Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

I am entirely convinced nothing bad will happen if you don’t pre-click the clackers.
You're convinced? So you haven't actually confirmed it? Still can't resist the test clack even with this hypothesis?
And potentially have my penis fly off? I don't think so!
Sorry, no. Non-clickertation of the clackers is one of the leading causes of early clackers declickeration. Clickeration of the clackers warns of problems early, when maintenance can be applied to the clackers before ongoing misaligned clickeration can have catastrophic effects on your clackers. Remember the old saying: Nine clicks is a fine thing.
The click is not for the clacker, it is for the cook.
Not prepared to take that chance…
Every power tool I pick up has a quick vroom-vroom before I use it properly, just like the tongs. It’s tradition.
Gotta confirm that the battery is charged and/or that it's properly plugged in and powered before you go to use it and then look like an idiot when it does nothing.
I do that with all the power tools too! One time I did that with my circular saw and it made a rattling noise, the blade was starting to come loose and needed tightened. A couple of times I've somehow just completely forgotten to tighten drill bits and found out during the pre-use vroom. So I think it legitimately helps get a quick safety gauge before diving into using something
Agreed. Also, I switch it from reverse to forward every time after use even if I have more screws to unscrew.
The test clicks are so you get an accurate feel for the spring tension. It's not the end of the world if you don't do it, but you're more likely to drop something.
I'm almost afraid to ask, but what are clackers? All I could find is the 1960's children's toy with two balls on a string. But that can't be it, can it?
I think they're describing the kitchen utensils more commonly known as Tongs.
It's a sign we all yearn to be a crab.
You've clearly never grilled.
