Excerpt of the executive order https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2026/09/inaugurating-the-era-of-super-intelligence/ from last week:

The terminology used by the Federal Government should reflect the transformative capabilities of these technologies and the limitless opportunities they create for the American people. Accordingly, the term “Super Intelligence” more appropriately captures the promise, potential, and rapidly advancing capabilities of these technologies. It is therefore the policy of my Administration that, to the maximum extent permitted by law, the executive branch shall use the terms “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” and will not acknowledge the usage of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in any applicable setting.

People have loved to accuse the government of 1984-like behavior since the book first came out, but for real, this is actual 1984 shit.

Yeah this is one of the few times you can call something Orwellian with a lot of accuracy.

A shame his name got associated with a particular kind of totalitarian dystopia in my opinion, as he was a pretty interesting character in general. He definitely put his money where his mouth was, going to Spain to fight fascism and getting shot and nearly killed for his troubles. The term only really came into use after he died (a few years after the book was published) but I can't help thinking he'd not have appreciated becoming a byword for the totalitarianism he spent his life opposing from the left. He certainly didn't appreciate the book being used in the US to denounce socialism!
