Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
  • 5. 🇬🇧 Language/язык/Sprache
  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. 🇬🇧🇦🇺🇺🇸
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

For those unaware, Linus Torvalds this year has deeply cast his lot with the hyperscale LLMs for development of Linux code, dismissing arguments that this is an abdication of responsibility over that code base.

AI is a quarter as old as electricity at this rate, nothing has changed over the past 5 decades nor will. No one smart is arguing anything otherwise.

LLMs are just an expensive ass marketing campaign covering up the largest scale piracy we've seen since copyright was invented.

So some people want to take ownership of others work and feel entitled cause its way easier than actually paying people for their work, but that concept is older than humanity.

Add in the lack of reliability and its a joke to use AI in anything other than a hobby project (which Linux technically is I guess)

AI still doesn't actually exist. Weird how you claim it's been around fifty years... It hasn't. At all. Ever. That is the ELIZA effect, which is distinctly NOT "AI".

You're still right in that it is effectively a joke being played on the world, though.

Is there a reason you insist on using a different definition than people who actually work in the field and then loudly claim they're the ones using their own terms incorrectly

    [–] spankysalmon@fedinsfw.app 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The professionals use specific terms, like LLM or neural network. Most aren't buffoons suffering from the ELIZA effect.

    [–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They also use "AI" to refer to things more generally when they need to refer to the whole group of technologies. This does not imply they think AI is conscious or whatever; that correlation is entirely a consequence of you using an incorrect definition of AI.

lol no. Sure, THEY know what they're talking about when they say AI, but you have to be such a clown failing to pay attention if you think they're immune to the ELIZA effect or that the execs trying to sell this aren't willingly falling for it. They need it to be more capable than the technology actually is to justify their insane upset of the economy burning trillions on this BS.

I don't consider executives to be professionals or experts in AI in any sense of the words. For engineers, we agree they use AI to refer to the field generally. I don't know why you're bringing up the ELIZA effect, that doesn't really have anything to do with this unless you think AI = conscious or something similar.

Again, this problem only exists because you are redefining AI to mean something that it doesn't. Engineers use it to refer to the field in general, and (usually) don't have any delusions about it meaning the AI is conscious. Executives say whatever they want to get as much money as possible and I don't care how they're using the term. Only you, incongruously using it to mean something beyond what the field is today, are getting confused when engineers use it to refer to the field's current capabilities.

Yes, ‘Artificial Intelligence [AI]’ was literally conjured as a marketing term with the motivation of seeking funding.

Just because there’s a label invoked to encompass an area of research, doesn’t make it legitimate. There’s plenty of pseudoscientific fields that practitioners believe are worthy, like economics or cryptozoology.

    like economics or cryptozoology.

that's really not fair. not every practitioner is from the Austrian School of Cryptids
