so we sleep in cycles, usually a one full sleep cycle is about 90min. it starts with light sleep, and goes into deep sleep, then back to light sleep, repeat. deeper sleep begins around ~30min in.

if you wake up from light sleep you'll feel more refreshed

if you wake up in the middle of deep sleep, you'll need to do all that body booting up when already awake, and it certainly doesn't feel refreshing

(that's why a 15min nap can breathe new life into you, but a 40min nap will leave you more tired)

it's best to aim your sleeping schedule to include sleep in the increments of around 90min, proper night of sleep should have you go through 4-6 cycles (6h, 7,5h, or 9h).

the 90min is just an average though, listen to your body and see how things work for you. for me personally, around 7h or 7,5h works perfectly

Sleep debt is real. Take notes about how you feel. Get a good nights sleep for a week, and take notes again. You'll see a difference. Self care isn't like filling a gas tank or taking out the trash, you have to maintain consistency to see the benefits, and once you do, you will.

[–] WraithGear@lemmy.world 5 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

i counter that with a, ‘What do you mean get a good nights sleep for a week?

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)
[–] WraithGear@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

i don’t understand? like you mean, pound 1.5 5 hour energies every other night? or like, take a bunch of naps during lunch or break times? or getting an idea in your head so powerful that you must go three days working on it unit you colapse on the surprisingly soft carpet at yhe front door and watering up 6 hours later?

[–] BartyDeCanter@piefed.social 11 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I’m on stimulants that require not just a prescription, but approval from the manufacturer, quarterly check ins and ekgs. It’s now two in the afternoon and I’m hoping I can make it until three before I have to take my second nap. I’ve been at a friends house for a mid-morning coffee, and after the second cup taken a nap in their guest room. I know exactly what I can and can’t do at finely defined levels of sleepiness. I know what it feels like when part of my brain is asleep but I’m still waking around because I have to feed the pets before I go to bed. I’ve woken up from a nap, drank a monster, had a one hour job interview and then gone back to sleep right after. I experience levels of tiredness every day that you can’t imagine and there are no words for.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 9 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

What's wrong with you?

If you took a sleeping pill would you be out for 3 days like Jesus?

[–] BartyDeCanter@piefed.social 7 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

I have type 2 narcolepsy and every genetic marker for high stimulant tolerance.

I’m hoping to get on the oxybates to see if they help, but my next sleep test isn’t until December. I’m wanting to try a few other meds, but they are both highly addictive and can mess up the test. My current plan is that if can’t get the oxybates after my test, to try some of the other, somewhat sketchier, stimulants and alternate them as I pick up a tolerance. I might have to either find a street dealer or go to Mexico for them though.

I’m trying to avoid opioids as a substitute for oxybates, but I have to admit that trying codine to see if it helps is getting very tempting.

Looks like I made it almost five minutes past three, so now it’s nap time.

I'm disabled and unshackled by society's notions of time. So I go to sleep when I'm tired and wake up when I'm done. I often sleep for 10-12 hours.

[–] affenlehrer@feddit.org 13 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Sounds nice. Enjoy your sleep

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 7 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

“Sounds nice” is such a weird thing to say when someone says they’re disabled

[–] affenlehrer@feddit.org 5 points 12 hours ago

I obviously meant the sleep, not the disability

[–] WizardArtsPropaganda@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Sleep is a scam. I feel the same when i sleep 10 hours and 5 hours.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 6 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

You need consistent 8, not sporadic 10s and 12s.

When I do a 12hr sleep, I feel like my brain atrophied in my sleep, wake up and stay foggy all day.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

one 3 hour block, one 6 hour block, if I'm lucky they're together if I'm not I have to dedicate 12 hours to sleep. really depends on how much i wake up on the midnight shit. if i can stay asleep (and I have managed to stay asleep for well over a year and keep my (early telecommuting) job and shit. that was an interesting nap to wake up from) and i can, it really just depends how much garlic i et

[–] Grostleton@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Something something sleep debt.

At this point I figure I'm so far in the hole I just don't worry about it much anymore. Plenty of time to catch up once I'm dead.

[–] Eq0@literature.cafe 11 points 1 day ago

Yeah, it takes a bit to “pay back” the owed debt, but it’s a matter of a couple if weeks at most. Sleeping well and long for two-three days in a row should already have positive effects. While sleeping long only once might make you feel even more tired - or at least that’s how I feel.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago

dude how do you know you aren't already and catching up now

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 14 points 1 day ago

You need to get a sleep study.

Same. Sometimes I feel better with less hours myself.

[–] rounding_error@lemmy.today 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You might have sleep apnea.

[–] crunchy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I thought I had sleep apnea for sure, so I went in and I had a couple sleep studies done. Negative for sleep apnea and other sleep disorders, so they ordered an arterial blood gas. All my levels came back perfect, so they referred me to an ENT because they did catch a lot of snoring. Five minutes with the ENT and they saw I have a badly deviated septum that pretty much keeps me from breathing through my right nostril. So now I'm on a trial of breathing strips at night to see if surgery will be a good option.

[–] rounding_error@lemmy.today 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

I had a badly deviated septum too. I highly recommend the septoplasy surgery. The strips just DO NOT work 😭. My nose hurt like hell and bled for two weeks (during covid too), but it’s worth it. I would also look into getting proper pillow support, if yours is not tall enough. I add some towels underneath my head to correct my neck’s shape.

