1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

I found it a great way to learn what the different components are actually for and how they interconnect/interact. But honestly, I would not use it as a daily driver again. I'm tired of fixing everything afer each update.

Went to Fedora, good and stable. Tried some OpenSUSE, nice and European. Settled with MX Linux. Ticked all the boxes, best Linux experience so far.

Mint, Fedora, Pop_OS!.....these are good distros to start on. Some people start and end on these.

CachyOS, Arch, Manjaro......these are not what you throw at a newbie.

I found Cachy to be a nice intro to Arch based distros, things worked well out of the box

I laughed. Then I remembered that my first distro was Slackware.

I would have used Arch as a teenager, at that time I reinstalled DOS/Windows every other month anyways and learned a lot.

Eventually I got fed up with all that and switched to Mint.

I picked Arch as my first distro about a year ago or so. Sure there was some things to learn but Archinstall was a breeze and after that the popularity of the distro means that there's lots of people asking and answering questions online. Also Archwiki is just fantastic. No regrets.

    Trial by fire

I had a little experience with Debian-based stuff on routers and whatnot going in, but when I finally migrated my main PC to linux I went with an Arch-based distro (cachyos) because the documentation on both projects is fantastic. I was able to get everything set up the way I wanted in a couple of days, with only one reinstall along the way lol.

So, where is Dan Hurd going there, and will he find gold again?

    [–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Trick question. He always finds gold.

The thumbnail makes it look like an Amish Raiden from Mortal Kombat really wants me to install Arch.

    Worked out for meπŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

reminds me of the good ole slackware days. i ran a domain off an old 486/dx2 in the 90’s. was a 3 letter domain too. why did 22yo me let that shit expire?!?

To be fair, I did exactly that the first time i went to an Indian restaurant and it was fine. The reported spiciness was why i went though and it was great.

Since archinstall is a thing, arch really isn't that hard to install or use, but these days I favor nixos for the reproducibility.

I've used Arch on and off since around 2006 or so. I've used most distributions, including Gentoo, and in recent years things like Debian and atomic Fedora. I've settled for NixOS now though and I don't see it changing unless a better declarative OS/language comes along (Guix is a good contender with its Scheme).
