A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

Aquariums and fish keeping. Its as complicated as you want it to be from a simple tank and a few fish to a multi tank breeding setup for fish that need very specific requirements. It is one of those hobbies that will make you want more tanks than you have room for, if you get really into it.
Reading (it takes the right book), stargazing, fixing things, breaking things when I thought I was fixing them, hiking, sitting on logs, weed/music, biking, dancing. It's mostly stuff I did or was exposed to when I was young. It's all most average skill levels at best. At some point, I realized my time is limited and it could end any moment. I stopped worrying about being maximally productive and stopped worrying about not maximizing skill/avoiding things I'm not good at. Do whatever brings you joy. I've tried to spend less time bumming on my phone since it's so easy and so empty.
I liquidated my investments years ago for a cash need. It's cool to be part of some money-making scheme, but I'd say in total, I don't miss addiction of checking performance of the rollercoaster through the casino. I felt bad when it was red, felt like I didn't bet enough when it's green. It never actually moves fast. Things improved when I limited myself to checking weekly. On average, the line will go up and to the right. I'll feed index funds eventually again, but for now, I'm just holding in a high yield savings.
My hobby is collecting items for new hobbies, lol. Mostly board games and various arts and crafts (miniature painting, clay sculpting, felting, watercolor, knitting, etc.).
Knitting: I knew a lot of people who did it and I wanted to fit in, plus it was something to do blindly and with my hands.
Mini painting: started from unpainted minis in a board game I bought. I fell out of the habit due to constant blurry vision for a couple years, but now my partner and I have friends who love mini painting so they came over once a month or so and we paint together.
Watercolors: I loved the fun and messy chaos I saw some artists make and wanted to do that. Instead I learned I’m way too much of a “color in the lines” person. But before learning that, I painted a pet portrait for my niece for Christmas and she loved it so much she asked for a new one every year. So a hobby I probably would have totally stopped has continued with at least one painting a year for five years now, and I have to admit I’m pretty good at pet portraits.
Felting: washing my cat’s favorite blanket once produced little felt balls of her fur and one looked like a little creature. I just had to put eyeballs and a tongue on it so I learned the basics of felting.
Clay sculpting: I wanted to make a figure of my then-boyfriend’s favorite LoL character for him. I’ve picked it up again whenever I’ve had a vision but it’s rare.
I had been sort of curious about weightlifting for most of my life. But was kind of intimidated by the prospect. Eventually I set my mind to it and it turns out that learning how to lift a barbell was easier than I imagined. Now I have home powerlifting gym and I've never felt better in my entire life. It's challenging and oh so rewarding, I recommended it to everyone
Drawing, painting, oil painting, and painting outside is my new "try out" hobby.
Playing guitar, cooking and recently started to learn chinese as a challenge to an aging mind.
I’m dying to resume Mandarin lessons in person. I already tried a local college course but it was remote only; I then used a tutoring website with real people in China which was excellent.
The problem for me is I’m already on the computer constantly so trying to pick up such a difficult language all while stuck on the computer was too maddening. I actually live in an area heavily populated with Mandarin speakers but everything I find turns into online classes.

I do martial arts, play (and think about designing) boardgames and ttrpgs, historical reenactment, crafting (mostly sewing and leatherwork but I've been branching out into chainmail), play video games and poi. But all of these come in waves where I'm more active, I don't do everything on a weekly basis. But I still try to remain active in the communities I'm part of. It is a lot, but I've landed more in "I can't stop myself" over "I have to do this".
Just learning how vinyl cutters work. Cricut is the big one, but I picked up a Silhouette Cameo 5 Alpha Plus.
I play megagames! Large scale roleplaying/board game events. Maybe you would enjoy board games, role playing, war games, LARP, etc. Like many people, got into the hobby from one particular YouTube video that blew up: https://youtu.be/hN71v9H_gg8
