Donald Trump said Tuesday that NATO allies should shoot down Russian aircraft encroaching on their airspace, and walked back earlier support for Russia to keep the Ukrainian territory it has won.

“I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form,” he wrote on social media shortly after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

For months as he tried to coax Russian Vladimir Putin into peace talks, Trump indicated Ukraine needed to be realistic about its long term prospects and military disadvantage, suggesting it would have to give up the land it had already lost in order to end the war.

The problem with this? He changed his mind once, he can change it again. Nobody, especially not Ukraine and other former Soviet states, should rely on Trump.

It’s whoever sucked up to him last

He changed his mind once, he can change it again.

I disupte the implication that he has a mind.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 5 days ago

putin must be not talking to him recently if he is allowed to this.

[–] krimson@lemmy.world 30 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Relax boys and girls. Tomorrow he'll say the exact opposite. It is what senile people do.

[–] BreadstickNinja@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Crimea? Take it. Tylenol? Don't take it. Or maybe take Tylenol and give Crimea to Putin, there's no downside. But a lot of people are saying that maybe you give Tylenol to Putin and you can take Crimea, how about that? A lot of people are saying.

It's also what backstabbers do.

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 27 points 6 days ago (4 children)

Can't stand this fucking prick. It's bad enough that he's an immature man-toddler, now he's making me agree with something he said.

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 13 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Thats just because he is now saying what allies should say and think. He doesnt believe it. But he is saying it.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Who knows. He tends to believe the last person he talked to.

Broken clocks are right twice a day and all that. When you say as much utter shit as Trump does, just by sheer chance, some of it might sound somewhat reasonable occasionally.

[–] favoredponcho@lemmy.zip 6 points 6 days ago

I took him how long to come to the place the rest of the west was on the Ukraine War 3 years ago. And why? Because Putin made him look dumb and it hurt his ego. That’s the only reason.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

He's waffled on this back and forth seemingly depending on whether Zelensky or Putin most recently spoke to him. So you won't have to wait long to disagree with him again.

[–] PorradaVFR@lemmy.world 21 points 6 days ago

Don't buy it - his leash will be yanked soon enough.

[–] elbucho@lemmy.world 15 points 6 days ago (2 children)

So wait... does he still think Ukraine started the war? I'm so confused. Did Putin turn him down for a loan or something?

[–] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 17 points 6 days ago

During their last meeting he found out that Putin is bluffing and he has nothing on him related to the Epstein files.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Everyone now knows that he diddles kids. And he's grifted tons of money from the American people. He no longer needs Putin for either money or to keep his Epstein secrets.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 days ago

Talk's cheap, and no talk's cheaper than Trump's.

This could be 1 of 2 things.

Either putin did something donald didn't like and this is payback, or trump is just trying to muddy the waters by saying confusing, controversial shit to keep everyone guessing and mentioning his name.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago

Like he needs a distraction from something that's bothering him.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 5 points 5 days ago

Or he sees Ukraine slowly getting the upper hand and is looking to take credit as the tough guy winning wars.

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I think Putin's hold on Trump was related to the Epstein files or something banal in comparison (the piss video?)

Trump has more or less gotten away with the Epstein scandal, so my theory is Putin no longer has any power over him.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago

It may just be that Trump wants to be like Putin and likes sucking up to dictators.

[–] 46_and_2@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago

Next week, when he talks to Putin, he'll say exactly the opposite. He's just parroting what the last guy he talked to told him.

[–] logicbomb@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Trump changed his mind after a meeting with Zelenskyy. I guess Zelenskyy finally found the right way to bribe Trump.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago

Or maybe he fisted Trump just like Putin does, but has bigger hands. We'll only know when Trump and Puto are dead, and maybe not even then.

[–] Skiluros@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 days ago

Don't really trust Trump. I just hope putin keeps humiliating Trump, I don't think he likes that and this is something the mercurial Trump likely does view in a consistent manner.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago

Note that he left Crimea out of that babble. Not that he wrote it, it was too concise and coherent.

[–] verdi@feddit.org 2 points 6 days ago

Well, he can put yank troops on the ground and reclaim it himself. Ukraine was already strong armed into giving its natural resources to the US, in the most mafia like fashion one must say, time to actually help...

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 days ago

Guess Putin didn't give any candies anymore.
