Yeah this is one of the few times you can call something Orwellian with a lot of accuracy.
A shame his name got associated with a particular kind of totalitarian dystopia in my opinion, as he was a pretty interesting character in general. He definitely put his money where his mouth was, going to Spain to fight fascism and getting shot and nearly killed for his troubles. The term only really came into use after he died (a few years after the book was published) but I can't help thinking he'd not have appreciated becoming a byword for the totalitarianism he spent his life opposing from the left. He certainly didn't appreciate the book being used in the US to denounce socialism!
