Those hoses can't be bent because of the water flow.

It kind of looks like they bent the hose more to bring it through the window...

[–] EpeeGnome@feddit.online 80 points 1 month ago

Yeah, some fire departments are known for doing this. It's not about a shorter route for the hose, it's about sending a message.

[–] v3ritas@infosec.pub 61 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, definitely seems like that took more effort than the problem.

[–] Master@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 weeks ago

They should have done the right thing and gone around to get it set up asap... The beat the shit out of his car.

[–] Nollij@sopuli.xyz 35 points 1 month ago

Yeah, it definitely would've been a more direct route draped across the hood.

[–] charokol@lemmy.zip 32 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I wonder why the video cut off just before they turned it on…

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 weeks ago

Probably because this made the hose kink and they had to disconnect it all and run it over the car instead while the people inside the building suffocated to death.

[–] socsa@piefed.social 3 points 1 month ago

Agreed. They didn't have to do that but I'm glad they did.

[–] TheOriginalMattman@lemmy.world 105 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Just like everything else in America. Performative, over the top and slow.

That hose would have been straighter going over the car.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Wouldn’t the glass cut up the hose, too?

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Car glass is tempered, so probably not

[–] douglasg14b@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago

What you see there is not tempered glass. That is laminated glass. This is clearly evident in the video.

He wasn't the only one doing things and in no way slowed down the whole procedure. There are many steps involved in getting water going and connecting the hose is merely one step. They also don't need the hose from a hydrant hooked up to spray what's already in the tank unless they showed up empty.

[–] this_jury_is_hung@lemmy.world 13 points 4 weeks ago (3 children)

The amount of water in a tank is a fraction of what is needed to tackle a major fire. You've got about 3 minutes worth with a branch open at full flow.

Because of that limitation, you also aren't going to start an internal attack until you have a reticulated supply established, since running out of water while inside a building is a potential death sentence.

If I were in the same position I would have simply run my feeder run around or over the car rather than messing about like this guy.

This guy fights fires.

I think...sounds credible.

Of course they can be bent. Also how fucking slow are they working. We measure this in seconds, not minutes. The tank in the engine is limited and ideally you try to run multiple hoses at once. And sneakers and shorts? Firefighters in the US are weird.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 19 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Could be a volunteer brigade. I've never seen anything like this, firefighters here are kitted the fuck out

[–] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.org 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

They have the NYC FD emblem, which is s full-service FD

They should get their overwidth truck privileges revoked, it kills good urbanism when they can't reach a one-way or bike-only street. Bike paths are actually a common way for emergency services in non-American cities to bypass traffic jams, a well-known problem in NYC. Well, the mandated and enforced Rettungsgasse too, but standalone bike paths are wide enough for police, ambulaces and fire trucks to reach car-free spaces.

He wasted about two minutes in an emergency to do this. The guy illegally parked there, let the law enforcement handle it and do your job. He could have hooked it up and went literally any direction he wanted to without potentially damaging the hose on broken glass and wasting time doing so.

[–] exaybachae@startrek.website 29 points 4 weeks ago (5 children)

They do this all the time just to be dicks... It would've been safer and faster to just run it over the car ... And this video should prove these specific individuals as liable for the damages.

is the car even illegally parked? no painted curb or signs in sight, and the car doesn't seem to be overlapping with the hydrant at all.

[–] shweddy@lemmy.world 27 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Anything within 15ft is illegally parked

[–] MrQuallzin@pie.eyeofthestorm.place 16 points 1 month ago (2 children)

That'll depend on where you live. Without painted curbs I'd rely on the physical indicators. In this case the bollards in front of it. Car is outside the shown limits so I'm guessing this is legally parked and they just wanted a video.

[–] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Absolutely 100% not legally parked. Whether curbs are marked or not, you can't park that close to a hydrant. 15ft is usually the standard minimum across the US.

[–] boonhet@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

usually

Well there's your problem, your country doesn't standardise shit well enough.

And there should still be indicators even if the rule is 15 feet. Someone from another state or country might not know, but a yellow line is a very clear indication.

The bollards aren't marking anything theyre protecting the hydrant from cars

[–] binarytobis@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Seems like painting the curb would be an obvious move from a city planning perspective.

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Painted curbs don’t last where it snows. Plows fuck em right up, so why waste the money.

[–] boonhet@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 weeks ago

They just get repainted after a few years. No biggie.

This looked like more work than just running the hose over the car. Seems like "everyone here sucks" type of situation.

this happens all the time. I saw it in the 90s doing ride-alongs with med-star (ambulance company). it's gonna dump a lot of water into the vehicle, too, because hoses get use, worn and leak. And every time I see it I feel a little bit of joy in my heart because fuck you, stop blocking hydrants you ghouls.

[–] nibbler@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 4 weeks ago (6 children)

yea, totally blocked this hydrant. like... not at all as evident in the video.

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

there's always some assholes who think the rules shouldn't apply to them. here we are.

its a well known thing with people parking in hydrant spots.

[–] foofiepie@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I’ve seen a car being towed/dragged out of an alley it was double parked in, so the fire brigade could gain access. They did NOT care how damaged it was in the process.

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 weeks ago

That seems like a legitimate reason to do so. There seemed to be absolutely no reason to do this in this specific situation though as it didn't accomplish anything and actually made the angle of the hose much worse than it would have been using literally any other solution.

[–] pr0xy_prime@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

Figures he's a career engine man through and through. Doesn't know how to take care windows for shit 🤣

[–] Fredselfish@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 month ago

They did this in the movie Backdraft. Saw it as a kid in theaters. Ask my step dad about it, and he said damn straight you park in front of hydrate then they swill do this.

[–] douglasg14b@lemmy.world 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Are those laminated side windows?

Oof.

I guess in a situation where you need to break your side window to get out, you're just fucked then, huh?

[–] boonhet@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (2 children)

They're pretty common in high end cars and even well equipped midrange cars, AFAIK not that hard to break if you know what you're doing

[–] sukhmel@programming.dev 7 points 4 weeks ago

As passengers usually do?

[–] foofiepie@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

This is why we have one of those reusable spring-loaded belt cutter / window breakers in the centre console.

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 3 points 1 month ago

Has no one seen Backdraft?

[–] drolex@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 month ago

No warning lights on the car parked in an illegal spot? What an amateur

I hope the firefighter enjoyed doing that as much I enjoyed watching it
