Donald Trump said Tuesday that NATO allies should shoot down Russian aircraft encroaching on their airspace, and walked back earlier support for Russia to keep the Ukrainian territory it has won.

“I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form,” he wrote on social media shortly after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

For months as he tried to coax Russian Vladimir Putin into peace talks, Trump indicated Ukraine needed to be realistic about its long term prospects and military disadvantage, suggesting it would have to give up the land it had already lost in order to end the war.

Crimea? Take it. Tylenol? Don't take it. Or maybe take Tylenol and give Crimea to Putin, there's no downside. But a lot of people are saying that maybe you give Tylenol to Putin and you can take Crimea, how about that? A lot of people are saying.
