Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

I spent most of yesterday correcting someone's AI transcribed copy of our surplus sheet because it was so wrong

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"If AI was banned right now, would you be able to go on without it?"

Yes. I do this everyday.

I guess nobody did any work a few years back when AI wasn't being shoved down our throats. Also imagine being a carpenter or an electrician and being asked if you can get through your entire workday without AI. That guy is such an idiot is makes my head hurt.

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 97 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Seriously - the AI bubble is very recent. Pretending like no one can possibly remember how they functioned before AI was being used everywhere is asinine.

[–] frisbird@lemmy.ml 82 points 3 days ago

He's telling on himself. He doesn't actually know how to do anything and he never did. He's terrified of losing a.i. because there's nothing for him to go back to

Your second point was where my mind immediately went. I have never used AI at work and have no way to use AI at work even if I wanted to, because I don’t use a computer for work. Even if I was a massive AI supporter, I’d still see exactly zero difference at work.

This message doesn't really land well at all in the way this comic is made. Another post does a much better job of undermining the comment by comparing to a meth addict.

[–] AmbitiousProcess@piefed.social 140 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I don't think I've ever seen a more horrifying example of projection in my life πŸ’€

He can't go through his day without AI because he's made himself dependent on it instead of doing anything for himself, and he genuinely thinks that everyone else is the same way.

[–] davetortoise@reddthat.com 36 points 3 days ago (12 children)

People have surrendered their critical thinking skills. Truth is, AI disappearing overnight really would be disastrous, because a huge portion of humanity is utterly addicted to it and incompetent without it.

[–] Aetherial@nord.pub 0 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Uh, parse that out. Incompetent morons have always existed. How would it be disastrous to cut them off AI cold turkey?

[–] davetortoise@reddthat.com 1 points 12 hours ago

Very large sections of the workforce are no longer adequately trained in their field. This was not the case before AI. They need to be weaned off gradually while providing proper training, like a recovering addict.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 54 points 3 days ago (4 children)

I'm perfectly okay with that outcome.

I don't usually support "cull the weak" kinda mentalities... but cull the weak! Take away their AI and let the unemployed people who refuse to use AI take their jobs. I wanna see all these AI supporters go to the bottom of the barrel where they belong.

You know, if we can't have UBI or a gift economy.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 21 points 3 days ago

They're incompetent with it too.

[–] gh0stcassette@lemmy.blahaj.zone 23 points 3 days ago (11 children)

I am completely okay with everyone dumb enough to outsource their critical thinking to AI having their lifestyle upended when the AI bubble pops

Is that a trick question? Only imposters and truly inept people cannot live without AI support. The rest of us use their knowledge and experience to do our work, like we did in the years before this "Gift for the terminally inept" came about.

[–] bountygiver@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

This is responding to a different post about how an AI bro acting smug of like "You hate AI so much? Try going through a day without Claude"

Found the post this comic is making fun of: https://lemmy.world/post/50401646

LLMs are explosively imprecise, statistically luke-warm, grey goo extrusion spinsters, which is why all the logos for β€˜AI’ companies are variations of arseholes.

[–] SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 95 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I work as a software engineer and I don't use any of those things.... so yea... if I can do it, most people, the overwhelming majority of people can do it.

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 34 points 3 days ago (4 children)

I’m forced to for work but I could happily go back if it all disappeared.

In fact I wish it would.

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 29 points 3 days ago (2 children)

But if it disappeared, how will all those middle managements write all those hundreds of TPS reports that nobody reads?

I envy you. The company i work at fully embraced ai ...

My boss said it out loud yesterday: you know guys, i don't really depend on you anymore.

He must have wet dreams about developing software for a customer, without having to pay some stupid developers for it.

[–] Maxxie@piefed.blahaj.zone 27 points 3 days ago

My boss said it out loud yesterday: you know guys, i don't really depend on you anymore.

As a poor soul who's trying to refactor a fully vibe-coded project (in prod BTW) into something half-decent: hahahahahahahah πŸ«ͺ

[–] NekoKoneko@lemmy.world 24 points 3 days ago

Sounds like he and AI deserve each other, and he should probably just start a new company with just him and AI to do all the work without those inefficient employees. In fact, he should ask AI if it's a good idea. If there's anything he's unsure about, AI could reassure him to go for it.

this dude is literally this meme:

Been getting along just fine without thank you very much.

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 43 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

To this guy who very likely will never see this comment:

I get through my day without using an LLM quite nicely. In fact, I don't use ChatGPT or any other form of generative garbage at all. Ever.

Another senior software dev here with nearly 20 years experience. I have never needed or used these tools. Cuz fuckem, that's why.

[–] HereIAm@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Reviewing large AI PRs is the worst. I think being verbose is a good thing through function and variable naming, and comments for head scratching bits of cose, but AI can take it to an extreme degree with comments everywhere. Reading and critequing/discussing code and patterns used to be one of my favorite parts of the job.

My coworker who's fully in bed with AI barely understood the code he wrote before, but asking him a question now is just an indirect means of using Claude. It has gotten to the point where I'm writing my PR comments more in the style of a prompt because it's obvious he just pastes them in to Claude anyway.

I use Claude Code daily at work and yes, I am VERY willing to give it up if this LLM and generative bubble completely blew up tomorrow. I'd be more than happy to see it disappear.

I love shit like this.

Like. I work for a landscaping company. There is zero application of AI/LLMs/whatever to any aspect of my work. None of that shit is going to help me move piles of dirt, or plant saplings.

[–] reka@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It does feel fixating on this guys stupid comment is typical "find the stupidest person who holds a view you disagree with an pile on them and parade it as supposedly representative". In discourse isn't the strongest move to discredit the best arguments you disagree with rather than the worst?

Though he is a dick so who cares.

Don’t threaten me with a good time.

Get through a work day without it? Yes. BECAUSE THEN I'D ACTUALLY HAVE A FUCKING JOB.

...sorry for screaming.

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 20 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Have literally caught AI getting Holocaust facts wrong on repeated occasions. Anyone taking it seriously is full of misinformation at this point.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Can't believe they made talking to your computer like they do in Tron lame as fuck in real life

This is partly what's been said in this thread (from my skimming of the top 10 comments) but also because a lot of people are so fucking dumb that AI has been like Neo in the Matrix for them. They are so dumb that using basic words to search and filtering through the results seems like black magic. Now they feel empowered and smart. It's extremely fucking scary.

I only read the top 10 comments because I have taken my sleep medication and it's starting to win the fight ATM. Just needed to get this out before it was too late.

Oh no, to go back to the prehistoric time of 2021...

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 11 points 2 days ago

As someone who has made the occasional funny picture with the bingalator, how do you get to the point that you can not exist a day without some gen ai? Like how?

I don't use any of it now, so......it'd be pretty easy, actually.

[–] AmyAye@nord.pub 13 points 3 days ago

I don't even use any of that for work now so...
