of a fire hydrant is a no parking zone. I'm not sure if this differs at all in distance by jurisdiction (since every state has separate licensing). There are sometimes also signs on poles that explicitly say this.
