I would suggest, unsolicited as it is, to visit some place in the world, and leave the internet behind for a couple of weeks.
They’re bringing books, not the internet. Some people enjoy reading books in their spare time.
Books? I am unfamiliar with that term.
I am reading Nobel House, part of the Asian Saga of my man, James Clavell. Nah de leh moh all government. (Fuck the mother of... in Cantonese, no one can swear like the cantonese.)
Terry Pratchett currently. Just finished The Rose Field by Philip Pullman. Love the series, the ending was great. Took an anti-capitalist turn I didn’t expect.
I have been doing some history, including this book from 1905 or something, they are shorts, 40 pages or so each, this Russian one I read, authored in part by Tolstoy if I recall, was just sad, talking about the "Russian Revolution" of like 1905 or something.
It was something, labour unrest that spread, the tsar tried to violently quash it as they were wont to do, and it made the protests spread further. The Tsar eventually agreed to a constitutional monarchy and all that, but then the new duma angered him right off and he had them sent to the gulag and death. But then had to reinstitute it at some point.
The authors were all hopeful for Russia's future and shit, just sad, given a couple years later WWI tore them up.
Man that must be depressing to read. :(
Thing is, to get to the place that I’m visiting, I have 20+ hours of flying each way, and a months worth of reading in bed to do when I’m there. If I took enough books to keep me occupied, I’d need to pay for extra baggage
James Clavell is great for historical fiction. I would skip Shogun to start, and start with Tai Pan.
Anna's archive is a cheaper thrill that enables one to join the long tradition of being pseudo-cosmopolitan through reading
Sure. OP made it sound like they have a job that gives 2 weeks paid vacation, and if that's the case, go somewhere cool. If you are not in that position, yes, what you say.