[–] crunchy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 hours ago

The nasal strips have been a slight improvement, but I'd still much rather have the surgery. Finding proper pillows seems impossible though! One is never enough, and two is awkward and uncomfortable. Right now I'm using some pillows we originally got for the couch and those have been fine.

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago

Yep! It’s one of the surgeries that seem to just work. I had mine done at 14 and it’s been fantastic. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone ever say it wasn’t worth it. I love when medicine just works

I’ve had over a dozen sinus surgeries cause I have cystic fibrosis and I’m pediatric size so all the passages needed to be widened but the deviated septum was a HUGE improvement the only other one that came close was when they opened the back passage connecting my nose to my mouth

Getting a CPAP has changed my wife’s life for the better. That and metformin

[–] wet_bones@lemmy.4d2.org 11 points 1 day ago

Yep. If you feel like this no matter how many hours of sleep you're getting, you should have a sleep study done. Apnea can kill you, no shit.

I think he meant playing CBAT changed her life. I had a similar experience.

[–] Gerblat@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

CBAT is great for two things: sleepin and fuckin

[–] teslekova@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 day ago

Mask you wear that inflates you slightly like a balloon when you sleep so you don't suffer from periods of not breathing during the night.

Sleep apnoea is the name of the condition it treats.

It is quite nice to treat it. It may reduce the amount of days you wake up and feel like you never slept.

Sleep apnoea also increases risk of heart attack and stroke.

[–] VibeSurgeon@piefed.social 5 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine.

It's a medical device used to prevent sleep apnea, a condition where your breathing stops during sleep, which causes the lack of oxygen (or CO2 build-up? I can't remember which) to trigger you to wake up, disrupting your sleep. This leads to sleep deprivation, even when you may have thought that you managed to get a full night's sleep.

The machine treats the condition by continuously pushing down air down your airways, which makes the breathing interruptions impossible, leading to less sleep interruptions.

Over time, the condition may lead to complications that are more serious than mere sleep deprivation, such as heart disease.

One of the symptoms people near you may notice is snoring. Another is constantly being tired, sometimes to the point of for example falling asleep while driving.

It's a condition that should be treated quite seriously. If the symptoms line up particularly well for you, then a sleep study might be a good idea.

The treatment isn't exactly fun, but I can tell you from personal experience that it will change your life. Being treated actually gave me the energy to take care of the problem of overweight that I had, which was the root cause behind the sleep apnea. I have been symptom-free for many years now.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

which makes the breathing interruptions impossible, leading to less sleep interruptions.

which makes that specific type of breathing interruption impossible. we had a bipap for dad for a different problem

[–] VibeSurgeon@piefed.social 1 points 11 hours ago

You're right, my comment was an oversimplification.

[–] Wolf314159@startrek.website 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I wish I could stay asleep for 8 consecutive hours, or even go back to sleep after waking up at hour 6 without feeling like shit the rest of the day. Some of my most restorative sleeping has been 4 hours or a 30 minute nap. Sleeping more than 30 minutes and less than 4? Straight to sleepy jail. More than 4 hours, but a little less than six? Sleepy jail. More than 8 hours? Probably dead, definitely at least sleepy jail where nothing productive happens.

[–] dingus@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I started taking a psych med some time ago that evidently is sometimes used as a sleep aid in people. I sleep like the fucking dead now lol.

[–] DelnitaCrane@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

Seroquel did that for me, best sleep I've had in my life lol

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 3 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

You feel like this because you subsist on caffeine.

You're addicted and you experience withdrawal symptoms whenever you wake up because at that point you haven't had your drug in several hours.

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 9 points 22 hours ago

Maybe, that’s one possibility. I was like this because I never entered deep wave sleep because of PTSD, normal stress can do that too, not all sleep is equal it doesn’t require you to be doing anything wrong to get bad sleep

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Hold the phone. Is this the revelation that could solve all my sleep problems? Do you have a source perchance?

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 1 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

My only source is real-life observation, though I'm sure some time researching online would be illuminating.

But, yeah. It's worth a try. Try going completely without caffeine for at least a month, see if your sleep improves. Fair warning, though: it won't be easy. Caffeine withdrawals are not fun. Lots of feelings of lethargy and headaches along the way. But after the first week or so, that goes away, and then you can live happily without caffeine dependency. You can expect to feel like shit for the first week or so -- but that's normal, just part of the drug withdrawals, and you need to be off it for a while after that to truly experience what being caffeine-free feels like.

Personally, I gave up caffeine entirely* years and years ago, and I've felt much better since.

*Not absolutely caffeine free in all circumstances, though. If I absolutely need to stay awake -- such as when driving late at night -- I will occasionally drink one caffeinated drink to achieve that. But for me, that only happens once every few years or so. As long as it's only one occasional drink, the addiction doesn't really have time to take hold and it won't cause long-term problems.

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 3 points 19 hours ago

You tell me. I think I've had at least one caffeinated drink a day for several months at least and tried going to a convention yesterday without having drank anything with caffeine until like 11pm - big mistake. I didn't have a headache, fortunately, but I was miserable the entire day. Got tired at like 4-5pm and just felt like sleeping for the rest of the day. It was so freaking draining.

The thing is, it doesn't feel like an addiction to me, but when I question the worthiness of drinking something without caffeine, oftentimes I think to myself "why bother if there's not even any caffeine in there?" which sounds a little alarming.

Your consumption sounds a lot more healthy in comparison. I should give this a try sometime, maybe do some more research too. Thank you for your insight 🌟
