...Why tho? Are people worried about legitimately useful models getting banned? Because this feels to me like an attempt to preserve models that do explicitly unethical things.
Unethical uses are legitimate.
It's your computer. It should do what it's told.
It's because Nvidia bought huggingface, and everyone expects them to start deleting anything unprofitable, not just potentially objectionable.
Those are the same thing to them...
If "unethical" means "things Nvidia doesn't want you to do", then yes.
the trend is currently that oen weight models are going proprietary as they are trying to find methods of making money, so capturing what exists of them might make the last one before they go closed still feasible to retrieve.
You mean like anything that goes against pro-corprate neoliberal values? It should be. We should fight to preserve models like that the same way we fight to have spaces to stay that stuff ourselves.

I acknowledge that people misusing LLMs is an issue but I'm not going to be okay with using "think of the children" the same lame excuse lawmakers are trying to use to destroy freedom online to excuse giving corporations the power to decide that we can't say anything that goes against their corporate values on Chatbots running on our computers. They absolutely abuse that agency when they are given it. Some take it as far as saying you can't swear.
Right now it's a choice between that and using unfiltered models while using your own rational judgement.
Those go against pro-corporate values (at least the ones that they outwardly want to show). Currently your only choice are let the corporations pick what is acceptable for you, or have an anything goes model and take responsibility for yourself.

And other really slimy things that they will absolutely put into filters designed to be not removable by the user. If this is what ethics means these days, it's probably better to be unethical.
Because both major GPU manufacturers are controlled by the same family. The primary model repo is controlled by that same family now. Both major pipelines are controlled by that same family. ONNX and the diffusion pipelines are maintained by Microsoft. The alternatives are controlled by hyperscalers (with the exception of civitai I guess). All frontier model pipelines are directly controlled by a single family in China. So its very much possible that you could be banned from accessing them yes. We really don't need a pirate instance we just need AN instance at this point.
TIL that the CEOs of AMD and Nvidia are first cousins once removed.
You don't even need an account to grab from HF. And ironically, the only people who sometimes need mirrors are Chinese users.
