Its clear that Democrats are now the center (maybe center-right) party and there is no mainstream liberal party in the US

I think the last one was probably Bill Clinton? Pretty much since 9/11, America has moved towards the right and continues to do so. The Overton window had shifted so much for America over the last few decades.
Clinton was just as much a neoliberal as Reagan. He gets a pass though because was charismatic and was the president during the dot-com boom/bubble.
Clinton kicked off the whole mess with his constant triangulation.
LOL, wut? Bill Clinton said "The era of big government is over." then proceeded with the largest dismantling of the federal welfare state until maybe now.
The last vaguely leftist president was Carter.
