I don’t have $50,000 to drop on solar, byd and bice either.
I just got a 2023 id.4 for 20k, and I charge off the grid.
Right.... I drive a 20 year old Toyota Yaris that gets 40mpg, and i drive like 30 miles a week max, more like 15. It cost me $5,000 3 years ago and i pray every day it last another 3 years. Theres absolutely no cost savings for me dropping $20k on an EV to save 50-75 gallons of gas a year. I dropped $10-12,000 on solar to save $4,000 a year on power and heating. One of these is a good use of money one of them is virtue signaling...

I got a 2007 A6 Allroad Quattro for 1.8k. Let me know when I can get an EV for that price, with highway cruising range (I get about 1000 km on a tank but I'd find 400-500 acceptable on an EV).
So far the closest and most tempting are old Tesla Model S, which I could get for 15k, but I'm not a fan of touchscreens, I prefer a proper interior. And not sure I should give money to someone who bought a car off Elon Musk and will likely do it again. Runner up is Jaguar I Pace which is super cheap because... Jaguar decided to pretend its old lineup doesn't exist and is discontinuing parts production.
Even then, being able to charge at home is incredibly privileged. Not everyone lives in a single-family home. I do, but if I didn't, charging would cost as much as fuel before the Iran war.
Just because you can't do it doesn't make it a bad decision
Yeah, the 200% charge and extra 10-20k to get it insurable is a no from me.
Solar roof would be sick though.
Yea i started planning one out this spring and opted for DIY. its still expensive as fuck and i hate myself for taking on the project. But i also cant afford to heat my house with kerosene anymore so something had to break. it was my back and my bank they broke. Not to mention Tariff King bumped the prices up on everything 50% or more. It's worth the peace of mind, but its honestly a 10k adventure.

It's pretty common in the North. Older houses built in the 40s thru 60s that have never been fully renovated. Furnaces are surprisingly resilient
The furnaces are awesome, I'm keeping mine for a back up unit. In the more brutal storms and dark winters the solar and the heat pumps start struggling. I imagine i'll still get some use out of the Old Beast.
A lot of homes in the North still use it.
A lot of fuels are in use for residential heating in america, and the fuel of choice is usually regional. Example
I bought the place from an 80 year old lady who had weird imitation kerosene lantern lighting from the 1980s, and I have Amish down the road. We do be trying to pretend its 1904 around here as much as possible.
I live in a mobile home in rural maine. Most of rural maine heats with regular heating oil, but if you have to keep your oil tanks outside in the winter, the oil will freeze so you need to pay extra for Kerosene. It's a poor tax!
