Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

BirgirPall - a pair of Icelandic guys who would play games together, and their "We Broke..." series was an utter delight. I'm an old bastard who dislikes pretty much the entire genre of "watch someone else play a video game and yammer over it" entertainment, but BirgirPall were a major exception due to their talent for finding weirdass bugs and glitches, cracking up infectiously at the results, and editing them down into excellent little short videos. The guys behind the channel seem to have left it behind these days, and their individual channels just aren't the same.
I'm also a longtime fan of YouTube Poop, and stay subscribed to a lot of the early poopers from the old days. Every now and then one of them will come back and post something cool.
Coding-with-Yalco, bro showed up, dropped some best-in-class software concepts tutorials, then disappeared. I think he's still active on another channel in Korean language tho.
Does Veritasium count? It's not exactly dead, but its a zombie.
I miss Brian David Gilbert hosting polygon, his absurd videos like cooking every recipe in Zelda were great. AnyAustin has kind of stepped in to fill the void (and then some!), but BDG was doing great stuff. He's still around with his own channel which can be very funny but it's not quite the game related stuff I miss.
I really miss Jack Stauber.
Patchlunch. He made a live loop in ableton with beat segments from flying lotus (I think) that was just flawlessly executed. I rewatch it every so often and hope he continued to hone his craft.
I'm surprised no one mentioned Comicstorian. He would do long form reads of comic books and he would like to act out quotes. Right when he was becoming huge on youtube he randomly crashed into a tree and died. 🤷♂️ life is Strange.
Kruggsmash. He's mostly (maybe entirely?) A Dwarf Fortress creator. I first found him just looking for basic tutorials of how to play the game, but soon started watching his series where he uses the game as a platform for storytelling. He takes the procedurally generated stuff and fleshes it out. He voiced characters and made incredibly charming drawings for important scenes.
Camelworks. Rest in peace- the channel is dead because he passed away earlier this year. Mostly did content dicing into Elder Scrolls games, occasionally Fallout and other games.
Is It a Good Idea to Microwave This? - classic old school YouTube, from the days when it waa just high school and college students fucking around. Just 3 dudes with a camera, an extra microwave, and someone's parents cool enough to let them do dumb stuff. They eventually stopped as life caused the 3 of them to grow apart.
Technoblade and Mitten Squad are the 2 I keep. I miss TB's humor and MS's Fallout & Skyrim challenge videos.
VeganBlackMetalChef: vegan cooking with a twist you might not guess…OK it's in the name you guessed it
RubberNinja. I miss Ross' offbeat sense of humor and his collabs with EgoRaptor.
Been 6 years since the last upload, so it seems well and truly dead.
Another one is HelloImAPizza, who became known for his compilation of PSAs across the world, and for his high-quality presentation of the matter. Been a year since he uploaded and tends to go several years without new content, so mayne he'll come back some day. Dunno.
Alfie Aesthetics.
Not technically dead, but I'd love more uploads.
Kruggsmash for sure. I'm not sure if his channel is officially dead, but uploads got further and further apart and it's been months since I've seen any new Dwarf Fortress content. It's an extra shame because the quality of his content was only getting better imho. I've rewatched my favorites lots of times but I really miss the excitement of his monthly videos.
Epic Rap Battles of History isn’t exactly dead but they don’t post content nearly as much has they used to. And there are some bona-fide classics on there worth watching again and again.
totalbisquit, though more out of respect than rewatching
I recently re-watched a few episodes of Lord of the Arena and Shoutcraft. Good stuff :'^(
Twin Perfect. I love their Silent Hill content. I was hoping on a review of the Silent Hill 2 remake, but nothing so far.
Mitten Squad. Guy popularized challenge runs with his fallout and elder scrolls playthroughs, and his deadpan delivery gets me every time. Unfortunately passed away after a long battle with alcoholism. I miss that dude. I don't think he realized how much light he brought the world.
I fully agree, I was devastated when I learned what happened, he used to be my go-to for when I needed a good laugh after a hard day. I'll still go back and watch his videos, I just wish he could have gotten the help he needed
Hbomberguy
New video is about to drop real soon. 4.5 hour version is already on patron. Final version will probably be even a bit longer
Not a dead channel though. 4 hour videos just take a lot of time to produce. The same goes for ContraPoints, Münecat, and Noah Caldwell-Gervais
I don't know who those other people are, but I was just joking about the fact it's years between videos.
PhotonicInduction
I aint ‘avin it.
Man what an incredible trip that channel was.
Back in the day there was a whole slew of crackpots (in the best way). There was another who took the washing machine crown from PhotonicInduction, went by the name Aussie50. Used to love his content but he very sadly passed away quite some time ago (I won’t go into details out of respect).
These days the crazy backyard scientist vibe on YouTube has nearly dried up. So glad we still have StyroPyro.
I want to go back.
We still have NileRed I suppose, he does some outrageous shit on his NileBlue channel sometimes. BackyardScientist hasn't uploaded in ages either.
Allen Pan still puts out something amusing once in a while.
I miss the days of 3 minutes of insanity. Now every video is 25 minutes, and it’s all personality driven. It’s turned into regular TV.
We need a classic YouTube type site back again where people share shit for the fun of sharing. Monetization killed the platform.
I miss photonic
We have Styropyro now, but even his imagination isnt quite as unhinged as Photonic Induction
I don’t know, I think the destructive potential makes up for any lack of imagination. StyroPyro is hands down my favorite YouTuber.
Jenna Marbles, it's been like 6 years since she stopped. Her videos are lots of fun though.
