As demand for Meta AI glasses explodes

Is it though?

[–] Blibly@lemmy.world 64 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The people demand meta glasses! And AI! And pedophiles! And transphobia! And dying of easily preventable diseases! And the people want to shit their pants until they die!

The people want these things we promise!

[–] Arrandee@lemmy.world 24 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Thank you for your attention to this matter

Exactly one year ago, EssilorLuxottica told its investors that the Ray-Ban Meta glasses had sold 2 million units so far, a period spanning from the launch in October 2023 until February 2025.

Now, during its Q4 2025 earnings report, the company announced that it sold 7 million units of Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses in 2025 alone – meaning more than triple that of 2024. This suggests that around 9 million have been sold to date since the launch of Ray-Ban Meta two and a half years ago.

"Explodes" might be a bit of hyperbole, but sales have been increasing, and are projected to continue. This doesn't mean it will happen of course, and the numbers are in dollars, not in units sold, so inflation is at play here.

For a while I thought something like a life recording would be awesome ... Using your own cameras and devices at home and away and leveraging public devices to mesh together a record of everything really. Think of the possibilities, you have an argument and insist you did or did not say something...look it up! If you are accused of something like robbing a bank - no problem, my feed and gps and video evidence says otherwise. And when you are an old coot you can go back and watch the sex you had with whomever whenever isn't a negative . Then I realized the storage needs and someone would monetize it so only the wealthy could get a full backup and you got tier 32 ( birthdays and blowjobs maybe ) ... Now years later I realize without our permission they are doing exactly that, only fuck it all because we can build more storage and the intent has changed. It's not to sell you a service. In fact it is much worse.

Wasn't there a Black Mirror episode exactly like this? Episode 3 "The Entire History of You"

[–] 01189998819991197253@infosec.pub 3 points 2 months ago

Or the 2004 scifi thriller Final Cut. Great movie.

[–] BeatTakeshi@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Is storage really your main concern bro? You should watch Black mirror Season 1, Episode 3.

[–] mriormro@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago

This world you’ve concocted sounds truly horrifying.

[–] bonesawmcl@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

That chart is not about "AI smart glasses" (the ones with cameras and such), but about actual glass that has some "smart" functionality inside. Such as dimming or going opaque on command. So kinda relevant to this discussion.

Press [X] to doubt.

[–] HertzDentalBar@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 months ago

It's like when a republicans book makes it to a top sellers list, it's really just them buying thousands of copies to make it look like it's going well.

This feels like marketing disguised as criticism.

[–] kylie_kraft@lemmy.world 54 points 2 months ago (2 children)

It is starting to feel like Meta is actively catering to the contrarian douche market, like the idiots who bought Cybertrucks. This also increases the likelihood of creep shots because there is bound to be a lot of overlap there.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

They're supplying a demand for profit. Without strong laws to stop them, they'll keep doing it. Such is capitalism.

I think one of the best ways to fight them is to continue to stigmatize the pervert glasses. Call out and socially isolate anyone in your circle who wears them, or even mentions being curious about them, all excuses aside.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

its already being used by creeps. doctors/dentist are doing it while with a patient.

[–] borkborkbork@piefed.social 2 points 2 months ago

they need to be reported to their boards and lose their licenses, that shit is insane.

[–] Flower@sh.itjust.works 29 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Tell police and ICE these glasses will automatically identify them and report their position, then stand back?

[–] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

ICE is actually a damned good argument in favour of these glasses

I suppose we should never underestimate young males' propensity to perv on women and girls. Nor should we underestimate the tech bros' willingness to provide the hardware to do it.

Remember, billionaires have zero empathy, especially for we poors, and really not even for their own kids. They'll stop for two reasons only, if the pervert glasses stop selling, and/or they're forced to by laws with real teeth. Small "cost of doing business" fines won't do it, we all know.

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago

Young males? We have ample proofs that the pervs men subset covers the whole range of ages from teens to old creeps.

[–] felykiosa@sh.itjust.works 26 points 2 months ago

Hope europe ban them

[–] crazycraw@crazypeople.online 18 points 2 months ago (1 children)

idea: qr code face mask that sends them a logoff of their meta account. maybe add a banner that says fuck off or something fun.

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago

I wish it could send a full delete command to their account.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Meta is not the only smart glasses maker, but its AI glasses are by far the most popular.

The tech giant invested heavily in promoting them, collaborating with celebrity influencer Kylie Jenner on a pair of Ray-Bans featuring an AI assistant that speaks in her voice. The campaign featured billboard ads and a video spot showing Kylie simply enjoying wearing the glasses, without necessarily highlighting their practical features.

Consumers are so freaking gullible, in aggregate…

It amazes me.

I honestly do not see the appeal of this kind of advertising; it makes me actively not want to buy the thing for a plethora of reasons. Why should I care what X celebrity does? How much of that ad is in the product’s cost? Why should I buy without researching thoroughly? Why would I believe the ad, given how many ads lie or fudge? And that’s setting aside everything I know about Meta.

I’m starting to think it’s a neurodivergence or antisocial thing. As apparently I’m a tiny minority, and this sort of marketing works like magic, on millions of people.

[–] GolfFoxtrotLima@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, this unfortunately. You and me both, I don’t like the ai pervert glasses

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Well, even if it wasnt perv glasses: why would I buy something because Kylie Jenner hawks it in a commercial?

Or... I dunno. Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman?

Who cares?

I don't care if its the Dalai Lama and actually Jesus selling chocolate; I don't trust some commercial, as the incentive is peverse. I don't get why people are so swayed by them. I suppose it buys awareness that something exists... but thats it.

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

There is an old saying "Never hit someone wearing glasses".

But these days, "If someone is wearing Meta glasses, punch them directly between the eyes"

[–] dektep@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

these fucking things will be the size of contact lens eventually

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

not even that unthinkable, at least for basic machine vision (4k recording are probably not going to work). Powered by induction and using low power electronics might be able to get there; although if you arent fine with implanting induction coils in your cheekbones or under your eyebrows with attached energy storage implanted it might be a bit invasive. At that point it would be preferable to develop Cybereyes - a biointerface connecting your eye nerves using a biochip paired with a camera; the space that's left in the eyesocket is probably big enough for enough energy storage for a day. Don't forget to charge overnight tho, you might go temporarily blind.

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 2 points 2 months ago

nice, spicy pillow in my eye socket.

[–] PetteriPano@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I don't even want pervert glasses. I barely even take pictures with my phone.

What I really want is that projection from those O.G. Google glass that projected image straight in your eye. Then I could watch porn all day every day everywhere.

[–] Captain_Buddha@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Your second description is STILL less perverted than meta glasses.

I keep wondering who is the idiot that would by junk like this...

[–] wedge@multiverse.soulism.net 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Odd choice of words for “zero demand”

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

I think you grossly underestimate the number of perverts out there, and severe their cases are.

[–] Trilogy3452@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Or naive people buying because "cool tech"

Thankfully, I don’t know anyone who would want these things

[–] borkborkbork@piefed.social 2 points 2 months ago

it's not the people I know I worry about, it's the creeps.

[–] nuko147@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

9 million people (7 million sold just in 2025) are spying and recording others...

And they expect even more next year... Meta is going for 20 million production for 2026... Maybe 30 million if trends keep..
