I cannot tell you how happy I am I found lemmy

Reddit is pure filth. I was on there for 15 years and to see it die such a horrible, slow death is bittersweet. It's like Twitter after it became X.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 33 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Reddit will die within a few years from now, mostly by design. Spez and co are pulling out all the money they can, then let it rot

Just standard enshittification

[–] Hubi@feddit.org 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It will get worse and worse but the chances of the site dying are pretty slim IMO. The majority of the current user base doesn't even know how good it was way back. They only know the shitty reddit and they still want to spend their time with it.

Like with twitter, reddit has a lot of momentum behind it. I prefer lemmy but certain communities(subreddits) just don't exist on it.

[–] 100_kg_90_de_belin@feddit.it 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'd say that most people I know got on Reddit after the enshittification had already started in earnest.

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Most people on reddit joined after the official app came out. I cannot imagine using that absolute shit heap of an app, let alone reddit in general anymore.

[–] 100_kg_90_de_belin@feddit.it 1 points 1 day ago

I remember having to give up Falcon Pro because of the token cap and witnessing the launch of Reddit's official app: I used to client hop between Relay, Baconreader, Sync and Joey and each one was better than the official app. Richer in features, smoother, user-friendlier (?)

[–] DrivenByAnger@lemmus.org 11 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Good. Banned me for absolutely fucking nothing, too.

[–] cantstopthesignal@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Banned for talking shit about ICE, eat my ass reddit.

Agreed. Got banned for making fun of Republicans in the softest way

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago

AI moderation is overly sensitive, its likely by design because they went public.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Same. All I did was report ads as spam. But apparently that's "report abuse".

Honestly I don't know why they even bother, when dodging reddit bans is the easiest thing in the world to pull off. Just create a new account with a different email address (or don't enter an email at all). Bam, ban dodged.

Props to everybody here who helped to contribute to that drop just a teeny tiny little bit.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 55 points 3 days ago (3 children)

My personal shame is to still google “product” + Reddit every month if so. Nothing compares to Reddit’s comments on recommendations.

[–] NekoKoneko@lemmy.world 64 points 3 days ago (6 children)

It's true, but the value is diminishing. I've tried that and more than once in the past half year, the advice within reddit posts were clearly astroturf AI-generated slop, and some of them were upvoted in similar amounts to apparent real recommendations.

Companies know Reddit is a recommendation hotspot, and stealth advertising is becoming typical business practice.

most of reddit is 50% bots anyways, reddit is cannabilizing itself to stay alive.

[–] Trampampoline@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

I went back about a month ago to delve into a pipetobacco community since there's fuckall on the fediverse for anything even remotely similar, and got bored in half a day, found a UBB board and joined it instead, then I left the reddit account to rot.

[–] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I contributed first by no longer posting there and only rarely lurking on niches that aren't popular here. I am contributing more now that they have blocked old.reddit, because ain't no way I'm even lurking with the new interface.

If you are using Google AI, then an advertizing company is starting to know you way way too much.

Gemini feels 1000x more personalized from old conversations than any other AI. That isn't going to stay in just that chat window.

[–] liking625@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Reddit sucks, form me it was being shadowbanned for no reason (really I didn't troll anyone). I tried asking why (although maybe suspicions that I was trying proton VPN at the time), i followed their procedures, never found out why (no mods that answered to me knew why) or managed to take it off until I said to myself "why bother"? I was there trying to help mostly. So yes, fuck reddit.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

vpn seems to be auto-shadowban, because reddit hates user that uses vpns.

[–] liking625@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Nothing more hateful than shadowbanning, if you block or ban me in any way , be upfront about it and let me know.

I certainly loathed the experience, i will avoid any platform that can use such method

[–] Monument@piefed.world 61 points 3 days ago (5 children)

And with them putting old Reddit behind a login, they’re just losing traffic.
They’re going to start getting really desperate to mine data and drive advertising dollars soon.

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 28 points 3 days ago (5 children)

Sounds like we should get this place ready for another wave of people

[–] Lemmybrewbeer81@reddthat.com 22 points 3 days ago (3 children)

The wave has started. I just moved from there to here, after they enforced ID checks and require email or phone number.

I don't see why Google would renew. The current content is AI slop.

[–] one_old_coder@piefed.social 6 points 2 days ago

Or... why would they renew since they downloaded all the old "useful" content? (and the new content is useless)

It's like downloading a torrent, you may seed a bit, but you would never download it over and over again.

[–] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Have you seen Google's output lately? Their bar is pretty low, I'd say.

I still don't get "Reddit stock". What value does a trumped up BBS offer?

[–] OctopusNemeses@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Have you seen how it is lately? It's a glorified tabloid. It's largely used for pop culture gossip. People know it's slop, and they don't care. They use it anyways.

Reddit is far from the days of being a modernized tech BBS. At least 10 years removed from it. In it's current incarnation it's an interactive daily newspaper with Bat Boy stories on the front cover. That's what they're selling. And it does sell.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago

its also useful as facebook2.0, for disseminating various propaganda.

[–] fodor@lemmy.zip 17 points 2 days ago (2 children)

They pretended that the content was written by humans. And Google needed data upon which to train its AI. I don't think there's any value in that, but if you are an AI investor, you might want to ride your bubble.

The rest of us know that Reddit is full of bots and you shouldn't be training anything on it. But if you're looking at data from three or more years ago, then maybe that's more human written. Of course Reddit and Google deny that bots dominate, but we know they're lying and they're trying to make money off of the bubble anyway, so don't trust them.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago

50% is at least bots, we know from that. it got worst they used AI to ban people.

[–] EliteCloneMike@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They’re surely juicing the numbers that they show investors. It’s all about showing that they are still growing in some way or another. Nothing else matters to them. Much to the detriment of the users. I moved away from Google many many years ago. Have been moving away from Reddit over the past several months as well.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

same method as FB, they pretend there is still engagement, by drumming up interactions.

[–] EliteCloneMike@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yea, like their failed video shorts in an attempt to compete with YouTube (which I also don’t use anymore). Basically they both claim user engagement is the user watches like 10 seconds of a video, which is hard to move away from in that time.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

youtube shorts is just rehaisng tiktok shorts, where they steal the content form. if you arnt following a specific channel, its usual Thirst traps, right wing content, or AI.

"FUCK" see? Still not banned on lemmy

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 18 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

You won't get banned, but Patrick will add you to his list if you scare the normies.

[–] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago

Thr really scary thing is what sick twisted fucks these so-called normies must be.

Good, I got banned for a stupid reason, they need some humble pie

[–] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 20 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (3 children)

I got banned for showing, quote, "extreme indifference" when Kissinger took a dirt nap 😅

They're still a decent enough porn aggregator. Maybe they can get an AI deal out of that.
