It's annoying because I've gotten very security-conscious over the last year, but shit like this makes it feel like I can't achieve what I want unless I get rich.

I mean, you can get a refurbished unlocked pixel 8 straight from google for $380 and put grapheme on it... Even less if you buy a used phone or third party refurb.

$380's still a bit steep in my position right now, but I appreciate the ideas. Thank you!

You can get Pixel 6 for 195$ refurbished on Amazon.

Doesn't that reach EOL very soon?

[–] XiJinpingStanAccount@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 days ago

it does yeah but I've got one personally and intend to keep using it regardless.

Buy a second hand or refurb pixel. That's what I did. Google already got paid, sure, but you don't give them anything more. It's not perfect, but it's an economical solution that doesn't break the bank and still gets you security. At this point, if you don't want big tech, may I suggest two tin cans and a string? if you do that, at least Del Monte doesn't get the recycling deposit back on their empty green bean receptacles.

Almost all the other ones are reportedly worse at security than the stock OS, only Graphene is more apparently. At least according to their team, I know they trash Lineage and E a lot.

Try to buy pixel 8 or 9 it's a little cheapest

Honestly right now my heads at riding out the rest of this phone's contract (It was a Galaxy A16 I got for free because I needed desperately off my old, end of life S9) and switching to iPhone, cuz that has almost all the security but none of the breakage of a custom rom.
