Hey they did this article for millennials a few years ago!

[–] cardboardboxfort@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

Still "delaying" all those age critical milestones. Can we start "delaying" CEO profits and windfalls for a while?

[–] tmyakal@infosec.pub 15 points 1 day ago

It's the Seven Year Rule from wrestling: you can reuse plots and stories every seven years, because anyone who'd recognize it has aged out and doesn't watch wrestling anymore.

[–] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I don't like the general idea of needing to hit certain "milestones" by a certain point in order to be considered "successful". Live your life at your own pace.

[–] cardboardboxfort@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

Yeah but the real issue is its generally accepted that adults have a decade or 2 of real earning power during which they tend to buy homes and sometimes start families. Once a person ages out of that bracket it becomes real difficult to accomplish those things.

Also worth noting that employers will avoid hiring people over 45 years old because thats the age when health insurance companies feel a person becomes more of a risk than an asset to them.

[–] LavaPlanet@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

It's probably more trying to say some people want to (buy a house, have kids) but are forced into delaying because of outside environmental factors, (environment, capitalism).

Late stage capitalism indeed.

Spoiler: They aren't affordable. They're taking all the wealth and hoarding it.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 50 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Millennial here couldn’t buy a house until my 40s and someone had to die to make that possible. We need a revolution

[–] a4ng3l@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago

Yeah I was going to say… as a millennial it was a bumpy road so far… but I acknowledge that next gens will have it even harder :(

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

being conditioned to leave the house at 18 isnt a milestone(seems very heavily stereotyped in the us), as is expecting to be finding a job right after degree too isnt a really a milestone(its a very US thing apparently), see alot of these stories just from a search alone. also some millineals are like this too unable to leave home due to HCOL, especially if you wernt in Tech/ or high paying health field.

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 4 points 1 day ago

even if you were/are in Tech you'd be lucky to A. still have a job at this point and B. be paid well for it. I've been in the industry for 20+ years now and the wages just totally stagnated. I went from having more money than I knew what to do with in my 20s to having just enough to ALMOST live comfortably on my own. And I'm kicking myself that I didn't settle down in my 20s, buy a house then, marry the girl I was seeing then, starting a family then. Like I said I had more money than I could imagine and figured "it's going to get better from here" and it didn't. I blew it. wasted it all on devices and pcs i don't have anymore, videogames, booze, drugs, clothes, etc. Just totally blew it.

I see fresh grads today who are damn lucky to even get a job in this field but they're being paid peanuts and living in a shoebox apartment or with like 5+ roommates or still living at home with their folks.

[–] Archimedes@sh.itjust.works 75 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You're all millennials now

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 21 points 2 days ago

And I remember the same framing like we were the first to do it, this shit’s been on the decline since at least Reagan.

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Obviously, we should outlaw abortion, replace jobs with AI, encourage people to have more kids, spend more on wars and scams, and destroy the planet.

Let's have more kids while we encorage the end times for our rapture!

[–] Hupf@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Maybe if we sent the AI to the wars

[–] trailee@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Oh don’t worry, they’re working on it!

while America was obsessively watching the latest bizarre twists in Trump’s Iran debacle, Whiskey Pete’s Pentagon rolled out a $1.5 trillion budget request that contained a line item almost nobody’s talking about: a 24,000 percent increase, from $225 million last year to $54.6 billion this year, for an outfit called the Defense Autonomous Warfare Group.

That’s the largest year-over-year jump for any program in the entire defense budget, and it’s earmarked to build out AI-driven autonomous human-killing systems inside the Special Operations Command headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida.

Once the Terminators are working well enough in the battlefield, they can easily be expanded to “help” with domestic law enforcement, immigration removal, and suppression of protest (which is now terrorism).

Unrestricted obedience is at the heart of the dispute between Anthropic and Hegseth earlier this year.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

Ah, so we are speed running the "Men of Iron" plotline from Warhammer 40k?

[–] Signtist@bookwyr.me 54 points 2 days ago

I love how they greens it like a personal failure when someone isn't able to hit the "life milestone" of being able to afford something that gets more expensive relative to median income every year. It's like expecting kids born today to speak by 4 months old just because some random out-of-touch person thought it would help the economy.

[–] mlatu@moist.catsweat.com 42 points 2 days ago

"being able to afford retirement eventually" and other fantasy tales as told by 20th century folk to a 21st century audience

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 41 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Same they they said about Millennials, but this is not a problem that the owner class wants to fix.

[–] derAbsender@piefed.social 9 points 2 days ago (19 children)

That's Part of the owner class solution.

Poor people ought not to multiply and have a good Life, since they are about to be exterminated, by wars and finally through climate Change.

The rich plan to genocide us.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

Finally...why are so many people afraid to outright say it? Why sugar coat it? ALL our suffering is engineered!

[–] applebusch@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

then why do they keep complaining we arent having enough babies and gutting anything even tangentially related to birth control? they arent planning to genocide us they just want more dependent and disposable slaves for the profit mills.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 6 points 2 days ago

on of my school at had a faculty said the state uni Enrollment crisis was "birth rates", no its the lack of jobs for many degrees, discouraging future students to go the schools, also the schools lack career development options.

[–] derAbsender@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Because birthing is a very dangerous act and endangers the mother mortally. If you wanted to genocide someone you'd start with the children and women, with a Lack of women the men will follow suit, because of lethal competition and the aforementioned wars.

The lack of birth control is exactly exacerbating that.

With a lack of birth control it is not the amount of workers that rise, bit the amount of dead women and children during the birth process.

We are beyond the profit Phase of capitalism, they fell into AI psychosis and think they dont need us anymor, since soon AI can replace our necessity.

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Birth rates fell significantly in the late 1800s, before modern birth control was an option.

[–] derAbsender@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

And one key factor was that kids became a financial liability.

That did not change in 200 years.

You would think if the owning class was interested in many workers that this problem wouldve been Adresse by now.

But birth rates continue to fall, while child mortally rises.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 14 points 2 days ago

Capitalists cannot exist without workers. They in fact need larger populations to expand valorization of capital, and to have a reserve army of labor by which they can threaten the employed workers with replacement.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago

i think genz arnt joining in large numbers for the military, but millineals and they get consequences of it more.

why do we need "experts" to tell us this, have these people not spoken to anyone in gen Z for even 5 minutes?

[–] Addition@sh.itjust.works 28 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Because people (especially 20th century people) have been trained to ignore the evidence of their eyes and ears and trust only the word of the party.

Maybe this is anecdotal, but all the 20th century people in my life completely disregard what anyone younger has to say, preferring to believe that we're all entitled, whiny, complaining kids instead of realizing that we're adults in our 30/40s with genuine economic grievances. But they will blindly believe absolutely anything if it comes from personally preferred news media, even if its complete nonsense.

[–] Prairie_Madness@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

God I thought this was just me. Any time I point out any issue some boomer tells me to quit whining. Bad enough to be treated like a kid let alone when I'm pushing 40. It's really getting annoying.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 7 points 2 days ago

when boomers themselves are expecting thier children to be thier retirement plan too.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

Cut them off, no exceptions. You cannot allow them to compromise you.
