Let's see, Anthropic is about a trillion, OpenAI is about a trillion, AMD is about a trillion, SpaceX and Meta are two trillion each, Amazon is 3, Microsoft is 4, Google is 4, Nvidia is almost 6... So something on the magnitude of a $20 trillion bailout?

The USA budget is only a quarter of that. The entire federal budget.

This is going to be fucked, isn't it?

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

AMD is cash positive. They have 2 billion long term debt but hold 13 billion cash (as of June 2026). Where are your numbers coming from? AMD's market cap isn't even quite a trillion and market cap is just last sale price multiplied by total shares.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

Numbers are from Wikipedia.

It's certainly likely that not all of these companies will need a bailout. AMD and NVIDIA sell products that are generally useful and established, but it's hard to say how much of any of these company's value is tied into AI hysteria or contracts that will fall through when AI customers go belly-up.

Yes, the bailout price is also not the same as valuation. I don't think it's outrageous to think that the coming recession will wipe out $20 trillion from the market, though.

Maybe they can just Klarna it, there’s no interest right?

[–] Dojan@pawb.social 1 points 7 hours ago

lmao, Klarna says that abroad? They've been established here in Sweden for like a decade at this point. Fucking leeches, inserting themselves everywhere. No good tech comes out of Sweden.

[–] Bluewing@lemmy.world 9 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Remember, it will be a mere $10 down and Easy Payments^tm^ of one trillion a year over 20+ years.

[–] anton@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 7 hours ago

At current 20y US Treasury rates, that wouldn't even cover the interest, growing the principle by tens of billions.

[–] Noite_Etion@lemmy.world 21 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

They’d have to incinerate Social Security, defund every school, let infrastructure rot, and hyper-inflate the dollar into worthlessness just to keep Wall Street’s AI bubble afloat... Which is beyond fucked.

Welcome back to life as a peasant.

Don't worry, AI will still be around then to do all the thinking for us! It'll tell us how this was all for the best, and how we should be thankful to our overlords! We'd surely be making the best of a bad situation and not following a plan for this exact thing to happen!

Welcome back to life as a peasant.

Which is sort of what their glimpses of post-AI jobs in the future they could actually substantiate suggest. It's all a big heist from the wealth of the people into the pockets of the wealthiest using the smoke and mirrors of a "democratic" government, fueled by the possibility of them no longer having to placate human societies in any way if AI and robotics becomes advanced enough.
