Rules:

  1. The mods are fallible; if you've been banned or had a post/comment removed, please appeal.
  2. Off-topic posts will be removed. If you don't know what "Leopards ate my Face" is, try reading this post.
  3. If the reason your post meets Rule 1 isn't in the source, you must add a source in the post body (not the comments) to explain this. If the reason is in the source but is tedious to find (e.g. in a lengthy video), you must add an explanation for where it is.
  4. Posts should use high-quality sources (for a rough idea, check out this list), and posts should retain the title (if one exists) from works like news articles, videos, etc. You may (but need not) edit your post if the source changes the title. (If you're only using an excerpt from an article that's otherwise not about LAMF, you can use the quote in the title.) Other types of posts should have a title which accurately, relatively neutrally describes their contents.
  5. For accessibility reasons, an image of text must either have alt text or a transcription in the post body.
  6. Reposts within 1 year or the Top 100 of all time are subject to removal. Within moderator discretion, this doesn't just include reposts of the exact same media but also includes e.g. a secondary source telling basically the exact same story as another that was already posted.
  7. This is not exclusively a US politics community. You're encouraged to post stories about anyone from any place in the world at any point in history as long as you meet the other rules.

Canadian farmer Arend Feenstra, who moved to Russia through a streamlined immigration program for citizens of “unfriendly” countries who share “traditional values,” has complained that he cannot get a permanent residence permit. The news outlet Nizhny Novgorod Onlain drew attention to his YouTube video.

Feenstra received a three-year temporary residence permit in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region in early 2025. He then brought his wife and eight children to Russia and began farming.

But Feenstra has now learned that to replace his temporary residence permit with a permanent one, he must sign a contract with Russia’s Defense Ministry.

Yes, that famous Holocaust slogan: "Glory to Ukraine"

And that famous Nazi running Ukraine, the Jewish man Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Yes, that famous Holocaust slogan: “Glory to Ukraine”

Yes? The phrase originated with the OUN and denying the OUN's involvement in the Holocaust is straight up Holocaust denial. Which is why Ukraine's ambassador to Germany was forced to resign, after he violated German law regarding Holocaust denial by doing exactly that on live TV.

[–] CharlesDarwin1809@piefed.world 0 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Of course. Every Ukrainian who wishes well for their nation must be a Holocaust-denying Nazi. While every Russian who wishes well for their nation is a proud, patriotic, moral warrior against the heinous and barbaric West.

Just for the avoidance of doubt for anybody who reads this: /s

There are ways to wish well for your country that don't have that history.

[–] CharlesDarwin1809@piefed.world 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Surely context matters. For example, one of the flags of where I live, the English flag, has been used to essentially express support for a more restrictive immigration policy

Whereas football fans will use that same flag with a completely different intended meaning - they just want to express support for the England football team

Sure, context matters. For example, if they used that slogan while throwing up statues of Stepan Bandera everywhere and celebrating him, that context would indicate that they're intentionally using the slogan because they're proud of him and the things he did, and want to associate themselves with him. If they used the slogan while acknowledging his involvement in the Holocaust and criticizing him, it would likely indicate that they're separating it from its original context.

Where I grew up, some people like to say, "The South will rise again." Some people claim it's harmless, that it's just about the South "rising" in the sense of developing and becoming prosperous. But generally, it's understood to mean the South rising up in rebellion. And you can tell that's what it means by the fact that it's generally said by people who wave Confederate flags, get Confederate tattoos, downplay the crimes and atrocities of the Confederacy, etc.

And the fact that this strain of far-right nationalism is prominent in Ukraine was documented by Western news media such as Reuters and The Guardian, until the war started and those stories suddenly became "Russian propaganda."

I want you to follow me on a hypothetical. Suppose you suddenly found yourself in 1981, in the middle of a TV debate about the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Of course, being from the future, you know that the groups the US is arming and supporting are the same mujahideen who will attack the WTC in 20 years. You have the possibility to prevent that, and the 20 year war in Afghanistan that got countless people killed, if you can just convince the people of 1981 that the mujahideen are dangerous and that we shouldn't be arming and training them.

What do you say? The moment you suggest that, they accuse you of supporting the Soviets, of trying to undermine US interests, of repeating communist propaganda, of just letting the Soviets do whatever they please, and they won't stop at Afghanistan. Of everything you say to and about me now.

Whatever you would say to them, you can just imagine I said it to you. And while I'm not from the future, I do have basic pattern recognition, and the fact is that arming dubious, right-wing groups has not really worked out super well for us historically.

You seem to think it's funny, but it is true. You also seem to have zero context for something you feel so strongly about. The OUN were so eager to exterminate minorities that even the Nazis had to reign them in for going "too far".

Now the Banderite controlled government erects statues to Stepan Bandera, names streets after him, makes school children sing songs about him.

Zelensky campaigned and won on the promise of peace through the Minsk Agreement, and watched helplessly as the Azov Brigade refused his orders to stop shelling civilians in the Donetsk city center.

Zelensky is now just a kapo stooge who will never outlive his usefulness to these fascists.

There's enough of this bollocks coming out of the Kremlin so I don't know why you feel the need to generate more of it

[–] LocalAreaMan@lemmy.world 0 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I didn't generate it, Victoria Nuland did.

Use your words. 🙉🙊🙈

[–] CharlesDarwin1809@piefed.world 0 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

You didn't mention cookies like your Kremlin handlers told you to

You'll get fined a few rubles for that mistake

[–] LocalAreaMan@lemmy.world 0 points 15 hours ago

Earnest question. You're commenting on other threads talking about how great Zohran Mamdani is. He totally is. 👍 Agreed.

So what gives? You're only NIMBY about fascism? It's bad for us, but good for our "allies" and "enemies"?

Maidan made Jan6 look like a cosplay convention in comparison.

Why the disconnect? Is it borne out of your own sense of nationalism? What's bad for them is good for us?

I'm genuinely curious.

[–] LocalAreaMan@lemmy.world 0 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (1 children)

First it was cookies. Then it was artillery shells.

Can you explain why Democratic and Republican leaders appeared on the Maidan stage with Oleh Tyahnybok, the leader of Svoboda? It's a fascist party that led the coup.

Am I making that up? Am I?

Just let people vote and respect their decisions. What's so hard about that?

[–] CharlesDarwin1809@piefed.world 0 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Just let people vote and respect their decisions. What’s so hard about that?

Ukraine's parliament voted to remove Yanukovych

The Ukrainian people elected Zelenskyy

You need to let people vote and respect their decisions

[–] LocalAreaMan@lemmy.world 0 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Bullshit. There weren't enough representatives per the constitution because a Nazi mob removed THEM, those that did not already flee.

Zelesnky won on the promise of ending the conflict through the Minsk Agreement, a popular rejection of the Banderites and a mandate for peace, then watched helplessly as the Azov Brigade refused his orders to stop shelling the Donetsk city center.

Now he's just a kapo stooge who will never outlive his usefulness to the Banderites.

A Jewish man "guarded" by men with Totenkopfs???

You're very confident in something you clearly don't understand. You just need to be pointed at whomever they tell you your enemy is, huh?

Chump.🤡

[–] CharlesDarwin1809@piefed.world 0 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Blah blah blah Kremlin-funded bullshit blah blah blah

You're an idiot

[–] LocalAreaMan@lemmy.world 0 points 1 hour ago

Use your words if you're so smart.
