I'm still playing Rimworld

Regardless, I never spend more than $20 on a game, wait for the "Game of the Year Platinum Super Edition" to go on sale. It works every time!

[–] pentastarm@piefed.ca 21 points 2 months ago

Same. Got the base Cyberpunk 2077 game for $18. And then got the dlc for $18. Best $36 I've spent on a game in a long time.

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 6 points 2 months ago

Isn't each rimworld DLC more than 20USD? Though I play it enough to easily be worth it.

All hail the ability to emulate console games up to a certain generation well enough on even lower end hardware.

Ain't no other way to officially enjoy classics like Tony Hawk Pro Skater ( best on Dreamcast IMO ). Probably one of the greatest skater games, just behind a game like Skate 2. But maybe that's the nostalgia talking...

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago (2 children)

What about playing them on the original consoles? I've got a Game Cube and PS3 I still use occasionally, and a PS2 that I haven't tried in a long time but would give it 50/50 for just booting up if I hooked it up, plus some portion of the failure 50% includes the possibility of repairing it.

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 months ago (5 children)

Original console, in most cases, is probably gonna be the better option IMO. But due to the rising cost of everything, games/consoles included, emulation is better from a purely price saving standpoint. I am lucky enough to have so many consoles, but I still emulate or use console softmods because I can't afford every game I want.

Indie devs are fucking killing it, though. A lot of bangers have been coming out.

I’m currently obsessed with How Many Dudes? That game is so much fun.

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 28 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Right now is the best time to play old games. Retro gaming handhelds have never been better, and honestly there's little to improve in them at this point.

Get yourself a retro handheld for as little as $100, that will feel more premium than a Steam Deck, and start playing games that came out before you were born.

I've genuinely forgotten how bad the current video game industry is, because I'm so busy having a blast with older/retro titles.

Highly recommend to all gamers.

You can check out what handheld console would fit you best here: https://retrocatalog.com/

Skyrim, Fallout NV, Diablo II, modded to fuck Dungeon Keeper, Age Of Empires II, so many more. I’m set for life

[–] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz 48 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Modded to What?

Sounds dope, though. Enjoy your peace, king

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 months ago (4 children)

I know nothing of the Diablo 2 modding scene but there better be a sex mod.

Dwarf Fortress is 20 years old and still only has half the planned features. Tarn will be working on it until he croaks. Bless that man.

[–] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (3 children)

It's kind of blown my mind to learn about the development of that game. UnReal World's similar how it started development in like the 90's and the guys still just keep working on it like a group hobby. Love that for them

I mean Warcraft II is still the shit. As is classic doom, carmageddon, Aoe,... you name it.

[–] Waffelmeister@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

I still play Warcraft III - Frozzen Throne. So many custom maps. I've got enough gaming content for another 10 years.

Retro game prices have been skyrocketing too. Everything's kinda fucked.

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 2 months ago

Just soft mod your console or get a flash cart and sail the high seas.

[–] Blurntout@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 months ago (7 children)

Any old mmo enjoyers with a game with an active community to link a fella? Was a fiend for RF online back in the day it was sci-fantasy before I knew what sci fantasy was haha!

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Clan Lord

I played it during the beta way back in ‘97(?) but couldn’t continue when it went to a monthly subscription due to being a teen. I found out it was still going 3 years ago and became re-addicted.

Now a character is $15USD and no money is asked for after that. No micro-transactions or nuthin’.

The graphics maintain the ‘97 2D top-down style with chat bubbles, but the game still gets monthly updates.

You can log in for free but no progress will be saved and you don’t get to choose your name or anything cool.

The community is super friendly and helpful and some players have been playing since the start. It’s deceptively deep and there’s wikis to help you figure out what’s going on, but I don’t want to overload you with links right now.

There’s a discord too, but I’d rather you ask for it in-game to avoid and non-clanners causing trouble

Morrowind, Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim, Saints Row 2, GTA San Andreas, Ultima, beside few indies, Pragmata and Fallout London, this and retro console games are my main playthroughs

[–] ltxrtquq@lemmy.ml 15 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Fallout New Vegas

You had me worried. Surely Fallout New Vegas isn't a 20 year old game? But no, it only came out 16 years ago. Crisis averted.

[–] NOPper@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Good news! Bethesda is surely about to release a patch that fixes nothing you need and breaks all your mods, just like Skyrim the other day again!

yet another shout out for Space Station 14, a fully open source almost-massively multiplayer game with tons of forks being actively developed with lots of cross pollination of ideas and mechanics between them.

outrageously fun gameplay, totally free, easily modified, decently easy to set up ones own server

also totally cross platform between linux, mac, and windows

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 months ago

Still got Dosbox and a bunch of classics like Wing Commander, The Incredible Machine and Space/King's Quest.

[–] Avicenna@programming.dev 11 points 2 months ago

Cyberpunk 2077 is 6 years old. May pirate and try out before realizing my pc can't run it.

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 9 points 2 months ago

You could, or gog have a much better refund policy than steam. You could even refund it and keep the offline installer if you really wanted to, of course you won't get updates and it isn't really the idea of it. I think they do block you eventually if you keep abusing it for everything.

[–] otacon239@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

UT2004 still bops. If I suddenly stopped being able to buy new games, that one would keep me entertained for at least another decade.

Everyone about that GTAVI life while I'm in the Fire Emblem and Yakuza mines trying to make a dent in the 50 million games each of those series have, because every time I finish one they release three more 🫩

Japan...please...stop...I beg you. I feel as overworked as the devs working for you.

Even if it's just 10-15, Zomboid, Oxygen Not Included, Factorio, Isaac, and Risk of Rain, are thousands of possible fun hours, even without rotation

Not quite, rimworld and factorio are only around 13 years old.

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago
