Reddit was already a shell of itself before AI. I stuck around too long because I didn't quite like Lemmy when I tried during the API exodus. I eventually left when they started forcing logins. By that time I hadn't realized just how much the community had degraded till I came here.

It's like I forgot what online discourse felt like before corporate tentacles strangled reddit. Even the stupid arguments make more sense, and that seems impossible.

True. For me, the quality there pretty much degraded around 2015-6 or at least that was when i started to notice the increase of bot use and such, but some would say it was even before that when one of its founder died. Even after that period it was still tolerable compared to what we have now.

Agreed. The run-up to the 2016 election was the writing on the wall for me.

Reddit was already gaining a lot of clout as a public platform. Around that time was when Bannon leveraged reddit influence to drive the Bernie bros and incels to Trump.

I'm guessing that's when the world stage really took notice of reddit as a tool for political influence.

there was quite a few incel subs on reddit. including remember the "the-donald" and others.

[–] cybermonkey@piefed.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yea I do remember the donald, they weren't really incel though, just a political sub if i am not wrong. Incels had their own subs as well that got purged at the time along with many ones as well. What was good about Reddit back then was that the platform allowed freedom to a large extent, didn't bother as long as it wasn't something in your face that violated the rules, either that, or they didn't care back then.

that changed around 2018, when people were getting banned for the slightest inneundos too.

that was the time when trump won the first term, and putin realized reddit among others was a goldmine for his troll bots. and thats when the banning started.

same, after API-drama, noticed a significant amount more warnings and bans from the site, and other have reported the same.

prepping for the ipo is when it really started to go to shit and it's been a non-stop shower since.
