Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. 😇 Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. 📽️ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. 📋 Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      ✅ Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. 📬 Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 🖐) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 🖐) will be removed.
  7. 🏴‍☠️ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      Sí, por favor [Spanish/Español]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

[yellow, a finger up, looking smug]
The answer to oppression is NEVER violence
Turn the other cheek
Pacifism always wins
You could earn rights by asking nicely instead

[yellow, proudly showing us a huge book]
Don't believe me?
Open a history book!

[yellow, looking frustrated as they are shuffling through the book's pages]
Ok so…
Uhm…
Not this page…
Wait…
The next one…
Awkward…
Another…
Yeah but…
For sure this time…

[yellow, sweating, protecting their book, a hand raised towards us]
Can you stop looking?
You're being rude
That's my book

Yes, we were trained how to protest wrong on purpose. Ask any product of the public school system about protest and they'll either look at you confused or start babbling on about the most PG version of MLK and/or Gandhi imaginable. Nonviolence only works when it is understood by all parties to be the alternative. Many forms of effective protest have been outlawed and the owners, in a masterstroke, turned much of society's valid anger (along with a great deal of less-than-valid anger) into self oppression with the MAGA movement and similar movements in other countries.

tldr; we're too stupid to save

Case in point

Now name all instances where the violent overthrow of a repressive system did not result in it being replaced by another one.

[–] Dookieman12@piefed.social 4 points 3 months ago

The idea that "only violent regimes overthrow violent regimes" proves OP right.

[–] Maxxie@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 months ago

is this where you say none because all governments are inherently repressive (which is true and based)

It's high time for a riot.

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 6 points 3 months ago

It doesn't have to by killing people violence though. But just going on a parade isn't doing anything on it's own.

It could work to show how much support a movement has, but you need something to follow up if demands are not met and you actually want something to change.

A strike or blockade isn't violent. Non violent also doesn't mean legal. See how many non violent terrorist pensioners the UK is locking up.

The trolls are heavy with this post. "Americans are cowards." "Pick up a gun and fight."

While I see thier points in relation to this post, they rarely look at America tactically. If I wanted to do a violance, I'd need to know the location of my targets, so I look them up, turns out they move from town to town state to state for mettings and things. Now that I know, my options is to go rogue and independent or gather a group. Too many are tired and exsuasted trying to survive. Many are afraid to loose thier job. Many are afraid to loose thier home... So all that's left is lone actors. I personally have a good reason why I'm not attacking, I have a disease that makes doing any significant travel impossible. Once Americans have a garuentee that violance will give them what they want, then, and only then will violence occur. For all our bravado, we are a risk adverse people, surprisingly.

Violence is always the answer. Plus it makes the best airplanes.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 4 points 3 months ago

Violence is not the answer, it is the question and the answer is YES

The State only respects power. If you can show the State that you have more power than the State, you can influence the State.

Power isn't just physical violence. There is:

  • Economic power, which is show cased through boycotts, strikes, and other means
  • Soft power, which is shown through lobbying and other diplomatic means
  • Political power, which is shown through the ballot box
  • Protest power, which is shown through protests and marches
  • Violence, which is how much violence can be afflicted onto the State
  • Cultural power, how has the dominant culture

This list is no means exhaustive. Each form of power has a time and place for it.

This is just the classic “four boxes of liberty”, rephrased.

To be fair, we're perhaps at the most viable moment for nonviolent "passive" revolutions. Our economical system is giant and needs constant growth not to crash, while having a too high inertia to adapt. We only need to make a general strike or a general stop on overconsumption (everyone only buying the very essential, like food and medication) to create enough chaos to take down the ones with power.

Don't believe me? Just look at how desperate corporations and governments get when some sector shrinks a few percent points, or when people reduce consumption of something. Also look at the obsession of monitoring and understanding our consumption habits, especially from younger people, in order to prepare in advance and never go down a single bit.

  • What do the last 20 years tell you?
  • There is so much surveillance and military power, how does it turn out?
  • What are the Black Panthers up to now?

You don't need violence to achieve meaningful resistance.

Literally just flash mob to the capitol and stop them from doing anything. They will most definitely use violence to stop us but we literally outnumber them.
